  1. Thanks, ya'll. That was my next hope was the curing time. I had one hot apple pie scent that I couldn't get hardly any smell out of. Now at that time I was still using 464 and had good throw with several other scents, so I thought I had gotten my first bottle of "weak" oil. However the few that I made, I sat aside and a month or 2 later thought I try them again and they were much better!. But with this wax(435), I seem to be having this problem with lots of fo's. So is it possible that some waxes need a much longer cure time? I was going to try some more fo's from a reputable supplier such as KY and see if it was the quality of my oils...........there are so many people that have good luck with this wax, I know its gotta be that I'm not doing something right. I've been noticing that some say the area in which you live sometimes affects certain waxes.......I'm on a mountain...so I dunno. Anyways , I appreciate all the feedback.
  2. Ok, so they ARE 2 seperate places. I thought all this time when people were mentioning Ky, it was where I had ordered some fo's.(Bluegrass) And they were really strong! So does anyone else have a lot of experience with Bluegrass? I saw that alot of people recommend KY.
  3. Ummm, Don't roll your eyes, but I just got confused about who I ordered these fo's from.....(i'm newbie) Are Bluegrass and KY the same place?
  4. So tempering alone would not make this "glassy plastic" looking candle? So it must have had pariffin in it? I have to admit that the soy candles with a little paraffin in them look pretty good.(I wouldn't want one THAT glossy , but still) I wonder if it is worth it to stay with all soy? .......sigh........Is paraffin cheaper? This guy was selling his 8oz square mason...3/$12....I would find it hard to do that with an all soy candle. Sigh , did any of you have that place where you had tested and tested and you had to be honest and say your candle still wasn't as good as "the others". I took a break from the testing of my candles today, just cleaned them up, and lit 2 other candles. (I was hoping I had been having candle nose and was being to hard on myself....)One was this plastic candle (watermelon)good strong scent. The other was from the person who got me started in this (an all soy peaches and cream). Well when my husband came home from work, he smelled them and said , "NOW those are good!" He thought I had finally got a really good thing going:tongue2: ..I had to tell him they weren't mine.:undecided Okay I'm finished whining..................lol! Good night!
  5. I have been reading about tempering and don't understand why I would do this except for looks ,maybe?........but thought I would try it if it were possible for it to affect scent throw. Is that even possible? When it comes to scientific stuff I get lost! Some things I understand , but tempering and wick reasoning, I don't! I recently bought a candle that had good scent throw, but had a very shiny glassy look , so I asked the maker if it was parifin. He said it was soy. So I was thinking that maybe it had been tempered to give it this glassy look. I have never seen soy look that way. What do you think?
  6. I used the co for scent throw , but it did make a major difference in the smoothness and frosting. I poured cool ,100. With the 464 I poured 140, always smooth, can't remember about frosting. To me the 435 takes longer to cure. I wait 5 days before testing and some scents don't have much throw until 2 weeks! The 464 I could test in 24 to 48 hrs, but did have some scents that still needed 2 weeks. The co makes the wax harder, so if you add more than a tsp , you may have to wick up. The 464 is a very creamy wax....easy to wick.......if you had the opportunity to slowly gather scents that worked good in this wax .....then I would say use 464. 435 is SUPPOSE to have better scent throw with more fo's but I haven't proved that yet.......hoping to though... Here are 3 scents that were killer in the 464 for me.....(N. GA. mountains) Sweet Patchouli and Coconut Lime from Bluegrass and Blueberry Cobbler Special from Bittercreek North.Oh and Cinnamon from wicks, wax, scents. Scent that didn't work good in 464 was Hot Apple Pie (wicks, waxs , scents)and some trouble with spicy vanilla....I'm thinking the oils have a lot to do with it.............but the co sure helped with the 435.
  7. This thread is now old, but this is how long it took me to get good results! The breakthru was when Sharon suggested I try the coconut oil! It has helped alot! To be honest I can't say that this wax has better throw than the 464, but I have just now gotten several scents wicked, so maybe.........? Oh I forgot this good thing....you can use less fo in this wax for same scent throw....so that is very good! One thing is for sure........IMO this wax needs time to cure! So much better after that! Wick wise I would have to say I like the eco and cd wicks best but have not tried the cdn's . And I can't get vanilla to throw in this wax.....any advice? Also having trouble with cinnamon! Is there something these 2 scents have in common? Am I crazy or could it be a fact that a really good FO will throw in any wax, but cheaper oils will throw in a selective amount of waxes?
  8. I like Stella's reference to Emerald Mountains, since you said your color scheme included emerald. Patricia's Emeralds? Never mind , not smooth enough............
  9. I've never seen any candles where the label was a matchbook! That sounds really cool! I would love a candle with that! Where do you buy personalized matchbooks?
  10. Try a cd-14 or an eco 12. Or any other wick roughly in that size frame. Burn three times for 3 hours each. If no full melt pool after three burns, wick up a size, if melt pool is more than 1/2" wick down a size. Good luck........
  11. I'm dumb here, but what exactly are you making? Scents for burners............what is that?
  12. I have less frosting and smoother tops when I pour cooler. Never more then 125, and best at 100, but so hard to wait for it to cool off! However, when the candles get chilled from the overnight temps in my garage....................they frost anyway!!!!!
  13. All of bittercreeks scents haven't worked for me , but the blueberry cobbler has always been strong in any combo. But I agree.....is it even possible to get a "bad " scent from Kentucky's?
  14. I also use presto pot with spigot attached. Wooden paint sticks also work great for stirring without scratching. Here is one thing about the spigot being attatched..Con: doesn't get the bottom 1/2 inch of wax out. Pro: that naturally leaves trash on bottom of presto pot, easy to pour out.
  15. okay I tried this with my evil 435. (thanks Sharon for the tip...)Lo and behold it did seem to help with the hot throw.........I got totally smooth tops, no frosting and the colors looked better! And wow wasn't even concerned about that! I just wanted decent hot throw! I used 1/2 to 1 teaspoon pp. of golden brands 435 soy wax. ANd Sharon.....believe it or not I did finally get a scent to wick with a cd 14 in a 8oz jj. ! It was heavenly honeydew. Sigh , some of my strong scents are still not giving good hot throw with this wax, such as cinnamon, strawberry jam, etc. One thing that I can't get thru my head even after months of testing is this: WHAT IS IT ABOUT DIFFERENT WICKS THAT AFFECT SCENT THROW? Is it how hot they burn? THis drives me nuts! I am trying to use the cd wicks, but can't seem to get a hot throw with them on certain scents!!!! (with the 435 anyway)Am hoping the coconut oil will help on this ! So far the scent lovespell seems to be doing great with the coconut oil added. Burns clean and tops remelt smooth time after time, decent smell and yahoo........it's with a cd wick! (A cd-18 in a 16oz mason, I think) Someone answer me this: IF I use a scent that is known for good scent throw and I use the same amount with same wicks in same size jars, but one with 464 wax and the other with 435 wax ...and the 435 has weak hot throw ...........WHAT IS THIS SHOWING ME? I need a hotter wick?, I need, what? The eco wick seems to have better hot throw in this wax.......what does this prove? I am so dumb on this matter.........
  16. eco seems to have better scent throw with me also. I wonder why this is? But the cd wicks seem less likely to mushroom or have soot IMO. Can someone tell us why a wick can change scent throw? IS it the heat? Like a hotter burning wick is more likely to have better scent throw or a cooler burning? This is something I can't:tongue2: understand in my testing.
  17. Never been to this town that I know of. How far is it from Chattanooga , TN?
  18. ok, I am pulling my hair out! I poured the wax at a cooler temp.....100 degrees...then brought inside my house so it could stay at constant room temp for a few days.........viola! no more drowning wicks AND I got it wicked with the cd's................Then I notice...........I NO LONGER HAVE ANY SCENT THROW! Scent throw with eco wicks, none with cd wicks. What does this mean!? And is it because I poured colder? I was pouring at 125. AARRGGGHHH:tongue2: All I know to do is add the coconut oil.....does this wax take the full 2 weeks to cure before you can test it? I have been waiting 2 to 5 days before testing.
  19. sorry to butt in on yet another thread. .......but where do you get the clear wrap or organza bag and the plastic lid with 2 holes?
  20. tootie..........is that true, if you don't pour cool enough, it could affect scent throw?! I have never heard that one before. I thought you only poured cool for less frosting and smooth tops! Maybe that is what's wrong with some fo's I'm having no luck with. I never pour slushly(125 is as cool as i let it get) and I use 435 , which is similiar to 135, I think. Well, I'm gonna try that! I can't get peach magnolia rasberry to throw for nothing! I tried 1.3 oz and 1.5 oz, nada. Presently I am curing it for 2 weeks to see if that was it. Soooooo possibly, less fo and pour slushy? (Sorry didn't mean to butt in):undecided Oh and Tennessee Candle Supply has CD wicks for $6.00 per 100, which is pretty good. Try a cd-14 in that 7 oz and a cd-16 in the 11 oz. HTH ( thats ballpark, give you a start to go up or down)Oh and make sure you are NOT buying your fo from a hobby store like A.C. Moore or Micheals....they don't have throw worth nothing. Try Bittercreek or better yet Bluegrass Candle Supply. Their scents will knock your socks off!
  21. ummmm, I know you are tired of all my questions, but where do you buy coconut oil? and you're right all the boxes have the same date on them.........this is what it says..........11-03-07 TK7 SH1B 00:46 (or 80:46)Thanks a million for all your help
  22. I like 464 because it is easy to work with , nothing to add, creamy smooth surfaces most of the time, you can keep the frosting at bay, seems easy to wick, good hot throw most of the time.Oh and this I love! YOU CAN POUR IT HOT! (145 degrees)Little impatient me loves that about it........ I am currently testing 435 because it was reccommended to me as having a better hot throw than the 464............boy has it not been easy to work with. Terrible frosting , not easy to get smooth tops , can't pour hot(125 degrees and LESS) ,don't even know if it has good hot throw cause I can't seem to get the wicking down. But still hoping once I get it figured out that I will love it! I hope I'm not beating my head against a wall for nothing! lol! OH and this I reccommend, buy a bottle of blueberry muffin or cobbler and try it in your waxes. IF this won't throw in it , keep looking...................
  23. oh so it could be the batch I have? hmm, what do I look for on the boxes to know? I got my wax from alabaster and they had just started carrying it, so I don't know where it came from...would it work to open another box and try the wax out of it? or is it probable that its all the same, since I bought it all at once? I really appreciate the offer to try your wax, let me try the cd 14's again before I put you thru that trouble! thanks so much!
  24. Yeah, I was curious about that also(above post), would love to see your reply!
