It sounds to me like you need to add vybar. Vybar makes the wax opaque and helps it to bind with the FO. It will stop the snowflakes you are getting. There are 2 types of vybar, one for lowmet and another for high temp wax. Check on your supplier's website. They will have the specifics. Do post a pic! Congrats on getting started. Don't give up, you will get it! Dat

Wow I feel like Andy Warhol. I have never been misquoted and so many extra words attributed to me. I am actually the least "wordy" person on this board. JAPES- I did not say or mean "shut up" or "leave us alone". I meant - "GO try it for yourself." Asking all these questions and multitude of answers you will get will only confuse you. When I started making candles I read about 30 supplier's instructions and 4 message boards from beginning to end. I was so confused. I finally turned the computer off and just poured some candles. I have tried 4 different waxes and settled on blending my own. I don't like any of the preblends. Go find some straight low melt paraffin and mix in the additives. You will truly learn a lot about chemistry and what not to do. So I say again. JUMP IN! Get you feet waxed. Quit waiting from someone to tell you what you want to hear. And you are ARE being rude and abusive to members on this board. Dat

Japes just go make the candle. You will not have the perfect candle until you make one. Everyone has different opinions on what and who is the best supplier. and they are just OPINIONS. yours will be different. You are just gonna have to jump in a and mess up like the rest of us! Dat

How to make Peach color??
DatCandleMaker replied to AngelaVA's topic in General Candle Making Discussions
A color wheel is just an artist's tool to depict the flow and mix of colors to create new colors. It is not a specific tool or website. I am sure if you search the term you will find lots of hits. Any chart that shows how colors blend from one to the next is a variation of the color wheel. Dat -
How to make Peach color??
DatCandleMaker replied to AngelaVA's topic in General Candle Making Discussions
The color wheel people. Didn't ya'll take art in school?? There are 3 primary colors that all other colors are derived from Red, Blue and Yellow. With those 3 colors you can mix any other color that you can dream up. No need to buy 30 different variations of dye. The white wax gives you the "lightness" for shading. I do buy brown to dull my colors, but that is the only one other than the 3 primaries. Gives me more money to spend on FO for example. Easiest burgandy - 3 parts red 1 part brown perfect burgandy every time. Mixing in crisco is a great idea too! I had not thought of that trick. You could make your own color blocks if you are so inclined. A good use of leftover wax. Dat -
Looking for constructive criticism ...

How about making the keyhole 50% transparent. Then you can have both. I like the keyhole and the door. But the keyhole is overpowering. If you make it transparent then the door will come through - kinda like a looking glass effect. It might not work, but in my mind's eye it looks great! Dat -

Blistering, Pin Holes, Im loosing my mind...
DatCandleMaker replied to VictoriaK's topic in General Candle Making Discussions
Hi Victoria. I am one of the few that uses straight Paraffin for votives. I do not like preblends because you need a different wax for each application. So I do my own "blends". You will find that with straight paraffin you can add your own additives and come up with your own blends - thus custom waxes that are unique to you. Kinda neat when it is all said and done. Personally, with all the problems with inconsistencies with preblends .... anyway I digress. Since you are using straight Paraffin, you need to poke relief holes and do a 2nd pour. This will help the pitting as well. I am not as well versed in all the technical mumbo jumbo - but the wax cooling and pulling away from the sides of the molds causes some of the pitting. Relief holes will help prevent this. Since you are adding vybar, you can use the 130 melt point Paraffin and you will end up with nice creamy votives. Good luck! Dat -
I love the name game!!!! You can exchange candles for soap or bath or scents or whatever describes your business. If you are not sure which way your business will go just leave that part off! Pretty Simple Candles Simple Country Candles Pretty Country Soaps Pretty Different Aromas Ageless Aromatics Good Luck! Dat

I am surprised, it looks like the flame would drown as the "apples" melted. Also looks like the wax would run over the side of the flower pot. JMHO Dat

Have you test burned one of these yet? Just wondering how the flame will do. Dat

Candle Warmers & Vegetable Wax WARNING
DatCandleMaker replied to TartAddict's topic in General Candle Making Discussions
Could it have something to do with the Flash Point of the vegetable waxes? I know the flash point of IGI Comfort Blend and Harmony Blend are 190 or so. Dat -
Could you use their initials or shorten their names. You would be honoring their memory but making the business name easier to pronunciate. P&V Candeles ?????? either way I like it. I think making the name personal and the story behind it is wonderful. My company name has nothing to do with candles, but the story behind it is very nice and people always remember it Good luck! At least 1 of each scent. The touch feel and smell of the scent will feed the IMPULSE and your orders. But be willing to SELL what you have on hand. Set you delivery times as SOON as you can possible can. You come out better than the PH person and everyone is happy. It sounds like a nice combo between cash/carry and order only! Win for you and win for guests! Good Luck Dat

Removing Wick Tab From Jar
DatCandleMaker replied to Henryk's topic in General Candle Making Discussions
Heat in the oven to clean the jar then pull on the tab with pliers. It should come right out. It might leave some of the adhesive, but it should be fine. Dat -
Ice cube trays for tarts?
DatCandleMaker replied to FragileXmom's topic in General Candle Making Discussions
You can use ice cube trays. If they are inexpensive ones the FO might eat through the plactic. I bought some of the fruit slice ones at Dollar Tree and the FO ate right through them I have some mini metal muffin tins that I use. I only use left over wax to pour tarts with so they work out perfectly. I love the size I get. Good luck! Dat -

Hey E.... i think I have heard of that scent Dat
-
Well I would guess that is why alot of people like it. 1. It is dependable. 2. You can use 1 wax, add your own additives and get your OWN CUSTOM BLEND instead of buying 6 different waxes from a supplier and having the exact same product as everyone else that buys the preblend waxes from the suppliers. We are not all drones. We can read, learn and do the blending for ourselves. Dat

So then should we call it the Robert Frost scent? or "I took the one less travelled by"? that is my favorite poem by the way, has been since the 4th grade. thanks for the memory! He also wrote another great poem Mending Wall, if anyone s interested in looking it up Dat

and my question is WHY? Peaks is not the first supplier to drop IGI products and go to "custom blend" products. What is that about? I just don't get it. Any ideas???????? Dat

are you using an inkjet printer? They do not pull the paper exactly on each feed so this could be what is causing the problem. If you enlarge your background to print larger than the actual label it will stop any white area around the edges. You can always print the background first, then run the labels back through the printer to print the actual text on the label. Also, don't use a pattern that will look off center if they do miss a bit. ie...don't put a solid circle around the edge of the label. If you can afford a laser printer it will feed the labels more consistently. Good Luck Dat

I like the idea of tarts and did them for my first fundraiser too. I saw how the kids used them and mistreated them though so I WILL NOT do them again. If you are doing the order form for them, then put a description on each scent type. I used the fragrance finder to help me write up a description. Good luck. Just remember: YOU ARE THE BOSS. Do commit to more than you think you can handle. and KISS! Keep It Simple Stupid Dat

Suggestions: 1. I would have as many pots as scents. That way you can by pass the pour pots and fill the container straight from the presto pot. Would save a step. 2. Offer a limited number of scents. 3. If it is the type of fund raiser where the kids take orders, you need to require at least 50% of the fees at the time they place the order. This will cover your costs and keep you from getting stiffed. The remainder is payable UPON delivery of product. 4. Make a detailed contract and have the HEAD of the organization that is hosting the fund raiser sign it. Good luck and congrats!!! Dat
