  1. Our Michaels doesn't have much when it comes to candles. Did you mean like this? http://www.candle4less.com/12-Clear-Glass-Tea-Light-Candle-Holders.pr.1671.htm
  2. Do you have a photo of these? I googled it but the only ones I saw basically look like chipped chunks of wax. Maybe crumble a piece of foil sprayed w/mold release and lay it in a baking pan also sprayed with mold release - pour the wax, then chip off pieces with a knife.
  3. I don't have a small pot either - just the larger one and my candy thermometer almost reached the wax, but not quite. I did what the other person suggested and tilted the melting pot and balanced it. That got the tip of the thermometer in the wax and I didn't have to purchase anything else.
  4. What does this add or why is it necessary in lotions? I've seen it in quite a few formulations.
  5. These are 3 1/2 x 2 3/4 x 1 1/4" - can you maybe just make it slightly smaller in thickness? http://www.masonbox.com/browse.cfm?item=598
  6. They get better with a little age. After 3 weeks, I'm sure they'll lather much better. I use 90% coconut and 10% castor
  7. oooh - thank you. A clamshell is a plastic container! I thought it was something made of wax :embarasse
  8. Can I add beeswax to cb135 to make it harder for tarts?
  9. Does anyone have a photo of what a clamshell is??
  10. Ok - the tins sound good! I'm not sure how to make floaters or if the cb 135 would work for these? But I can handle the tins
  11. I've seen these mentioned lots of places and tried doing a search but I can't find a photo. What are these?? :embarasse
  12. Candlescience accidentally sent me 3" HTP 52 wicks instead of 6" - they also forgot to send one fo sample I ordered. They were very nice about it, replaced the wicks and sent me two additional samples for not getting the order right. (the Violet Lime and Coconut lime Verbena are YUMMY). Soooo, I'm just a very beginner, just now pouring my first soy container candles. What do I do with 3" HTP 52 wicks??? And there are 100 of them at that :undecided
  13. Have you tried to use Avery's Label wizard? It's free off their site. It says it includes all avery labels. I'm a graphic designer and usually use Adobe Illustrator for my circular labels so I can't help you with software recommendations other than Avery. I know a lot of folks who use this for their soap labels.
  14. I make mine for personal/gift use. I made it to sell for a little while and had a market for it, but found out I didn't like the 'mass production' and would rather make small custom batches.
  15. I like it up to 20% in soaps. If you're looking for a rich bar, you might want to try hemp, too. Don't know about fresh avocado though. The lye will probably turn that to brown mush :undecided
  16. While I'm brand new at this and probably don't rate real high yet for giving advice, there is a place by me with lots of different type of jars. http://www.fillmorecontainer.com/dept.asp?deptID=3 The jars themselves don't look particularly country I don't think until you pair them with the lids. They have those rustic rusty tin lids with the handles on them that to me, looks primitive and country http://www.fillmorecontainer.com/product.asp?deptID=2&sku=ERMFL%2DR&sID=DHNNSEN67FL19JTHUNF3H7NVNC500439 They also have rustic cut-out star jar lids and lampshades
  17. Rats - oh well. My order was wrong and candlescience is sending me new wicks anyway. I did as topofmurrayhill suggested and exchanged them for the wick kit - which has different sizes. These wicks shown here, another local chandler gave me to try because I wanted to start right away and didn't feel like waiting for my order to be resent. I'll try the larger wicks. I'm not wedded to these containers either - they were quick and cheap at the dollar store. I'm real close to Fillmore container and I can pick some up there. I didn't know about the 3" max for soy with one wick - thanks! Is it dangerous to burn with a smaller wick, or will they just not burn with a full melt pool? I wanted to send the first one I made to my daughter, but not if it's a hazard. Nancy
  18. The top of the candle container is 3", but the majority of the wax is in the more tapered part at 2 1/2". The wick is HT 52. I used 1oz per lb of FOs, except for the lavender where I used 1 oz in 13 oz of wax. The top to the lavender came out really rough. Don't know if it was the increase in FO or not but that's the only thing I really did differently for that one.
  19. I poured my first 3 soy candles today The tops on the orange and lavender are a bit grainy, but the third one I poured came out very smooth! I tried hitting the two grainy ones with a heat gun but that only seemed to exacerbate things once the wax cooled again :undecided Actually I'm not really worried about the tops too much cuz my major concern is the test burn. If they don't burn, it won't matter HOW pretty and smooth the tops are:grin2: Guess I'll have to be patient and wait for them to cure before the test burn. I did have a little wax left over and ended up pouring it into a plastic cup. Popped it out once it was cool and I have a not-so-great looking but very great smelling 'tart' for my tart burner. I did try that already and the throw seems very good! Here's my first try - (the orange is Black Current & Nectarine, the Lavender - Lavender, and the Aqua - Clean Cotton)
  20. I have some sweetcakes fo's leftover from soapmaking that i'm not going to use for soap. Had anyone tried their Special Vanilla in soy?
  21. OK, thanks - so when I ordered the FO samples from candlescience and they are 1oz each - is that weight or volume???
  22. Thanks, but now I'm even more confused. If I fill it with water and measure how much water goes into the container, then do I use the shredded wax per the same *volume* as the water, or do I weigh the wax?? I'm assuming the weight of the wax would be different than the volume that would fit in the container? I'm confusing myself more trying to explain it :undecided
  23. I'm about to pour my first soy candles this weekend. I did receive the wrong wicks in the mail :undecided but was able to pick up some locally that I think will be ok replacements for a start. I used the calculators here and my 3" diameter containers that are 4.5" high should use 16 oz of wax according to the calculation. If I go by the formula 1oz of FO for every lb of wax, that means I use a whole ounce of FO for this container?? It seems like an awful lot of fragrance oil given the volume of the container. Does that sound right? Nancy
  24. I'm a graphic designer - just a beginner candle maker. Even though you're a while from getting your site up, it will be hard to design/organize without knowing what products you can make and cannot make - ie sell or will not sell. If you've not made candles before and you're just looking for a template type design - which I guess is about all you can do without having any content at all - you can place just about any graphic in there to see how it looks. As long as you're not publishing it and no one is seeing it but you, you can take a graphic from anywhere and put it on there for placement. Try gettyimages.com.
