  1. Ok, I feel dumb now. Disregard what I wrote about double wicking the glass glow. I didn't use glass glow for this test, I used the S&P wax. (Sometimes I think all these fo's must go to my head *faint* )
  2. Oh boy, I need them too and they are backordered at YES also. I'll look around too and see if I can find any anywhere else.
  3. Does anyone know if there is a place (wally world, craft store, etc.) that you can buy small tins? Or is this something that can only be ordered? I'm thinking of trying Michaels, but it's an hour drive for me so I figured I'd ask first to see if anyone has ever found any there.
  4. The other day I made a test candle with my 8 oz. madison jars. I usually wick it with a single CSN 14 and the flame is fine after the first half hour or so. However, I could not get a very good scent throw or a completely clean-sided burn. Just for Sh*ts and giggles, I double wicked it with two CSN 7's. I've burning it twice (3 hrs each) and so far so good! I'm not jumping to conclusions yet because I haven't burned it to the bottom yet though. I do have clean sides and small flames though.
  5. That's a tough questions since every area's market is different. In my area, I think people would pay no more than $7 for an 8oz. mason. Providing it looked nice and smelled great . Other areas, though, you might be able to set it at $10 and people would think it's a great price.
  6. I'm looking for a great, straight coconut. Who has a good one?
  7. Ok, thanks. I'll take all advice into consideration. I think I'm just making it too hard for myself by transfering the melted wax into a different pot to add the scent. See, I melt a whole pour pot of wax (4 lbs) and then measure it (weigh it on a scale) into a different pot with the fo in it (yes, I minus the weight of the fo first to get an accurate 16 oz.). I have found that with this process the temp of the wax greatly diminishes if I do not heat up my pot with the fo in it first. And yes, it does take quite a while for my thermometer to reach 200. It's the last 5 degrees that takes a while. Maybe I should just break down and buy a presto pot. I'm going to try again today, and do it simple like JUdy suggested. maybe I'm "overthinking" this whole thing.
  8. Thank you all!!!! I'll keep trying and I think I'll stop warming my oil first. I'll see if that helps
  9. I just can't seem to get it right! I follow directions, I use 7% fo and I have tried many "strong throwers" and still I'm not getting a candle I like. Yes, I have had success with a few fo's but most of them that I have tried don't work well. I'm not having any luck with cold throw now. To me, it's not as important as hot throw (because right now I only make for myself, not sell) but down the road if I do sell I want a candle that smells good cold too. Maybe someone with a lot of experience with palm can tell me what I'm doing wrong. I heat a bunch (unmeasured) wax to 200 using a double boiler method, and then add the wax to a different pot that has premeasured fo in it (warmed in the oven so the fo doesn't lower the temp of the wax when I add it). The pot I use to put the fo in has a line on it to where I pour the warmed wax to. This I had premeasured once and is an accurate 16 oz. (by weight). I then stir for about 3 minutes and then pour immediately.I do have to poke relief holes and then once it's hardened up I either use my broiler or a heat gun (hair dryer) to melt the tops and the melted wax fills in the holes. What am I doing wrong? I really want to get this wax figured out . I have tried CS frost palm and currently am using S & P's veggie/palm. I have used mostly Bert's fo's (b/c they are cheap in cost, I admit). I have used some good throwers from her (xmas tree, candy cane, and a couple others) and I have tried a few from the candle source (J &J bedtime bath, melonberry, spicy apples and peaches) and I have just had "ok" results. They throw, but not GREAT and the cold throw is much to be desired. Does anyone have any advice for me? I'm tempted to go back to soy. :undecided
  10. I'm no expert, but for what it's worth, I have also tried several wicks with palm (glass glow being one of them). I found that the CSN wickes from Candle science are the best so far. Yes, I will get a big flame for the first 10 minutes or so, but then it dies down when it starts consuming the wax and it's fine. I hate to even admit this, but....I don't trim my wicks either. I have found that in my 8 oz. jar (2 3/4 diameter) I can wick most fo's with a CSN 14. HTH!
  11. Ok, an update. I broke down and burned my candy cane tester a little early. I mixed palm and a little paraffin (80/20...by the way, it DOES take away the crystal appearance) added 6% fo,uncolored and it cured for 24 hours. I wicked with a CSN 14. The candle had amazing cold throw so I was convinced it would give a great hot throw even after only 24 hrs. Well, it sure did!!!! It filled my whole main floor easily!Initially, it gave a tiny fuel smell, but after burning for about a half hour it was gone and all I could smell was sweet, minty candy cane. . As for wicking, so far so good with this mix. I have NOT burned it all the way down yet so I can't decide of the wicking is correct right now or not but it does give off an excellent hot throw. I also poured christmas tree, apple pie and mac apple. I'll let you all know about those too for what it's worth. I know not many people use the blend I'm using so I'm not sure how much it will help anyone, lol.
  12. I poured that today too! It's my tester with my blend of palm and paraffin I'm trying. I'm going to burn it in a couple days but I can tell that it is going to be VERY strong!
  13. Has anyone done it? I just poured a test candle that I will burn in a week or so (man I hate waiting!!) that is palm, uncolored, 7% fo and 2 3/4 in diameter. I have been using CSN 14's or 16's mostly, but I just can't get a good scent throw and now I'm thinking maybe I'm over wicking? So, I tried it this time with a CSN 12 (like candlescience recommends for this size). I've got my big candle down (I use two csn 9's) that has a 3 1/4 " diamter, it's just these little ones that are driving me nuts, lol.
  14. I just poured cranberry chutney from TCS and I haven't burned it yet but I LOVE the smell of it when I was mixing. No spice smell to it, very sweet but not too sweet. Hard to describe, but it's good.
  15. Will a wick that is too big tunnel? What causes tunneling? I'm using palm and I'm having a heck of a time wicking my small container (2 3/4") right. I thought I had it right, but now I think my wicks might be too big as I just test burned a new fo and it's tunneling like mad, plus no scent throw.
  16. I use a laser printer, and it does bleed. However, I just noticed that the labels say "ink jet" on the front of them. That could be my problem, huh? :embarasse Does spraying something (like in the link above) on them work? I might have to try that. I don't really want to put a label over another label...that's expensive.
  17. I use two sizes of Madison Jars. I am using the 8 oz ones with a diameter of 2 3/4" and I wick it with either a CSN 14 or 16 depending on the fo. When I burn, it does not initially burn like a soy/paraffin candle would. It does not give a complete melt pool until around the third burn or so. It will tunnel and then eventually catch up and melt the sides down. I'm pretty sure this is just how this wax is suppose to perform. I also use the big 18 oz Madison jars that are tall. They have a diameter of 3". I have never been able to single wick them, so I double wick them with either a CSN 7 or CSN 9 (again, depending on the fo). Because I double wick, this creates a melt pool just like a soy or paraffin would. It will burn all the way across on the first burn. However, it does not get too hot or a too deep melt pool towards the bottom. (weird, I know :rolleyes2 ). The fo's I've tried have mostly been from the candle source and berts (hit and miss with those so far). I have also tried a few known strong throwers from JS with pretty good luck. I do cure for at least a week too. I also think I need to get some candle testers. I ordered some comfort blend and I am going to try to compare the two. Maybe it's not the wax at all, maybe it's just me:wink2: . I also am going to play around with adding some of the comfort blend to the palm to see what happens if the throw is good in just the comfort blend.
  18. Thank you stella. Actually, I don't make a "wickless" candle (and now I know not to with palm) I only have made clamshell tarts which work great with no problems so far. I'm using CSN wicks from Candle Science, which I thought were supposed to be for palm/veggie waxes. I do get a great MP and I thought I had the wicking down, but maybe I don't. I guess I'll just have to keep plugging away at it .
  19. I'm having such a hard time getting my palm container candles to throw VERY well and I'm so frustrated that I'm thinking of just doing wickless. I don't sell yet, but eventually I would like to I think. My melts (using the same exact wax and fo load as my containers) throw so much better in my electric warmer that I'm thinking this may be the way to go. What are your thoughts on making/selling wickless (clamshells or tarts too)only? I would obviously have to buy the warmers wholesale and sell those too along with the wickless. Do you think there is a market for this? For those of you that only sell wickless how are you doing? I don't intend to get rich off this obviously, but if I could eventually sell what I love to make that would be great, lol.
  20. I use clear labels for my candles and I'm having a problem with the colors bleeding or rubbing off if the label gets wet. Can I put something on them that sort of "waterproofs" them?
  21. Ok, I just ordered a 25lb. bag from CS to test with palm. I'll let you all know how it goes.
  22. Thank you. I'm not very concerned with the crystalization (sp?) of the wax since I don't color my candles. I just don't like soy. I think it has a funny smell to it that my nose picks up. I'd like to try it to see what happens. I'm just sick and tired of trying so many fo's and have them not throw well. They throw, just not like I would like.
