  1. I would worry too if I were you. The method described with spray paint will make one heck of a fire. Stay away from this method!
  2. Angle Iron? Huh? Please explain. The link above is dead. Here's what we use:
  3. Curious. How is "dipping" a candle going to give you a metalic and glazed finish? What exactly did they dip it in?
  4. Barker use to buy their mold from Pourette. Barker was absorbed by Pourette. Barker was just an over-priced reseller. Pourette is a great company. I've been buying from them since I'm 17 years old.
  5. Pretty much because there is so much mis-information out there and also because there is a lot of junk out there for people to buy. You have all these different "pre-blended" waxes -- gone are the days of some para and some ster. acid. (or Vybar) -- and fragrance. Today the carrier for the fragrances are junk that clog wicks and cause trouble. People got scared of zinc (don't trust it to not be lead) -- so you have all different paper cores, etc. Things have just gotten complicated, because there is a more complicated list of things out there. If you stick with the basics: Wax (raw para) Vybar (Sterine if you're super-crazy hardcore) Wick (sized to size of mold or container) Scent (if scented) Dye (Powder or chips for newbies) Don't forget your can of silicone spray. UV If you must... but I think Vybar helps -- most don't agree. (Clear Crystals -- makes wax glow more, is fun to toy with) Anyway... have fun, and play. Don't look at it as testing = bad. Look at it as the mad scientist. I've been making candles full time for almost 20 years. I've watch A LOT of trends... in the end, you can do almost everything and anything with the basics. I know I don't make friends here by saying this, but do yourself a favor and don't waste your time or money on these "blended" waxes.
  6. Go to a medical/surgal supply store and look around... you'll find lots.
  7. Wick size, burn time, melt point of wax... those are key.
  8. IGI and Anchor are rip-off artists. Stick with small companies that will work with you. I can buy glass for 40% what the pallet price is with Anchor. IGI is even worse. $.82 a pound for 140? Hehe. Yeah right. $.68 is the going price per pallet. Buy it by truck/container and it goes down into the $.50's. If you like Middle-Men... there is nothing I can do. I'm only here to try and help. P.S. Binder (Candlewic), Pourette, Chemessence, and many others will waive their minimum (which is usually only $100)... all you have to do is ask.
  9. I don't understand what the big deal is here. This "C&S" from what I can see on their website is a middle-man. Looks like they buy a lot of Pourette and Binder -- along with Chemessence and a few other companies things. Then they mark them up and have the guts to over-price shipping. The solution is a simple one. Buy the stuff from the source, save money on the item and don't get the shaft on the shipping. Duh,
  10. Out of curiousity... what are you guys selling a skid of 140-142F FR Para for per lb FOB?
  11. Looks like you have a NJ facility too... Wax out of there?
  12. I offered to by 2 pallets a month from IGI for 12 months (contract price). The best price they could offer me was $.82 a pound FOB their plant!!!! That worked out to over $.90 delivered. IGI is out of hand. I can buy 1 pallet at a time and get it delivered for $.70. IGI only wants to sell full truck-loads and liquid para. and even THEN their prices are a joke. Just my 2 pennies.
  13. I can honestly say, if that works, I would patent it. Sounds silly, but I see some of the ideas people have for keeping the wick staight and they are plain silly. This, on the other hand is smart. You could even make the straw out of a silicone coated poly or something to add value. Good Job.
  14. Sorry, didn't mean to insult you. I just think that when you can buy wax for $.68 a lb (Or less for softer) and add a few additives and have the same thing as you do when you pay double that it is a scam. Why not just buy the additives and make your own blend. Spend the extra money on better (or more) scent, and make an even better product for the same cost? But hey, sorry, I was only trying to save you money AND help you make a better product. I just see the fun in taking wax that is already to go and melthing it and pouring it. Heck, if I want to do that, why not buy a candle already made, melt it down and start over... just add a little extra scent. Again, sorry to have offended you.
  15. Ahhh. I see. Soft slabbed 120s are very common and usually among the cheapest. From everything I've seen a lot of these "container blends" are nothing but low melt-point and petrolatum, and some low-melt point applied Vybar - Maybe a hint of Micro, etc. Call me crazy, but I just don't see the point with blends. But, like you said, to each his own. :)
  16. Actually, fully refines straight parrafin can be had in anything from the 120s to the 160s+ -- not sure where the 130 "just below just above" thing came from. To say something that most folks here don't to hear is this: blends are pretty much a scam. They are less work, but they often cost a lot more than straight waxes. Most candles can be made with straight parrafin, vybar and UV. One Step (1 Pour) is an exception to this when it comes to labor savings... aside from that, One Steps really offer little good in the way of burn. There are many bulk additive that you can add to the wax yourself, refine your own blend to perfection and save money. AND be a Master Chander!
  17. Ok. List kind of wax Quantity Price Per Pound DELIVERED. Your Location (It's ok if you want to keep it a secret WHERE you buy it from... that is understandable) Me First. 142 Melt Point Striaght Para (NOT Blend) 2000 +/- Lbs. (One Pallet) $.70 Delivered (Per Pound) New Jersey
  18. Just thought I'd see if any of you folks have a toll free number for your business. I've been thinking about, but don't know yet.
  19. I have to say. I have carved thousands of cut/curl candles in my time... and sold all different kinds. You are easily in the top 5%. What are your plans? Sell them retail? Wholesale? Craft only? Fill me in.
  20. Straight para and vybar... I run white pillar candles and they come as white as bright white paper.
  21. That's might hurt... :tiptoe: Oh NO! He DIDN'T just say *that*!
  22. I say we start soaking bears in gasoline, then we can store them in the trunk of our car. When we run out of gas we just squeeze and go. Hehe. Sorry, but this bear thing has me TOTALLY baffled. Don't get me wrong, I think folks will make money with them. I just don't see it, personally.
