Wicking 464 and 6006
MilosCandles replied to Lulu Belles's topic in General Candle Making Discussions
I use GB444 I did use 464 to start with but found the melt point to be too low to sell at shows in the summer. I ended up switching to 444. With 444 and a 3 inch tumbler I use either CD16 or CD18. Since it is 464 use can probably get away with CD12 or 14. Hope they helps a little. -

@CorgiCaperI use GW 444 for my candles and melts, works great for both. GW 464 would never work.

Anybody use a jar like this? https://www.fillmorecontainer.com/fc53232-case36anchor.html Do you use lids? I was looking at the CS Straight Sided Tumbler but wanted something a little bigger https://www.candlescience.com/containers/straight-sided-tumbler-jar-libbey Open to ideas for something similar or another vendor. Thanks

Photographing products for on-line sales
MilosCandles replied to Forrest's topic in Business Side of Things
Can you post a sample? You lighting may not be good enough (bright enough) to begin with. -
In New York it is just $25 every 2 years for an LLC. $200 to set it up plus $5 if you want hard copies mailed to you. Not too bad. Then I just do taxes as if I was a DBA also because I did a "Single Member LLC". Nothing really changes. Though I guess I will find out a year from now. The bank worked out much easier than I thought... I emailed everything to the one girl at the branch earlier in the day, when I got there just answered a few questions, signed a bunch of docs and I was all set up in less than an 45 minutes. Now to change ETSY, and AMAZON, and anywhere where else I have business and banking info.

The Banks in Buffalo are not too bad. BUT the usually ask 100 questions and want you to know projected sales. Ummm I am selling candles out of my basement... probably avg $1 million in sales each year... LOL (I WISH!!!)

Just some info for anyone thinking about becoming a "REAL" business. So I had a Sole Proprietor DBA setup for myself, and as I have grown and expanded I slowly began to change my name and wanted to be better protected. As of Jan 3rd I am now officially 716 Candle Co LLC. I used this service - https://www.incfile.com/ I did the "Gold Plan". The $150 I spent (plus $200 to file in New York) seemed like a pretty good deal. Got all my paper work done, and properly filed. I still need to list it in 2 news papers and pay for that. The extra money I spent on the Gold plan is all things I probably could of done myself with little to no cost except for time. I feel like I saved myself quite a few hours by going with the GOLD plan. In New York I created a Single Member LLC. Just applied for my Sales Tax Number and I need to head to the bank to open a new bank account. Updated and Renewed my membership and insurance with HSCG. I think I spent about 2 hours total on all of this. I am sure I have another 2 hours at the Bank (LOL) and a little bit time to deal with listing info in Local Papers.

Not really. Usually a retailer just want to be able to keystone the price. Meaning double the wholesale cost. Other than that nothing special. Are they doing wholesale or consignment?

Photographing products for on-line sales

I am sure you can on the phone editor. But usually I have 10-15 (or more) pics I am cropping at one time. On the computer is easier (for me) and I can see if the pictures are OK on a larger screen. Usually there are a few that are blurry or off a little which is easier to see on my computer screen. -
How Can You Sell & Profit This Way?
MilosCandles replied to Quentin's topic in Business Side of Things
So people really just do not know how to calculate what an item costs. I have a rather large spreadsheet to know what my costs are. Some people just guess. @Quentin At my last job the owners would always say "But we will make it up in volume". I always laughed at that. -

I do not do 1:1 when I take my pictures. I crop them after. I always use the highest MP I can. It also depends on where you are uploading them. ON my website I use SMALL versions cause I want the page to load quickly. On ETSY/Amazon they scale my pictures after I upload them so I use as large of an image I can. -
I use a combination of items. Boxes, Bubble wrap, Crinkle Paper, and Kraft Paper. Depends on what I am shipping. And then always happy to re-use packaging that was shipped to me.

Where do you get it? Have a link?

@earthfriendly These worked awesome. They were a little small but a cut in one side allowed them to expand to needed size. You can see the cuts in the one side of them. -
I guess the other bit of info I forgot to include.... To print my shipping labels I use a Dymo 4xl label printer. This thing is a dream. You can find generic labels for it pretty cheap. It is heat transfer so no ink needed. I just love this thing https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dymo-LabelWriter-4XL-Label-Printer-LabelWriter-4XL-Label-Printer/362512428608 For a LONG time I used full sheet with 2 labels on it. Run it through my laser printer, and run it through again turned around to print on the 2nd label.

Here is my collection. The "Merry Christmas" is a gift message that was asked for. The "Thank you for your Purchase" is my card I include. Both of which are just printed on the back of the post card. My simple business card also.

Tonight is the 1st night in at least the 6-8 weeks that I have ALL orders made (as of this minute) . It has been an exhausting season and it is hard to believe Christmas is less than a week away. Having this small business is great but I miss so much of the season. I work my 9-5 job during the day and then come home go in the basement every night, and usually spend most of the weekends here also. I know any orders I get tomorrow (Wed) can still make it in the mail (by thursday) and in time for xmas. So I know I will have a few more last minute orders. I try to accommodate all last minute shoppers. The 1st year I did this I needed to shut down my etsy store just a few days into December. I was not even close to prepared for the number of orders I was going to get. Which is about a days work this year. This was my 4th xmas season, and I thought last year was crazy. My sales increased WAY more that I could imagine and I generally kept my head above water for the most part. I do enjoy the rush I get seeing the number of sales coming in though. LOL BUT I am looking forward to getting back to somewhat of a normal life. And it being OK to take a few nights away from the basement and going to bed before midnight.
