  1. If you have a little wax hanging on the sides of your jar, then your wicking may be just a hair too small. How thick is the hangup? If it's just a very thin scum, and the candle burns well otherwise, it may not be much of a concern. If it is 1/8 to 1/4 inch, you should try wicking up one size. geek
  2. Even though I currently use the same soy as MC 125 (415) the 444 is a little easier to work with, and doesn't require extra additives, like beeswax or USA. You can pour it at about 135, and it seems to take color a little better. It does need about a week cure time to throw at it's best. geek
  3. If you are using 3/4 ox FO in 8 0z wax, that would be a 9% FO load. HTP126 is pretty big for an 8 oz JJ even with a heavy FO. What you describe is OK, though a bit unusual with 100% soy and 9% load. geek
  4. I use what is referred to as a 16 oz Apothecary from the Candlemaker's Store, but it is more of a Keepsake jar and 16 oz if you fill it all the way up the neck to the very top. It actually will hold 12 oz when filled to the base of the neck. The jar is 3 1/2 inches wide, and the mouth is 3 inches wide. I never have any sooting problems in the wax with these jars. You can get either a globe or a flat glass closed fitment. HTH! geek
  5. Forget about all that. I just wanna know where babies come from geek
  6. I am getting this also, but not due to wax or wick, but in anthing I put in Jar Store's Melting Pot jar. I think it has to do with air turbulence. I only get the soot deposits when the candle is burned down halfway into the jar. I really like the looks of the jar, but I don't like how it does that. I'm about ready to give up on it. geek
  7. From what I've seen and heard over the past year, at one time paraffin could only hold about 3% FO load. When techniques and wax blends improved, then they could hold 6% load, thus "double scented." Then someone got the bright idea to run it up to 9% and advertise it as "triple scented." It's mostly an advertising gimmick, since most A-grade FOs can throw well at 5% to 7%. professor geek :rolleyes2
  8. I've made a big monster candle like that with chunks. Depending on the MP, you can try a #2 primed square braid or #3. The 139 MP paraffin probably can use a #2, and 147 a #3. geek
  9. Soory to hear about your frosting problems What I have tried and works, but rejected due to additional time and expense, was to preheat an oven to about 150, place your poured candles in the oven, turn off heat, and allow to cool very slowly in the oven. The colors turn out very nice, smooth tops, and no frosting! Depending on the FO and color, some frosting creeps back a little after successive burns, but it is not too bad. Also I plan on offering uncolored candles for sale, and upon request coloring with pastel shades to minimize the bad look when frosting reappears. geek
  10. Since the 464 is pretty soft, you could start with 2 x LX16. I have a 4 inch bail jar with 415/402/USA (a slightly harder finished wax blend) with 7% MC Banana Nut Bread, and I use 2 x LX18, so the LX16 would be a great one to begin with. Sorry I don't know much about ECOs. geek
  11. This proves that the heat gun is indeed the most versatile candle making tool ever! geek
  12. Thank you for all the great advice! I must learn to be more patient. I have a tester with 415/BW, 9% Pumpkin Spice in 16 oz keepsake. Will wait a week then burn with Premier 798, if it won't clean the sides after 3 burns then I'm switching to two LXs. I know I will have awesome fall holiday sales! All the free candle gifts mrs geek handed out last year have primed the pump, now I'm getting lots of requests. geek
  13. Thanks for the replies! It's too late for me to find another and test before Thanksgiving, so I'm going to push the FO load up, wick test, and then give one to someone with a "fresh" nose to do a final test. geek
  14. I've never ordered FO from candlechem, but have purchased other items and his service is very good. He is a reliable and trusted eBay candle supply seller. geek
  15. I got some MC Pumpkin Spice to round out my holiday FO line, and I am so disappointed! Barely any hot throw, you have to stand over it to get any whiff of it. Smells great OOB though. I've tried it in 415/402/USA blend, 415/BW blend, and KY Parasoy using WI795/WI798 but still all have no hot throw! 7% load. I even burned one for nine (9) hours and nothing! Anyone else have trouble with this FO? geek
  16. The BW does help the hot throw, and depending on your pour temp it does smooth out the tops. Mostly the smooth tops occur when the candle sets up after a burn. It doesn't help out with frosting though, you need to really slow down the cooling to minimize frosting. geek
  17. I do like them but it is tough for a small-fry chandler like me to buy 1000 at a time. I do like that they don't afterglow as much as HTPs, and I like the wide range of sizes to fine tune the burn. If you can get beyond buying 1000 at a time, they are pretty economical, I just bought 1000 795s and with shipping they work out to ab $3.75 per 100. I have 300 to sell for those who need some 795s but only need a few, or if you want to try some out. Check out in the Classifieds for my post. Maybe if we get enough CTers using them, we could set up a co-op. geek
  18. So sorry to hear that! I am fearful of the same thing, so I started blending 415 with 402 to minimize any differences that may happen with different crops,or just differences between lots. I thought that SS's house brand soy was 415. Maybe I'm mistaken. I'm sure someone else here can let you know. Have you called SS on this yet? It seems that three wick sizes difference is pretty drastic a change. geek
  19. I can't keep anything in my garage, due to mice, so I keep my boxes of soy in the basement, under my table I have holding my Presto pots. It is a bit of a chore to lug then down, but I plan on only keeping 5 cases at a time, which is CStore's minimum for the price break. I then transfer a box into empty plastic cat litter totes I get from Sam's Club. They hold about 20 lbs each and seal up nice and tight. geek
  20. Just an observation, I have found that Butt Naked, specifically from MillCreek, smells like baby oil. geek
  21. Hi there, welcome! I was going to add some advice, but I see everybody else said what I woud have said. You will be challenged to do this and take care of your one month old crumb cruncher, so keep it simple. Test one FO in one jar, then move on to another FO. Don't allow yourself to get overwhelmed with too many testers going at once! And take lots of good notes! If you would like, after you get in a few more postes, you can PM me with your email address and I can send you a Word doc that will help you with testing. geek
  22. If you have a little time, check out this link. Make sure you aren't drinking anything or you may spray your monitor! http://www.candletech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10176&highlight=dipped+bears geek
  23. Can't add much about the cost of wax, since I use soy, but I wanted to say I like your site! How are Dot and Comma doing? geek
  24. Hello! I would normally at this time make a comment that noobs taste chicken but I wil not stoop to that level this time. Nosiree, not gonna do it. geek
