  1. I finally got around to pouring a few testers of 444 and 449. I really don't like the 449 at all. The color mottled and the surface texture was like the face of the moon. After burning it also got that white line where the bottom of the melt pool was. The 444 however was quite a different story. I did get a circular crack as some people have mentioned but that doesn't bother me since my current wax has to be tinkered with to get a smooth top too. The color looked good, didn't mottle or frost. I colored it dark green as that color does tend to mottle or frost a lot and it looked great. The other I left white as the wax when melted looked really yellow to me so I was concerned about that but it set up fine, didn't look yellow at all. I poured them around 160 degrees. Scented one with spicey apples & peaches and the other with cucumber mint, CD12 wick was too small so trying CD14 (9 oz hex jar). I don't do a final judge of scent throw until a week cure but they are smelling good already and it has only been a couple of days. Cold throw was good too. so far I'm impressed.
  2. Candlewic is a good place for the metal votive molds and pins. The prices vary quite a bit from company to company so be sure to price around. I've gotten quite a few off the classifieds also. I would definitely get wick pins as soy votives tend to crack and break if you mess with them too much. You may not want to buy too many molds at once until you find out if you enjoy votive making or not. good luck
  3. Duh, I totally put the wrong quote above my post there, It's late, I'm tired.santa eek
  4. I kept getting air pockets with a one pour. Now I fill until just before the cup starts to widen near the top, poke relief holes after about 20-30 mins and repour.
  5. I started with a walmart scale but eventually broke it. The old willknot scale I bought on Ebay is great, a few more bucks but worth it.
  6. I really like the V1. I get it at Just by Nature. I do a two-pour. HTH
  7. gotcha, thanks. BTW, their mountain lake didn't throw for me. Even though they test in soy, and other companies that test in soy, sometimes still get FOs that fall flat.
  8. I did read your post and I still wasn't clear if you had specifically tried that one before or I wouldn't have asked. I'm going to be trying this 449 wax and have been reading the reviews, so when you say it doesnt throw I was just trying to get more info. Have a nice day.
  9. Well do you normally use MC patch at 6%? or are you using unfamiliar oils to test wax?
  10. Really good company and products. Only complaint is they only ship UPS.
  11. I use naturewax V-1. Be sure to use UV inhibitor though, or they get dried out looking after a while.
  12. my tops actually usually look great; however, underneath there are pockets of air. I just a really large bamboo skewer and poke three good size holes into the candle around the wick. then heat gun until the pockets are filled up.
  13. I have never gotten this wax not to have airpockets or sinking. Someone on this board said they did, but in my experience there is usually an airpocket lurking under the surface. I poke and heatgun all my candles. I pour at about 160-170, don't heat jars unless they're really cold.
  14. I made some palm votives for Christmas gifts. I usually use soy votives and can wick them no problem. But these palm ones are giving me a headache. They seem to burn fine with a CD8 for a while, then they kind of crater and the flame is just marginal, not super small but not really doing much either. Any suggestions? The local supplier hear carries CDN, RRD, some Cottons. Any others I'd have to ship in and that would take a while. BTW, I tried zinc too, the flame went out. santa chee
  15. I totally agree, and customers don't know the difference between other manufacturer's candles and will turn around and use another candle that is NOT skin safe and hurt themselves. One more thing to put on the dang warning label.
  16. The magazine I saw that candle in specified that it burns out before it reaches the matches. I thought it was stupid, my husband thought it was really cool.
  17. Where to find good emu oil? I found it at a couple places and the prices were so very different I was kinda scratching my head, not sure if one was inferior or one just overpriced or what.santa chee
  18. I have mostly done candles but have recently been expanding my B&B stuff. I really like Majestic Mountain Sage, and occasionally order from Green Girl Basics and Elements Bath & Body. But still, once in a while there is something I want they don't have. I've checked FNWL but they seem pretty pricey on a lot of items. Since there are soooo many suppliers out there, thought I'd ask who you're favorites/suggestions are.
  19. I do it a little differently. When a good film forms on top I poke wide relief holes, then repour after they're pretty much set up, but not too long or I find the wax can pull away from the cup and then the repour makes a mess. The first pour is about 1/4 inch from the top, the second pour very full.
  20. Yes it makes a difference sometimes. Some scents won't have a hot throw in C3 no matter what you do. But do wait a week to cure to see.
