Grani L
I have a quick question - I have ordered just the basic oils to make soap. Are there any suggestions as to what kind of and where to get a nice purple color? Also where to get a nice lavender scent? I have smelled lavender, but I never liked any that I have smelled. I may need to blend something, but what ever help you can give I greatly appreciate. Thanks.
Candybee
For a nice lavender color I like to use Nurture's purple vibrance with a little TD. The best lavender FO I have found is from Pure Fragrance Oils. But it is pricey at about $30 per lb. Lately I have been trying out other lavenders but can't find one that compares. I also add lavender 40/42 EO to the FO. I also make my own lavender water from home grown lavender buds. I use the lavender water for my soap liquid. The combination of a good FO, EO, with lavender water makes the best smelling lavender soap IMO.
Guest OldGlory
I like lavandin EO in soap. It is usually less expensive than other lavender EOs and to my nose it's not as camphorous as the others. I have not found a lavender FO that compares. Also, you use less EO than FO in soap- maybe half as much, maybe less. Camden-Grey has pretty good prices on lavandin. Vernie1
I like Peak's Lavender Fragrance oil. You can order a sample to see if you like it.

Crafty1_AJ
Blue food coloring goes purple in a highly alkaline environment, such as cold process soap. Ask me how I know...
Candybee
I have a bunch of dried lavender buds. Can I use these to make lavender water? Absolutely. I use about 1 tbs of lavender buds. I kind of crush them a bit in the palm of my hand to get them to start releasing their scent. Then I put them in the distilled water I will be using to make my soap. I vigorously shake the bottle with the water and lavender buds and then let it set in the fridge overnight or for a day or two. The buds will turn the water a little grayish/bluish but it won't effect the color of the soap too much. Especially if you are using a colorant anyway. When I get ready to use the lavender water I just strain it to take out all the crushed lavender buds. It smells heavenly! If your recipe calls for 16oz of water use about 18-20 as some of the water gets soaked up in the lavender. So use a bit more water than needed to compensate for any water loss. I use the lavender water as my lye water. I prefer to make the lavender water a day or two ahead of time to give the buds a chance to 'brew' with the water and release as much lavender oil and scent as possible. Also, you can make some lavender water and put it in a spritzer bottle. A little spritz here and there around you home or on your pillow, sheets, makes your house smell nice without chemicals.
