icecold
Anyone know the difference? I got the food grade for my CP and realized there was a tech grade too from Essential Depot. Did I get the wrong kind?
Candybee
Food grade lye? Wonder what recipe calls for lye?!!! I think Betty Crocker would have a stroke!
IwantItgreen
You don't plan on eating your soap? No, you just paid more than you needed to. Tech grade is fine for CP. FYI: coconut oil in cp tastes really bad! lol

TallTayl
I usually buy food grade lye for CP. It is more pure than tech grade in which occasionally I see particles of unidentified things that I'd prefer not be in my product.Lye is used as a preparation in a number of common foods actually. Pretzels, canned oranges, green olives, and a number of Asian dishes. Anywhere the tough coatings or fibers need to be removed lye is a good chemical candidate. I've learned recently that some old timer farmers use weak lye solutions (a bit added to the water tank) to deworm livestock.

NNK
FYI: coconut oil in cp tastes really bad! lolTallow tastes a lot worse than coconut (in CP). lolI buy food grade from Essential Depot, for the same reason TallTayl does. Don't want any unidentified particles, plus I can advertize it as "made with food grade lye" !!!
leisa2003
Essential Depot is no longer going to carry the Tech grade lye, just the food grade. When you try to place it in the cart, you get a message about it.
Oceangazer1
I also buy the food grade from ED. I'm getting my palm and fo order today. They are having a sale on palm now that ends soon so get it while you can. I get my orders overnight because we are both in FL. Love that and love ED! soapbuddy
I get whichever one costs less since I buy 50 lbs. bags. I haven't noticed any difference.
Candybee
How do you tell which is which? I buy the Rooto brand at my local Ace Hardware. I have noticed foreign particles in at least one container of lye recently.
Flicker
Olives are also made using lye
ah-soy
If you read your toothpaste ingredients, it will likely be there. I think it would calm down some customers to know this when your trying to sell soap and they say "no way, if it's made with lye". Just have a toothpaste label there to show them what they've been brushing with:)
Chefmom
Hominy is made by processing the corn with lye. It actually frees up more nutrients for you to digest making corn a more nutritious grain.
