I actually have been reading this forum for several weeks now and finally joined a couple weeks ago and love all that I'm learning I wish I had known about this sight when I first obtained my candle stuff.I came about candle making about 7-8 months ago when I inherited(for a small price) a TON of candle making supplies from a co-worker & friend. Her daughter had a little business when she was in high-school about 5 or 6 years ago but was no longer doing it and dear mama wanted the stuff out of her garage. I gladly took it off her hands. I'm sure many of you long term board members know both mom & daughter as they were members here too. I didn't believe her when she said it all wouldn't fit in my small SUV and to bring my DH full size pickup. Sure enough, we filled the bed of the truck and some in the back seat!Anyway, I started out making votives because I thought they would be easiest and I wanted to sell them to raise money for the 3-Day for the cure walk I was doing. I KNOW, I KNOW! That's NOT the way I'm supposed to do it and I know that now that I'm on here :embarasse But I did get pretty good at it & I did test them first and put warning labels on them :smiley2: Only sold them to co-workers & friends of mine and DH. Since then I have been playing & trying different things. Probably too many different things! I'm now taking a step back focusing on my jars and to get that "perfect burn" as I'd eventually like to start my own business. Unfortunately from reading here, I inherited the hardest to wick jars. Libby cubes, & Tureens. Haven't TOTALLY given up on them yet but pretty darn close:(Ok, enough rambling! Now you know how I started and somewhat where I'm at. At least my friend is 95% sure that's what was in the tub she gave me, lol. I had like 45lbs of it so I'm using it for my learning wax.Nope, not an injured RN.......at least not yet, lol. I've really like using the 4630 wax, burns so well. I've been experimenting with the soy 135 (got it before I researched), and not too happy with how it looks, but I may try to mix it with other wax. I will be sticking with it for a while since I just bought a case of it while at Lone Star the other day. For me I've had nice smooth tops and pretty good jar adhesion. I was reading sooo many threads here and trying to figure out wicking, it's all I had on my mind. CandleAddict_RN Posted March 11, 2011 Author Share Posted March 11, 2011 Well, I got a sample pack of Eco's & HTP's because I was on the CS site and that's what they recommended for the 6006 wax. But I found that the eco's seem to smoke and soot a lot for me. I also have large quantities of, pretty much every size, CD & LX's that I got from my friend. I'm finally narrowing down on the small 7oz libby cube between the HTP & LX on a couple fragrances but I also have one curing with a CD in it. soy327 Posted March 11, 2011 Share Posted March 11, 2011 I use the 8oz taureen for wickless, but I got curious and thought I'd try to wick it (mind you with soy) and a CD12 worked well. I find the shallow jars need a bigger wick cause you don't have time to get the sides.With 6006 try a CD12 for grins. It just might be your wick. GeorgiaMoma Posted March 11, 2011 Share Posted March 11, 2011 (edited) I agree - get a wax you like and stay with it and a process you like --enjoy the opportunity to make something for others...for years I have 'practiced' making candles for the staff at a nursing home where my in laws were residents, I did not know that there was anticipation each year for the candles... I am now planning to start making candles and soaps to support a non profit I have started for dementia families. Anyone have any thoughts in this direction. I think I've read so many threads both on the 6006 & the jars I have & wicking that my brain feels like it's spinning, LOL. I've been trying to jot things down as I read good suggestions:) I actually went against everyone else's advice, before they posted it on this thread of course*hiding*, about sticking with a wax and took yours Steve and added 15% 464 to my 6006 :smiley2: They are curing now & will burn them early next week.
