If I were telling one of my students what was wrong I would tell them they need a couble form flowers pods or something larger for a focal point--then your design would take on a whole new form. Yoy might pull some of your berrys and grasses down abit so it isn't all sticking upward, But really for a fall design you had a very good start. I once asked someone that does the floral arrangements at the hobby store what is the right way to arrange some flowers I was holding. She said there is no right or wrong way unless your doing this professionally. It's a matter of being creative and pleasing yourself. I think what you did is lovely!!!
