I am so upset I don't know what to do .... I decided to try fragrances from The Chemistry Store since I had used their perfumer's alcohol in the past.... I ordered Mango Mandarin, Love Spell, Secret Crush, Japanese Cherry Blossom, Cherry Almond, Cucumber Cantaloupe, Fresh Lavender, Tahiti Sweetie and Passionate Kisses .. This was the worst experience ever .. with any fragrances. First of all the lavender and tahiti were backordered and not included in my shipment but i was charged for them. These were the worst fragrances ever !!!! the Mango Mandarin smells like Dill pickles and orange. The Japanese Cherry blossom is not remotely like BBW .. this stuff smells like burnt plastic .. seriously .. the cherry almond is nothing like jergens .. i was hoping at least one of the fragrances would be okay but I don't know what the problem is ... these are the weakest fragrances ever ... I couldnt even smell them out of the bottle... and when pouring you should also be able to smell something .. yet NOTHING .. the love spell is the worst there was oil but its like they forgot the fragrance ... the Love spell candle has no throw at all........ cold or hot i mean literally there is no smell .. I tested all of the candles and not one is acceptable .. i mixed the fragrance at 1 oz pp so now i have three cases of candles that i cant sell ... no one is gonna buy a candle that weak .. i wouldn't ... even when i used the oil in an oil in an oil burner ... there was minimal scent .. and the thing is i am on a disability income and i sell candles to make extra money .. now I have spent all of this money and have candles i cant do anything with .. i thought it was my nose but its not .. i smell everything else .. including clean cotton which is a soft fragrance .. The chemistry store has all of these elaborate and wonderful descriptions on thier site then when you get them it's like where is the scent i read about ? i dunno if that was a bad batch of oil but then again it couldn't have been because each and every fragrance was weak or not even detectable .. I am just so outdone ... I mean I am ANGRY .... that is a shame .. then of course they dont accept returns !!! i guess not because they know people would return that crap left and right .!!!!!

Sorry to hear about your experience with them, I just received an order today and I had an item on backorder, I need to see if I got charged for it. It was a soap mold, I hope I dont have ot pay shipping on a 1oz (weight) soap mold. I can only imagine how much that's going to be. When it comes to FO I only test from companies that have rave reviews (JS,Peak, NG) on this board.

I have used some of their oils and liked them alot. Their blue cotton candy is wonderful , the rasberry sorbet is very strong and accurate. I like the BBW Rich Citrus Cream also.

I use a paraffin/soy blend. And I also use 1 1/2 oz of oil per pound unless its a really strong kick butt type of oil.

Maybe you should remelt some of them and add more oil. Then wait a week or so and try burning them again.

My only problem with them is that they have moved out of florida and I used to be able to drive there and pick up my wax and stuff. I hate paying shipping!!

I use a blended wax ... the igi 6006 to be exact and for me I have never had a problem with getting a good throw hot or cold ... And to sherri i didnt pour cases of the same fragrance ... i made 6 of each fragrance and all of them range from weak to absolutely unscented !!!! there wasnt one strong or even moderate strength fragrance in the bunch ... I used one ounce pp, if i cant get a throw at that amount then i wont be using that fragrance ...I just chalked this up to a lesson learned .. I do however have some more fragrance. Since I only used only 1 oz pp which is 1/3 ounce per candle, I can melt them back down and use another 1 oz pp of fragrance I know will work!!!!! and it wont affect the burn. The wax i use can take up to 10% fragrance. 2 oz pp is 8.25% so i will be good ... I will change the mango mandarin to Lemon Meringue, i will change the cucumber cantaloupe to Honeydew, and I will change those scentless love spells to black cherry ... those are three powerful fragrances that I know will throw and I will be able to sell ... I know from now on .. to only use Peaks, Houston Candle Supply and Bittercreek south from now on !!!!!!!!!! I am not trying anything new !!!! and for my bath and body products and perfume I only use Wellington premium oils ... no one beats their designer fragrances not even wsp .... i got some cool water from wsp that smelled like irish spring ... everything from Wellington was DEAD ON .... romance, tresor, cool water, nautica, love spell, downy april fresh !! ... I tried peaks downy april fresh and it was strong but smelled HORRIBLE... it was nothing like april fresh ... it smelled like bitter weeds .. it was so dissimilar that I figured it had to be a mistake .... I didnt order any more to find out though ... I will stick with what works!!!! it amazes me how these people describe these scents as being similar and compared to other fragrances and they are nothing like the original i'm like what did you smell !!????

It is a shame you are having such problems, and I don't want to make them worse, but 2 oz pp isn't 10%. It is 12.5%. 16x12.5%=2. I would hate to see you overload on the fo and have it seep out on you. If your wax holds 10%, the most fo you use is 1.6 oz pp.

Reply TO SEP ..... my candles are 8 oz. It takes about a pound... a little more to make 3 ... with an 8 oz candle, 10 percent of 8 oz is .8oz. I used 1 oz for three 8 oz candles ... so that's 1/3 or .33 of an ounce in each candle. I can use up to .80 of an ounce for each one. So I could add up to 2.4 oz per 3 candles to equal 10 percent. So I still have room to add more fragrance with out a problem .. I have never had a problem with seeping when I use 10%, but thanks for your concern. Also in your calculation, you used the number 16 .. I assume you are using the measurement of 16 oz = a pound. That is true for water, however candle wax is not water so the same doesn't apply ... soy wax yields about 18 oz per pound and parrafin is 20 oz per pound ... so the calculations you used in an effort to correct mine, are wrong, but thank you kindly.

Yes, I was using the number 16 because there are 16 oz in a pound. Since ALL candle measurements are in weight (not volume) all percentages should be in weighed ounces. Where fragrance is concerned all suppliers sell by weight not volume, and some bottles of fragrance have less volume in them making it look like you are not getting what you paid for, when in fact they weigh a pound. Vanilla fo comes to mind. A one pound bottle of vanilla will have less volume in it than say a one pound bottle of say Cuc Melon.

Your calculations are mixed. You are confusing liquid volume with weight. One pound of water weighs exactly the same as one pound of wax. When you melt one pound (16 oz) of soy you get 18 liquid ounces, but the wax still weighs a pound.

I hope your problem comes out okay for you. I know things like this can be a real pain.

Sorry to hear about your fragrance problems. In regards to your measurements, SEP is right on with weight vs volume. 16 oz. of wax equals a pound even after melting it. Once you melt your wax, the volume is 18 oz., but the weight remains the same. Therefore, when figuring your fragrance load, the accurate way to measure it is by weight not volume, or you could end up with the oil seeping due to adding more than the wax can hold. In return, this could lead to your candle catching fire, which could then lead to someone's house burning down, which could lead to you being sued. No one wants to see that due to a miscalculation in the fragrance load. HTH

I am not trying anything new !!!!

Don't give up that quickly. The very first order I placed for fragrance oils was... scentit.com I think? Every single one of them was absolutely disgusting and of course I tried them all in wax, thinking that they would be better... nope. I was ready to swear off the hobby forever, but luckily I had ordered a couple FO's from Peak and they smelled great, and I found this board, got a few recommendations for suppliers, and have found all sorts of fantastic scents.

When you are considering a new supplier, just ask around and find out what everyone has to say about them. And I know everyone will tell you not to judge a fragrance out of the bottle, but I beg to differ... if it's really weak or nasty in the bottle, it's probably not going to be so great in wax either.

Hmmmm! If your wax holds a 10% fragrance load then, for your 3 candles you are using too little fo. 1.6 oz per pound of wax (which is 20 oz liquid wax) Therefore I use 8 oz per pouring pot + about 2 inches more, which is 112 oz. This makes 6-7 pint jars or 12-14 8 oz. jars. This includes top off.

If I follow the calculation based on weight for the same amount, I'm fragrance loading at 12% which is still fine for my wax 4627 so 1.92 oz per lb????

  • 2 weeks later...

I decided to just scrap the whole batch .... I was able to salvage a few but for the most part I put them in the oven .. melted the wax and poured it out .. I can still use my jars. I finally got the rest of my shipment 2 weeks later that was out of stock from the chemistry store. They were Fresh Lavender and Tahiti Sweetie. The Lavender smelled good in the bottle but I used it in an oil burner with a little water and it smelled like roach spray. The tahitie sweetie smelled like sex on the beach ... they were stronger than the rest of the oils so that makes me think that the rest of the oils were old and had lost strength but these oils which they had to reorder were fresh and therefore were stronger. It's a shame that fragrance oils are non returnable ... because in essence they could put wesson oil in a bottle and sell it to you and what could you do about it ? I really wish you guys could have smelled the love spell I got ... there was absolutely no scent and everyone i let smell it couldnt detect a scent either so I know it wasnt candle nose.... I will never use their company for anything else though ... Lesson Learned BTW Peaks has the best Lavender I have ever ever ever ever ever smelled in my life !!!!!! and I love Lavender so I know the dofference between the Weedy smelling Lavender and the fresh out of the shower lavender smell and peaks has it ! Their amish harvest is wonderful also ...

Then why did you even buy another lavender?

Paragraphs would help immensely. Very hard to read your posts
