Courtney Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 I use 464 soy and I just switched from tins to mason jars. I'm getting super huge sink holes in them. All of them. I haven't done anything different. Maybe I should? I pour at about 135 and it always gave me a nice smooth finish in the tins. I don't know what to do to fix it. Quote
TallTayl Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 If by “sink holes” you mean the dip in the middle around the wick, It has to do with the mass / volume difference. The shrinkage of the amount poured into the tin is less noticeable and the cooling rate is quicker so less visible shrink. The mason jar is taller, the glass holds more heat, so the middle takes a lot longer to cool. Wax shrinks as it cools, with the middle shrinking last. The top has no choice but to settle downward. If by sinkhols you mean cavities under the surface, that’s a different thing, but also related to shrink. Quote
runner14jc Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 @Courtney Try adjusting your pouring temperature. I usually need to pour a bit warmer in glass than I do in tins with the 464 wax. Quote
Trappeur Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 Yes, try pouring warmer. I use 464 and pour at 149 give or take for a real nice looking top. Trappeur 1 Quote
Courtney Posted July 27, 2018 Author Posted July 27, 2018 Thank you. Pouring at a higher temperature fixed it. 1 Quote
