    What other option is there besides using a wick tab? I don't like the looks of a wick tab exposed at the bottom of a pillar (looks unfinished, but that is only my opinion). There are many candle makers besides myself that make pillars this way. As well as quite a few "major mass manufactured" candle companies out there. Been making candles since 1999 and haven't had a problem yet. That's not to say that I won't, but I don't lose sleep over it.

    Yes you would have to take great care, especially if you let the candle cool completely. Love the clean bottom of a pillar. To me it looks unfinished if you leave the wick exposed (don't mean to offend those that do leave their wicks exposed, just my little ole opinion).

    Never has. I only have had to do 2 pours. The first one gets filled all the way to the top of the mold and when the wax shrinks the sides stay high up and the middle is what gets lower. Thus when it comes time for the second pour, the wax fills in the relief holes and the crater in the middle. This is what works for me.

    When my pillar is ready for the second pour, I take my wick off of the wick holder and trim it down below the mold. Then I heat up my wax for my repour and "overfill" the mold. This will actually bring the level of the candle a tad bit above the mold. Once the wax is cooled down, but while still a little bit warm I take a large kitchen knife (sacrificed to candlemaking) and slice off the wax that is above the mold and use the mold as a leveler and guide. There you have it. A pillar leveling job that will be perfect everytime and your wick is no longer exposed. Hope this makes sense.

    At the risk of sounding like everyone else, they are too pretty to burn. <G> I am currently using sawdust, but not the thin, small sawdust that you can get free from Lowe's or Home Depot. I use the wood chips that you get when you cut trees with a chainsaw. I find that they light faster and burn longer than regular sawdust. I tried using the paper cups, but found that the paper absorbed the wax too much and it was hard to get the paper to light.
