  3. Ooooh, I've heard great things about African Black Soap - I really want to try some, but I'm not sure what to do with it Is it ready to use when you buy it?
  4. I've got that - FNWL carries it for about the same price. That sheepy smell is kind of gross huh? lol Here's what I'm looking for, only in bulk http://www.herbalremedies.com/liqlan100pur.html Its 100% pure lanolin, but liquid The reason? So I can scent with EO's when I use it to lanolize woolens...to cover that sheepy smell
  5. I know it exists, I've seen it commercially. Does anyone know where I can buy lanolin oil in bulk?
  6. I'm not sure potassium hydroxide is...although, I think one method (cold process) is more than enough for me to learn right now lol Thanks for the tips everyone. I'm going to try the castile soap with the standard amount of water. I'm going to infuse the olive oil with herbs though...I'm ordering calendula, plaintain, burdock, chickweed, and marshmallow root Not sure which combo I'll use though. Olive oil works great for infusions right?
  7. Hmm, clarity doesn't really matter much....I guess where I'm stuck is the only instructions I've seen for liquid soap, is to shave soap, melt with added water - and with that I'd have to add germaben or something (right?). I will give olive oil a try It sounds like it would be perfect for what I'm trying to achieve. Any suggestions on figuring the extra water? For now I just use the soapcalc.com calculator... Would I need to figure a specific amount or could I just add whatever works? In addition to this, I'm also trying to create a wool wash bar and possibly liquid lanolin I'm having fun (even if my first batch may be a flop lol).
  8. or did you mean a liquid soap to squirt into a bottle of water as opposed to a tiny piece of bar soap? That probably would be easier....if you have suggestions on how to go about that I'd love to hear it!
  9. It would be easier, but then you really have to worry about that water growing bacteria. It would be ideal if a person could mix up only enough to last a day so the water (distilled) is changed very often. And I don't want to use preservatives because I wouldn't feel comfortable spraying those chemicals right on the goods, yk? I'm trying to develop a very natural, hopefully organic (or as near as possible), line
  10. Well...I guess I should explain what the soap is for - but nobody can call me crazy, ok? I want to make a cloth wipe concentrate. Little tiny pieces of soap will be added to a cup or so of water as needed, to use as a wipe solution for cloth wipes/cloth diapers. I wanted to make a castille soap because its so gentle, but olive would make a hard bar, right? I need something that would dissolve with a few minutes of vigorous shaking, and be gentle enough for a baby's bottom. But because of common nut allergies, I need to stay away from nut oils like almond, walnut, etc (exotic nuts aren't a big deal though...). I've been reading and reading about all the different properties of oils, and I'm learning a lot. But to start testing formulas, I don't want to end up with all the wrong oils ok ok, you can call me crazy...but only if you give a good tip too
  11. Which oils make a VERY soft bar of soap? So soft that it would dissolve really fast in water? But it would still have to be hard enough to cut and keep its form Thanks for putting up with all my weird questions lol I'm going to be ordering some supplies soon so I just need a general direction in what to look for, yk?
  12. Thanks! There's definately some good prices there!
  13. Where can I get babassu? I've read that name somewhere and wanted to check it out..but have no clue who carries
  14. Thanks! I'll give palm (as well as different butters...already using olive) a try, as I want to steer clear of animal products (thats what the lard is right? meat derived?) I'll also pick up some stearic
  15. What are some fats that make a VERY hard bar? Preferably fats that are very stable. Thanks!
  16. Thanks for the info! So adding the extra fat after the "cooking" is only ok for HP? The reason I want to add the lanolin after so that its unchanged, is this soap is going to be for washing wool. Some of that lanolin needs to remain on the wool to keep it conditioned and waterproof Any ideas for doing that?
  17. I've got all my equipment..I think - stainless steel bowls, all kinds of spoons (plastic, stainless steel, wooden), plastic rubbermaid pitcher to mix lye, 16 cup glass pyrex bowl, glass measuring cups, cardboard box and heavy plastic sheeting to line it, gloves and goggles, thermometer, stick blender, scale measuring tenths... I've got oils (olive, safflower, walnut, canola, sweet almond, a tiny bit of castor), jojoba, lanolin, shea and cocoa butters, crisco and some EOs (sweet orange, lavender, sandalwood, tea tree). Am I set? lol. I'm not sure which recipe I'm going to use, but I've been playing around with this calculator. Any recipe suggestions or oil combos of what I have? Right now I just want to try something fairly basic to try out the cp process (never made soap by any process though). Eventually, I want to make a REALLY hard bar of soap, superfatted (I read I can add extra fat after most of the fats have reacted with the lye?) with lanolin... My reason for it is it won't be a soap for washing bodies Its to wash woolens so that extra bit of lanolin needs to be there, in its original form, to keep the wool conditioned. Any suggestions for a newbie are appreciated
  18. Hey everyone Wow, its been a long time since I have been to this forum, I had to re-register and everything I was/am a candle maker, not so much a soap maker. But there is a soap product I really want to try and I'm going to need some help lol Anyone use Eucalan? I want to make that, basically. Or just a very gentle no-rinse wool wash - I'm thinking castile soap, EO's, lanolin of course...but any suggestions on how to keep the lanolin liquid and dispersed? I've seen a couple homemade wool wash recipes and they called for alcohol, but I'd like to avoid that if possible Thanks! I also really want to try making bar soap, I believe it would be called superfatted? I want the lanolin to be added towards the end so its pretty much unchanged I really appreciate any suggestions!
