  1. Ditto what Henry said. I like the repour lines...since you have a set, they look like borders. All my candles used to have that border till I learned to pour to the top of the mold. It's ok if it sinks in the middle..you just fill it in w/the second pour.
  2. I've also seen the relief holes thru the melt pool - didn't look all that great but didn't cause any problems w/the burn.
  3. Anna, were all these dark colored candles? I've heard that darker colors can clog the wicks and I have to say that I have had trouble with the darker ones I've made. They burn good about half way, then start stalling out. I read at one supplier's website(can't remember who) that you should strain dark colored wax thru coffee filters to remove undissolved pigment....just something else for the 'to test' list I think we can safely add Patchouli & Dragon's Blood to the 'hard to wick' list.
  4. this is a terrific thread -- going to print it out for my notebook.
  5. Ditto Anna, I heard that Sandlewood was hard to wick & couldn't get much info so here's what I did: Wax: 1343A 3 tablespoons Stearic pp 1 oz FO pp color light brown made a small 2x3 candle to test the FO since I hadn't used it before. Started with a LX16 - too big, wicked down to LX14, still too big, wicked down to LX12 --- perfect burn. Burned this baby for 5 straight hrs and it was just barely starting to bulge. (I'm new to using the LX wicks & didn't have a clue where to start) I have a hard time wicking 2" candles but this time it is a winner.:highfive: Also poured a 3x6 w/same mixture - haven't lit it yet - will report back when I do.
  6. they are little tarts with a wick. Very small.
  7. Gosh, Donita, why don't you have a generator???? Xmas is just around the corner, ya know. ;) ;)
  8. If you're talking about the new one with the funny metal wick thingy -- it's ok but the replacement tarts run about a buck each --- it burned for just under 2 hrs, and the throw WAS NOT that great, the glass container is large thus creating a large melt pool . It has a nice flame that is consistant throughout the burn but to we candlemakers -- ain't worth the money. I used the wick thingy several times by setting it in my fluted tart molds and pouring my own - burned better, lasted longer and of course it smelled better. Got bored with it after a few days & just use it for a pillar holder -- it has a raised bottom so to make the pillar set straight, I did not fill in the well in the candle so it would set down over the bump.
  9. many of the pre-tabbed wicks are 6" - for that reason I like the 3x6. And ditto what Ducky says about the extra .5" on the 3x4 vs 3x4.5. I don't really care for the taller candles like 9 inchers.
  10. Had a beautiful black cherry color in the pot - looked great as I was pouring and after pulling it from the mold it this color --> . Used 1343 & added the vybar to hold a little more FO. I know it's supposed to give a creamy effect but wasn't expecting that much of a lighter color. I usually use stearic but didn't want any mottling on this candle. Any way I can get the black cherry color back? Remelt & add more black? Edit: Opps - wrong forum
  11. Henry, should have mentioned that I do prime the wicks first but even when primed sometimes they still want to snag along the way. Just completed 3 1/2hr test burn of 3x3 hot cocoa(1/2tbl vybar, 1 oz FO, LX 30) - - 1/8" wall, perfect burn. Hopefully the 2nd burn will do as well. there was an ever-so-slight bend but just at the tip of the wick and a little mushrooming but no biggie!
  12. I planned on going fairly dark with the hot cocoa - more of a deep chocolate so I think I'll save time and to straight to the 30 for my 1st test. There have been several members that like these wicks so I figured I might as will give them a try. Pouring Sweet Pea right now.....house sure smells good
  13. Fern: do you have to wick up even more for darker colors and heavier FO?
  14. hey thanks - as a Newbie I can use all the info I can get.
  15. Yep, I got some 21's. they sent everything from 8s to 30s.(13 packs) so I can just wick my little heart out. I like a nice big flame but then I'm a pyro...ya' know. Will be making Hot Cocoa (rustic w/vybar - don't want mottling) & Asian Sandlewood (tilted layer rustic w/stearic as mottle is ok on this one), Black Cherry Bomb & a Vanilla(haven't decided on the style yet). All 3x6". I too have started making my testers 3x3s. And yes, I'll be using pins - When using flat braid wicks, I found that if I unmold the candle then the slip it back on the wick pin, I can feed the wicks down the hole while slowly lifting the candle off the pin, the wicks go straight thru w/o hanging up. One time I had a dark colored candle that I couldn't get wicked properly to save my life so I took 3 24 plys, braided them together, and the candle totally self consumed down to last 1 1/2" w/o any hugging. The wick looked kinda funky but performed beautifully.
  16. Just received some w/my Peak order. I've never made anything w/sandlewood and just wondering if it is going to be one of those PITA scents when it comes to wicking. Any tips before I start?
  17. just received an order of LX wick samples packet from Peaks. I plan on doing some serious pillar pouring over the next couple of days with 1343A - have any of you used these wicks with this wax? Do they curl? Any sharing will be appreciated.
  18. Aroma Haven/Rustic Escentials has one called Just Peachy -- smells just like fresh peaches and has a good throw.
  19. I'll be pouring Hot Cocoa. Made a couple for friends at work, took them in last nite and neither of the girls were there so they just sat on my desk for a couple of hours.....bet you can guess where this is going...the scent drifted all over the place and I got orders for 8 of 'em:yay: This scent literally sells itself PS: love the new smilies
  20. a few drops doesn't work for me so I pour a small amt into a glass votive holder. After it has dried, I zap it w/heat gun & put it back in the pot.
  21. I thought I was the only one who made with dog-hair candles:shocked2:
  22. I used one for months then discovered it was registering 9 pts higher than the candy therom. But it was a very old before I started using it ..now I use that top rounded part to tamp the wax down in the molds when I make whipped candles.
  23. I bought a 3x3 at local candle factory last week & the wick lifted right out -- didn't have a tab - it was just pushed in there - hit it w/heat gun to secure it.
  24. could it also include notes on wicking that particular fragrance?? like..it's a PITA:( I've been wishing there was a wick section but since wicks, FO & waxes are so intertwined didn't know if it would help.
