  1. well, you've inspired me to give the black & white a try...been procrastinating cause of the bleed issue. Your son is very deserving of those beautiful candles. Besides mastering the black & white technique, your parenting skills are obviously top-notch also.
  2. cybersix: maybe you could set the candles in a box or something & wrap them w/towel to keep the chill of the nite air off of them...might be cheaper than raising the thermostat.
  3. thanks Chris, I really thought I'd lost it....but considering how much FO I've inhaled recently I could be a little dingy.
  4. Not just man's point of view Tucker .... I like 'em the best too.
  5. should take aprox 2 hrs (1 inch per hr) maybe you should wick down?
  6. haven't seen that before but it looks like fun. But I think I'd slide the balls of wax onto a wick pin and save the effort of drilling.
  7. I know what you mean Chris. After I started making candles, I went to the local candle factory & bought a couple just to see if my throw was up to par. Was thrilled to discover that my throw trailed thru the house better than the '''professional''' ones. Just a note on burning candles in the basement: the scent will automatically rise. A friend has a tri-level house, burns the votives I make for her on the kitchen counter on the 2nd level and the scent fills the upper level of the house beautifully. If she burns the votives on the upper level, it's hard to smell them.
  8. Benna. to test my colors, I put about 1/2 teaspoon of the mixture in a tart mold. It sets up almost instantly.
  9. if you're shopping at Joann's try the Yaley's premium wax - comes in 11 lbs slabs, 4 lbs & 1 lb blocks. It has a melt point of 148*. For this wax I usually use the Yaley's extra-large wire wick for 3" candles(in the little packages) - And watch your local paper for JoAnn's 40 & 50% coupons - it's the only way to buy these products locally without choking. Michael's carries the same stuff at the same prices. BTW: you didn't mention the size of the molds you are using. It would help.
  10. if there is too much FO, the outside of the candle will be slippery & the candle will actually sweat beads of FO
  11. I think it looks like cucumber seeds on top:grin2:
  12. Chris, I think that's called draped not wiggles. I've made a few of these and every other one sticks & some of the layers fall off but I'll keep practicing till I get it right. If you re-wick it upside down, you'll see the beauty of the drapes. Edited: boy I mis-read something somewhere -- you did say drapped -- guess I just looked at too many pic tonite.
  13. that's a great looking brown you've got there....melt in the mouth color:grin2:
  14. I never and a whole 'drop' of black to anything -- it always goes too dark. The toothpick method works best for me..at touch at a time till I get the color I want.
  15. I have the same problem where the mold is too warm from the previous pour to get the rustic .. just before I pour the next layer I rub an ice cube on the outside of the mold to cool the area.
  16. I think 1 drop for 1-2 oz is a lot. I usually start w/1 drop per pound and work up from there.
  17. I see the article hit a sore spot with more than just me. After all the feedback they got from we Chandlers, I'll have to keep an eye out for a follow up article. I think I'll start putting the warning labels on the side of the candle (or maybe on the top) instead of the bottom...not that it will do any good but it will be harder to ignore.
  18. Maybe try clear wax w/a little vybar?? or clear w/a bunch of mottling oil?? Just a thought.
  19. The article included a long list of safety guide lines that didn't show up on the link but they were the normal ones that we are so familiar with, i.e., don't leave a candle unattended, keep away from kids, etc. I agree that the article failed to emphasize that the responsiblity for candle safety lies with the user. I'm getting P****d just thinking about it. There is a link at the bottom of the article to send opinions...think I'll do that while I'm in a fighting mood
  20. TartAddict: You could get tiles to match the candles. A rustic would look great setting on a torentine(sp) tile or match a marble candle to a marbled tile. You may get some great inspiration from the tiles
  21. The front page of our local paper today had a story on candle fires. Here's a link to the article if anyone would like to read it. http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/news/articles/1107candles07.html
  22. you could pick up some really pretty tiles at Home Depot or Lowes - they come in various sizes & styles. Edit: Ducky: great minds think alike, huh?
