  1. That would depend on the size of wick you're planning on using. Triple I think would burn more evenly all the way around, so you would want a smaller wick. What kinds of wicks are you using? Mama
  2. I just blend 100% soy with about 1% beeswax. It helps with frosting, burns more evenly, smooth tops and great throw. I've never bought a "pre-blended" soy, so I guess I don't have anything to compare my blend to.
  3. I have made straight beeswax candles before and the wax I used had a pretty strong natural honey aroma. I found that when I added fo the natural fragrance of the bees wax interfered with the smell of the fo. I just use a small amount of bees wax in my soy candles now. People who like straight bees wax candles tend to like them natural BECAUSE of the smell of honey. I found they didn't want fo added. Good luck! mama
  4. I started off making candles with EO's and finally gave up. I have heard from MANY different sources that EO's just don't do well in candles. I have switched to FO's because most of my customers like a very strongly scented candle. I read that the essential oils "bind" to the wax and that the fragrance doesn't release. That's why it has a cold throw but doesn't throw while burning. I have also read that EO's aren't true oils and that's another reason they may not throw well when burned. They basically "evaporate" before the scent can be released. I'm sure someone out there has come up with a formulation that works, but I never could. Good luck! Mama
  5. I have been making soy candles for about 3 years and the best wicks that work for me are HTP wicks. I started out using zinc but they fizzle out after a while. HTP give me a perferct burn pool and rarely, however sometimes, mushroom! Mama
  6. I got my palm wax from a local supplier and mine look snowy white without adding anything, as well. I think they are prettier than any other candle with color! Mama
  7. I use HTP wicks in my soy candles. If the jars are the ones I'm thinking of the diameter is about 4", right? Go with a HTP 1212 or HTP 1312. The latter burns a little hotter however and needs to be blown out more often and trimmed, but it does create a better melt pool. Mama
  8. Did you let the candle cure for a couple of days before lighting it? Also, using about 1% beeswax in with the soy seems to help with the throw. Also, cuts back on frosting and makes it a little harder. Mama
  9. I have never used any additives in my soy pillars. And although you don't want to add any other waxes, I must say, using beeswax is a HUGE advantage or using Palm wax is another option. The make the soy a little harder and cut WAY back on the frosting. Of the two, I prefer bees wax. Hope this helps. Mama
  10. What's Indiana Candle Supplys website? I CAN'T FIND IT!!!!!!! You guys got me all excited! mama
  11. I have always used about 1% beeswax in my soy candles. I recently stopped using the beeswax and have been making straight soy candles and let me tell you, what a difference!!! I am definately going BACK to adding the beeswax. There is much less frosting, the tops are smooth and the color is better. Also, they seem to burn just a bit longer. I bought 2 presto pots on e-bay with the spouts already on them. I use the spout ALL THE TIME and have the presto pot is great because you can regulate the temp. of the wax. I keep wax on low all the time and when I'm ready to make candles I don't have to wait forever for it to melt! Mama
  12. I put some brown or orange in with the red. Little by little. Black always makes my red just a darker pink! Mama
  13. I get my jars from The jar store. Some people don't care for them because when you call to inquire about the jars you get the MAJOR sales pitch, but they are cheap and have done well for me for the past couple of years. I will probably be switching over to Anchor-Hocking when I run out though so that I can support an American Co., rather than China. Mama
  14. Not a lot of luck over here using pure essential oils, however, I do blend EO's and FO's and have had great luck. EO's aren't really oily like FO's and I think a lot of them just evaporate before they have a chance to release their scent. Like a previous post, some work better than others. Mama
  15. I just use frosted glass!!! Problem pretty much solved! Plus my customers love the look of the frosted glass! Mama:p
  16. I buy Cabernet Sauvignon from NG and it sells out IMMEDIATELLY!!! As for the Citrus and Teakwood, I really like it myself but it's not as popular here as I expected so I've been trying to sell my 8 oz. in classified to no avail. Mama
  17. Thanks so much for all the input! I tried ordering from soycandle.com but unfortunately the shipping was going to be $185.00!!!!!! For 2 cases! At least know I know more about the wax though! Thanks!!!! Mama
  18. I always used a square braid cotton wick that you can buy by the yard or in spools. They were raw and worked fine for me but some say you need to treat them with wax before you use them if not already treated. As far as the size goes, that would depend on the diameter of the candle and most websites state what diameter the wick is recommended for. Be warned, soy pillars are tricky! Mama
  19. I do the same as Motherofalltrades! The jars end up costing me more than a dollar after shipping and so I don't end up loosing any money and people love the fact that I'm recycling the jars! Never had a problem and have been offering the "recyling program" for 2 years! Mama;)
  20. I don't know where your located but candlewic.com had it on sale the other day for $3.00/lb. These are the white pastilles too! Mama:drool:
  21. Any opinions on Golden Wax? I know it's a totally different subject but when I went to this website, I noticed that they sell Golden Wax. I've only used EcoSoya and want to know the difference? Mama:embarasse
  22. Anyone out there ever use Golden Wax 415 from soycandlewax.com? I have always used EcoSoya and had no problems but my supplier jacked the price up so much that I need a new alternative. This place sells a case of this stuff for 1/2 of what I usually pay, so I'm suspicious! Any input? Mama:embarasse
  23. Cierra candles also has a coffee liquid dye. Mama
  24. I bought a cheap used oven just for candle making! It was $100.00 but I have seen some people practically giving them away just to get rid of them! Mama;)
  25. I tried soy tapers and palm tapers and ended up with a pool of wax on my table cloth every time. I think they just can't stand up to the heat. Hope you have better luck than I did. Mama:tiptoe:
