  1. No, I usually only burn for 20 minutes at a time. Can I add stearic acid to Ez Soy to slow burn time? I did not think it it could be added, but a mercahnt at a candle company said it could. Not wanting to mention names... Thanks
  2. I burned the candles more than 4 times. I can admit the wicks were not dead centered either. I just ordered some wick bars from CandleScience to help with centering the wicks. The tin's diameter is 3 inches. Thanks for the advice!
  3. As a hobbiest, I bought a soy container kit; I have made a few testers and when I burn them they are not burning evenly. I am left with a sliver of a moon shape of wax around one half of the container: Blurry pic, but see the 1/2 moon?? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v385/jenigma/Photo53-1.jpg Another I made has what it seems is 2 melt pools and looks nothing like a real candle, maybe I need to wick up for that one. Here is a pic and the container is 1 pint- I used an eco 8: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v385/jenigma/Photo54-1.jpg If this is a cure time issue, then I am a violator. Otherwise, what could cause this? I use EZ Soy and 1-1.5 oz of fo I am using eco 8 wicks and 8 oz jelly jars, except for the pint which is a tin They looked so pretty before the test burn too: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v385/jenigma/Photo45-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v385/jenigma/Photo31.jpg Thanks, ~June
  4. Wow I was worried about the opposite happening- good news for me then! What again are the other benefits of adding the beeswax? I have about 7.5 lbs of EZ Soy flakes left to use. Thanks, June
  5. Greetings from one newbie to another; I am making container candles: I am using EZ Soy now. I like it because it is 1 pour, and the hot and cold throws are amazing. They say cure time is 2 weeks, but, I have burned my test candles the next day and they do fine. If I were a business it would maybe be different? I am a hobbiest for now, so I am not sure about cure time differences. I have to do the following to make sure the soy wax works for me: Add soy friendly dye at 175 F; I use the redding diamond chip Add 1-1.5 oz of FO for each pound of wax at 185 F; Take off heat ASAP and stir like crazy Make sure FO is friendly to the EZ Soy Let wax cool to right before slushy- 95-98 degrees F I find if I pour at slushy I get spots and uneven cure I had frosting issues with my first 2 candles, but no more. I am considering adding beeswax to the soy, but I have not yet. Hope this helps- June~
  6. I use dog nail trimmers, advice I found under Newbie section.
  7. My 42 YO Hubby likes Reload, and he is like a kid still snowboards surfs motobikes etc...FWIW
  8. Can the FO's be intermixed by different suppliers? I want to buy some Fo's from X supply and have some Fo's from Y supply... I may want to mix them to get a new scent! I have a cosmetology license, and know that mixing hair colour is a no no unless it is with the same formula; not sure if this is different or not with candle FO's.. And, speaking of haircolour, is the whole color wheel thing the same? Yellows cancel Purples etc? It seems like it would be universal to me, color is color.
  9. Hi all, I have done alot of searches, and I have a few noob questions- I am a noob, I wanted to know if a tin can has to be special for pouring soy wax into. I will be pouring at 95 degrees F. I bought a pint sized tin with a lid; it was at one time for Sheer Bliss Vanilla Ice Cream, at the thrift store for .50 cents, and I want to mix dye chips, maybe 1/2 ivory and 1/2 yellow dye and add cream brulee FO to it and pour the wax into the tin... The tin has 1 seam which overlaps, and a lid. The wick would be an eco 8... The eco 8's came with 12 8 oz jelly jars in the kit, which I personally think are not at all attractive. I am searching on what to buy next, more FO's, some nicer jars, and some smelly jelly supplies maybe, are smelly jellies worth making? I have 100 bucks to spend, and have been researching certain suppliers like mad, trying to figure it all out! This is just a hobby for me, I have found it to be very theraputic after working two jobs (one job pays for the supplies!) Thanks for any advice in advance.
  10. I am new here but I found the scent forum via the newbie page and it narrowed down top scents by supplier to Just Scents- I studied it all day today...Well, maybe it was more about the scents, but they recieved high scores. The more reviews the more clear the scores are. I read alot of reviews all day long, and was really surprised how much info I gathered! I encourage people here to leave reviews there, I would, but I am too new to this to know if BCN's Cream Brulee is comprable to another supplier's FO. I am a hobbyist. BCN is where I got started, and I like 3 of 5 of the scents I got. But I am wanting to try Just Scents now, they sound like a really great company, if I can figure what scents to order! My BCN faves that I got are: Cream Brulee Country Berry Hotcakes Verbana Berry when mixed with Cream Brulee otherwise; too clean bathroomy for me. Everyone has different scent tastes and everyone smells differently, important to keep in mind! I took a test candle to work for cold throw test, someone smelled pineapple and others smelled vanilla... BCN scents I did not like: Hayride Basil Sage Mint They were too blah for me, I am into food smells- LOL! I do not like strong perfumy scents, but like oven kitchen smells better; to each their own! Happy sniffies!
  11. I was just going to post a new thread about this until I found this thread... I am a noob, and have all but 1 week into ez soy candlemaking, 10 candles and 5 scents to mix and match. I have a question about suppliers saying, "It's here" or "we finally got it" in terms of wax or certain FO's...we are on the subject of FO's here so... So who are they getting it from? If it is not an excclusive line of their products? My reason asking said above is: if Natures Candles has a Cream Brulee FO, and so does BCN, whih is better??? How does one tell? Scent reviews are ok, but this forum IMO should have one due to it's population. However, I do realize certain sponsers make not want to do that... So, on to my noob FO review: edited to mean Natures Garden. I got with my kit the following 5 FO's from BCN: Listed in order of my scent preference: Also a noob description of the interpretion of the scents OOB: Cream Brulee Vanilla Country Berry Hotcakes Blueberry pancakes Verbana Berry Smells like a cleam bathroom Hayride Smells like mans cologne Basil Sage Mint mens cologne or soap So, a noob review OOB... Thanks for any feedback, I am getting ready to order some more FO's and am unsure of which supplier to go with. I read somewhere that Natures Candles were high end, but, again I am a noob, so....
  12. I am new, and ordered an ez soy starter kit from BCN. I got the package and 5 FO's were included... Here are the Fo's in my favorite order: Cream Brulee Country Berry Hotcakes Verbana Berry Hayride Basil Sage Mint The Basil sage mint smelled like mens fragrances, as did the Hayride scent. Who knows if the name was the actual scent, but the other 3 were pretty accurate!
  13. Thanks for the heads up on a delightful new scent!! I am a noob as well and new scents and suppliers always come to mind!!
  14. I love those!!! I cannot wait to graduate to candles like that!
  15. Well, I made 2 so burning 1 will be ok then! Thanks for the tip Chickie 1st!!
  16. Well, I just made my first test candle. The longest part was waiting for the wax to cool to 98 degrees. Do I really have to wait 2 weeks to burn it? EZ Soy... It smells really good!!
  17. Hi, I just got my shipped order for an EZ Soy kit from BCN. At this point it is a hobby, I work full time and part time, but I have alot of free time at work to read and learn! And I am off of work for 4 days, and hoping to make a test candle in this time, but, there is no hurry, as these are for my home... I have been reading alot here and at BCN and Candle Caudron websites, bookmarked ALOT of info, and before I begin my first test candle, I wanted to see if I should be concerned with the following: Do I need a scale? I have 10 lbs of EZ soy flakes. I am estimating I need about 1.5 cups at the most to make an 8 oz candle in a jelly jar. 1. The instructions are not real clear on how much of the EZ soy wax flakes to melt for an 8 oz jelly jar. BTW, I do not own a scale- is there a way to use a pirex to measure? Is a scale really necessary? 2. Wicks that came in the kit are Eco 8 Pre-tabbed 6" Veggie Wicks, which will be poured in 8 oz jelly jars. I have heard 2 different ways to wick EZ soy: the correct sounding way to me is to glue it into the bottom of the jelly jars and hold straight with a clothespin...again no instructions were given. The other way was to add the wick after the slushy pour; sounds incorrect but correct me if I am wrong!! I assume these wicks are the correct size since I ordered a starter kit...??? any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated. 3. Should I hold off and buy some beeswax or another additive to compliment the finished candle. I have been doing some reading and I understand that adding certain amounts of Beeswax or other additives can help offset some of the EZ Soy's problems... Thanks in advance. I want to be proficient before I start, just trying to nail down some of these unknowns.
  18. Hi everyone, my 1st post here, I am expecting my BCN EZ Soy kit to arrive this week. I contemplated buying extra FO's but decided to hold off. I did read somewhere, someone spent 8K before going Pro... Happy and safe Candlemaking! Junebug~
