icon1.png How do you make handsoap?

I posted this in the soap section but got no responses so I thought I would try here if you all don't mind? If so I do apologize! Hi! I am 100% new to this. Lol! I make candles and have never tried any kind of soap. My question is can anyone tell me how to make hand soap and also foamy hand soap? I would like to scent it and maybe color it also if I can. I have tons of scents.

I guess my next question would be is, can you use candle scents or essential oils, and also candle colors in hand soap? I think it would be fun to make and a neat thing to have for gifts along with candles to friends and family. I really wouldn't expect to sell it! I just think it would be a new and fun thing to do.

Anyway any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

I don't know anything about it, but use the search feature up in the right hand corner. You should get at least 5 pages of info. I don't believe anyone on this forum cares whether you end up selling or not. They're still willing to help. They're a great group of info sharing people. The ones that can answer your question are probably busy with the upcoming season. HTH

Thanks for your info. I did try the search on the soap board but no responses. You may be right. They may all be busy. As far as helping, you are right. I love this board. I use it for my candles all the time, and everyone here is SUPER!

Thanks again!

Liquid soap is a tough nut to crack without some basic CP soap experience.

May I suggest purchasing a base, such as those from Brambleberry?

http://www.brambleberry.com/High-Sudsing-Liquid-Soap-Paste-P4847.aspx

http://www.brambleberry.com/Castile-Liquid-Soap-Paste-P4846.aspx

I bought both of those bases and made them at the same time. Am pleased with both and also use it for foam hand dispensers by diluting 50% with water. If I had one complaint, it would be that they are both a yellow/orange color so adding colorant may be a problem...but I'm not sure of that since I didn't try.

The only oils I've found to NOT turn a rich amber color in liquid soap are coconut and palm kernel. Used alone each is great as a household cleanser, but not so much as a hand/body soap.

All other oils turn some shade of orange. Most do not hold colorants in suspension for very long - even if initially it appears they will. Embrace the amber.

The only way I could think of to keep a clear formulation and possibly be able to color would be to use surfactants. Then you'd be recreating the dime a dozen soft soaps on the big box store shelves.

You can use candle fragrance oils as long as they say BODY SAFE. They usually will also say what percentage is safe to use. I believe 2% would be the norm for liquid handsoap, but I've never made it before so you should double check that. You cannot use candle colorants for bath & body products. You will need to find body safe colorants.

Hope this helped :)

As posted above you can use skin safe fragrances at or below the manufacturer's recommended usage rates.

With liquid soap you will find that the different fragrances and essential oils will cause different changes to your diluted soap paste. For instance, many will cloud the final product. Some cause the soap to thin, others to thicken to gel consistency.

As you begin your journey with liquid soap give plenty of time to test each and every fragrance in your soap dilution. Allow it to set for several days before making final judgement on if you like it or not.

I want to thank everyone for the information and the links. I think I have a lot to learn, and do feel I need to study up on this for awhile. lol!I have no experience in this field, but willing to listen. Thanks so much!

I just started looking into making liquid soaps and I picked up the book "making natural liquid soaps" by Catherine Failor, while I haven't ventured into making it yet, the book gives good step by step directions and a lot of background information. It is a little over whelming at first but I think it's a good reference book.

One day I was lost on youtube. You know what I mean, you look up one specific video to watch and then just start clicking the ones that catch your eye, but in a few hours you always end up watching cat videos........There is a joke there somewhere.

Anyway, I don't remember who made the video, but she was making liquid laundry soap in a crock pot and it was a very good video. She made the soap with potassium hydroxide instead of sodium hydroxide so that it would be a final liquid soap instead of grating solid soap and cooking it. I believe from start to finish it was several days in the crock pot, stirring and adding water etc.

I guess my point is that you may want to surf about youtube (watch out for those cat videos, they always catch you!!) and at least have a good look at a liquid soap to give you a visual. :)

:tiptoe: ...............okay, now I totally want to check out Maru!!!!!!!
