clueless
Okay so I took the plunge!!! I gave my hand at candle making for the first time tonight! I was so excited and even more excited to see the end result. I used soy wax 415 with fruit loops FO (it smells absolutely amazing!!!) and an 8oz jar. To melt my wax I used a the pyrex measuring cup and placed it in a pan with water. This worked very well! Kept check on temps and poured the 8oz jar and then did some little tarts. I also made a votive with the leftover wax but there wasn't enough to fill to the top.The top of my 8oz jar is so smooth and pretty. I didn't even have to do a repour!!! The tarts turned out just perfect as well. Not too soft at all. I did use a little stearic acid about a tsp? The only thing that bummed me out was the color. I used dye chips and followed directions. The color was supposed to be a sky blue but it turned out like a mint green. So I'm guessing I need alot more dye chips or need to invest in some liquid dye. I know it's not much but I'm thrilled with the results. Please let me know what you think. Tomorrow evening I'm going to try paraffin wax!! emahleem
They are so cute! Where did you get the fruit loops FO? And how long are you planning to let them cure before testing?
clueless
They are so cute! Where did you get the fruit loops FO? And how long are you planning to let them cure before testing?I purchase the candle kit from rustic scents on ebay so fruit loops was one that I chose. I tell you, it truly smells just like a real fruit loop!! I was drooling the whole time. Made me want to run out and grab a box lol. I plan on letting it sit for atleast 3 days before I test it. IwantItgreen
Look great! That said, I would like to direct you to a different jar. The easiest jars to start with are ones that are taller than they are wide. I would recommend a standard jelly jar for starters. The jar you choose makes wonderful wickless jars. Those are jars that go on warming plates. Why isn't that a good jar? Soy burns down, then out. I myself have pour wax in this jar and this is what happens. You will need a larger size wick in that jar in order for the MP to reach the edges. By the time the melt pool (MP) gets to the edges of the jar the whole jar of remaining wax is melted. (That means the depth of the melt pool is way to deep, but because the jar is so wide you need such a large wick). When the whole jar is filled with molten wax, your wick pretty much can go whereever it wants. I do realize that it's not that tall, but it could very easily flop over into the wax and extinguish itself. The jar pictured is an 8 oz jar, they do make a 16 oz jar that would work better because it's taller. HTH's! Wasn't trying to be nit-picky

Wasn't trying to be nit-picky All I bought was the small wide jars, but I'm sure I can find something taller to use tonight. I didn't know anything about that. But I have my fingers crossed for a nice burn when I do light it up. It's so hard waiting for it to cure!! It smells so yummy in the container. Stella1952
That said, I would like to direct you to a different jar.Let's see how things go with the burn before we start directing people to a different container. I don't agree fully with your remarks about what constitutes the "easiest" container to wick, nor your assessment of what will happen with this container. This one does appear to be pretty squat, with a diameter measurement that exceeds that of the height - not an ideal scenario. I do not know what wick type/size was used in this container so it's hard to predict.I DO hope when clueless begins testing this candle, it's posted in the Veggie Wax discussion forum where most veggie wax people read and can offer their observations. The worse thing that could happen is that it doesn't burn properly, but hey, I'm learning! Never know, this jar may work well. Either way, I'm having a blast!!! Jillsthings
See, my husband would have called me a fruit loop, lol. Some scents I love how much they make my house smell when making them. I made Mistletoe (CS) last night and it gagged me. Oh, it was so awful. As soon as my pour pot was cooled down enough, I cleaned it out and made Hansel and Gretel's House (CS) to cover up the smell. I hate the smell of pine and Mistletoe had a really strong pine smell....my aunt loves the smell of pine, though, so that's why I made it. SliverOfWax
IWantItGreen is correct. Those jars are far better suited for wickless. Even if you use wicks with 3 mm necks, you won't get much 'candle' out of a jar that short. They are definitely adorable jars but just not suited for candles with wicks. deb426
I agree with Sliver and Iwantitgreen. The jars are adorable but I am afraid you will become frustrated and give up. Go ahead and try them but I would suggest you also try some type of plain jelly jar so that you can get a sense of how those wick as well. IMO, you will learn more about wicking from the jelly jar than the other jar, cute as it is. Not everyone has to agree with me, its just my opinion.
