soapmom25
I've done both, and they both work fine! Don't leave the lids on all the way though, or you'll collect way too much condensation. When I have a big batch to make, I use to big stock pots stacked like a giant double boiler and do it right on the stove top. I can color/scent 20 lbs. at a time doing it that way.

berrycreekcandles
just be careful not to turn them up too high the soap base burns much easier than wax
curlycoat2
Hi, I use a crockpot to melt mine. I set it on low (its an old crockpot so the temp is really low :smiley2: ) and I leave it until it is completely melted and then either ladle it out and color it and scent it in another bowl if I am making different soaps or if a log soap I color and scent it in the crock pot.Dont reheat it too many times if you dont use it all. I discovered it doesnt like that. jo
elfcat
A couple of years ago I bought a soap kettle (Life of the Party) It is basically a crock pot. Lighter and made from cheaper materials. I can only use it if I am doing more than a pound at a time.
puddin1970
I do the same thing as curlycoat does. I found an old crock pot at the goodwill and I use that - I keep it on low and its takes awhile for it to melt.. but its stays warm and you dont have to worry about reheating it over and over - I like M&P - you can use as much or as little as you need. Candybee
A couple of years ago I bought a soap kettle (Life of the Party) It is basically a crock pot. Lighter and made from cheaper materials. I can only use it if I am doing more than a pound at a time.I've got one of those too!! I love it. Only now I wish they made a bigger one. Its so easy to use and is lightweight and cleans easy too. But I need a pot that can do at least 10 lbs at a time so I guess I will look into getting a crock pot.For those of you that take the lid off when you are melting your base you should actually leave the lid on. Go ahead and let the condensation form on the lid. You need to keep as much moisture from escaping as you can when melting your base. I always cover when melting whether in the microwave or in a melting pot.
