Adding FO without mess

:embarasse Yes, I am embarrassed to ask, but how do you add your FO without having it run down the side of the bottle and all over and how do you get only the amount you are aiming for. If I make a single jelly jar and aim for say 8%, I pour my soy wax into the measuring cup on the scale to the weight amount, add color, cool to 175, add FO all by the gms. But, I always have it drip or if I pour faster to stop that, I end up overpouring. I used to put it in a small glass, and it still ran down the sides and then there is always some left in the glass. So, help us newbies that are sloppy! Please! Beth

The FO's that come in a squeezeable plastic bottle I switch the top to a flip top (the kind with a spout). If they come in glass I have HDPE bottles I transfer them into with the flip top. See attached photo.

Hey Candle Man, that is a great idea. Do you buy the tops to fit or do you need to get the whole bottle set-up? Then I could just squirt a bit or even drip at a time. would it have to be a special kind of plastic (Fo do a number on some kinds...just ask me! LOL) If so, where would I get some? Thanks. Beth

You can get just the caps #20/415 will fit a 1,2, & 4oz bottle. The #24/415 will fit an 8 or 16oz bottle.

If you notice the bottom of your FO bottles most of them are HDPE either natural (a frosted look where you can see through them) or white (you can not see how much fo is in the bottle).

I would recommend Candlechem as a source for the bottles and caps. Personally I prefer the Yorker dispensing caps versus the flip tops, but either way it's a great idea.

I keep knocking off the little red cap on my Yorker caps. The flip tops work nice but you always seem to get a little FO on your finger when you flip it. I measure my FO's in a small glass measuring cup (which I weigh on a scale!) so that I can pour back any excess.

PS- Thought someone else might not know what a "Yorker" cap was so here's a picture:

If I don't have the right tops, I just pour down a small bamboo skewer into my measuring cup on the scale. I have tons of those skewers around, they're useful for a lot of stuff.

Pouring down a tongue depressor or Popsicle stick would work too. For small amounts, like one smelly, I use a pipette.

Well thanks, you guys! All your ideas are great and I will look into them. The bottle tops seem maybe the best way for me. I get FO on my fingers anyhow, and on....LOL. You should see the day I shook the orange liquid color with the cap loose. Thanks again especially for the picts as I didn't know what Yorker caps were till now. :highfive: Beth

Peaks already sells their FOs with flip top squirt bottles.

I bought some flip top lids from BCN for 16 oz bottles but they were just a tiny bit too small for the Peaks 16 oz bottles. If BC's were size 24mm would Peaks be 28? Or were Peaks 20mm? Can anyone help me??!

The companies I buy FO from send the flip top lids when 16 oz bottles are ordered. I always ask for a couple extra for the smaller bottles. One company charges $.12 each, and the other company throws them in free. I bought a couple small measuring cups from Wal mart that only hold 4 oz, and I dribble my FO into the cup directly from the bottle. That way I can weigh the FO and stop at the correct amount easily.
