Golden Brands 415

Recommended Posts

I use it as the 75% part in my own 75/25 blend and I really like it. Adding just a little paraffin really helps with smooth tops -- I just have to use the heat gun the tops because of sinking / nippling / cracking around the wick. It does adhere better to jars if they're warmed, so no room temp glass when pouring for me.

I have noticed that while there is a cure after ~2 weeks, it's really after a month that the fragrances hit their stride and I can smell one candle through the whole house (with high ceilings, even).

A good additive for it is either 2% USA or 3% BW.
What is that? The candle bug has been biting me again lately. I came to this site 2 years ago looking to make my own candles but got distracted with b&b. I don't want to sell candles but would love to make them for personal use. I think I'll try the Golden Brand since that is what a lot of peeps seem to like here.

The USA thing is an emulsifier/surfactant type of additive. You're probably familiar with that concept from B&B. In the world of soy candles, USA (Universal Soy Additive) is actually a catch-all for various food additives. The problem is, if you make candles out of straight vegetable shortening you tend to get a "bloom" called frosting or an unsightly rough surface when they're made or after they're burned. They're also prone to just deteriorate aesthetically over days/weeks/months. The monoglyceride food additives help stabilize the soy shortening to decrease that problem. It doesn't entirely work, but it helps.

It was recommended to you for the GB 415 because that's plain flaked vegetable shortening with no additives.
