  1. Not looking so pretty anymore Will finish this one out and start again with a smaller wick. Ugh! The testing just never ends! One of these days I'll get one I'm completely happy with.
  2. Thanks for the info rjdaines. Yes, I'm definitely religious about trimming my wicks before relighting. The mushroom doesn't seem to be getting any bigger but now that I am a little more than half way down the jar, I think I'm going to have to wick down. The jar isn't extremely hot but a little more than I'd like. It also started to get some soot on one side of the jar. GRRR! That's one of my biggest pet peeves!
  3. I will definitely keep going and I keep checking the jar to see how hot it's getting. So far so good. The flame doesn't seem to be very big so hopefully it will work. This wax is very similar to 6006 but seems much creamier and a bit softer once set. It has great adhesion to the jar with no wet spots showing up like I do with 6006. I will keep testing and keep you updated.
  4. Thanks! Now to test some other scents and hope they go just as well. It's taken me FOREVER to get a candle that I am pretty happy with I will just embrace the shrooms as long as they don't get any bigger, lol.
  5. I haven't posted on here in quite some time and finally started retesting candles after taking a frustration break. This is a candle made in a 12oz status jar with SWC para-soy wax, Pink Sugar at 6.5%, RRD 40 wick. I have been burning it for anywhere from 3 - 4 1/2 hours at a time and this is at over a total of 24 hour burn time and isn't even half way down It has great cold & hot throw. Put it in a bathroom where a/c doesn't blow on it and it flows out of the bedroom and down the stairs As you can see, it is cleaning the jar up pretty nicely and it doesn't get to hot. I have tried a a few CD & CDN wicks but couldn't get it near this good. So how big of a mushroom would you tolerate if everything else was working like a charm? I think this is a first for me with so many things going right that I'm ready to embrace the shroom. But of course I'll take any suggestions.
  6. WSP has one that I got and smells just like the B&B type.
  7. Great! Thank you. I start with those and see how it goes.
  8. I made a layered Palm wax candle yesterday and trying to figure out what kind/size wick to use for it. It is 3"D x 6.5"H. I have tried CSN wicks with shorter pillars but the ones I have are not long enough. This is what I have available either un-tabbed or tabbed that would be long enough to use. Flat Braid 21 Ply-Primed, 24 Ply-Unprimed, 30 Ply-Primed, & a roll that says 34-37 Ply-Primed. (Yes, I thought that was weird too, to have a range. I got this from a friend.) RRD 29 & 34 Primed CD 16 & 18 Primed So what would your suggestion be??? I also made a couple votives with the left over wax. I was thinking of CD's for those. Any other suggestions would be much appreciated. I have pretty much every wick available to use for those.
  9. I have one of those too! Works great!
  10. Yep! I've read lots about that. Tis another reason I am remelting. Dummy me poured them kinda late at night and ended up going to bed with them cooling in a warm oven. Needless to say they were hard by morning. I'm just doing a little playing and testing for now but just love the Palm waxes!
  11. Thanks for the suggestions. I am absolutely no good with metric measuring. Just haven't used it enough to wrap my whole head around it. Despite it being more accurate :smiley2: And I was just trying to avoid the whole pouring melted wax in the mold and pouring in back out. So I was a bit impatient and went ahead and poured. I poured two different molds. 1 a simple heart shape that I had done once already so knew how much that one used. But had also used that calculation I'd mentioned and had just enough wax except to do a repour. But I'm also finding that with palm wax it doesn't seem to get the sink holes like parrifin does. On the other mold, which is a double heart, I came up about 8oz short. Wasn't happy with the way either one came out so will be doing a remelt and trying again. Practice makes perfect right
  12. So does it hold true with Starburst Palm wax as with any other wax when trying to calculate how much you will need for a mold? Filling the mold with water, pour into measuring cup, look at oz. and times that by 0.8 = the amount of wax you need to melt. I'm just not sure if this holds true for pretty much all waxes. I just got this double heart pillar mold and I just don't want to be short on my wax. If I'm over some, well, I can do something else with the extra. Although I don't want to much over either:smiley2:
  13. So, to understand this correctly, you put the wick through the wick hole in the mold and tape it in place using this metal tape? Then use your wick bar to secure it tight at the other end? I never thought of using it like that. I have used wick pins for most but I do have a few molds that I would rather pre-wick. And I did buy some of this tape some time ago for a specific mold where the wick pins stand up inside the mold instead of coming up through the bottom so the wick holes had to be covered to prevent leakage.
  14. I noticed there are a couple threads going on right now about different candle warmers & tarts. I have only been trying out a couple of warmers that I picked up at Walmart that have a 25w bulb. Never saw any smoking. I have noticed smoking/steam from a tea light warmer though as I think they get a lot hotter. So now i just received a couple candlewarmer.com warmers and threw in a 1oz tart to test. These warmers are a lot larger than the walmart ones so it seems a 1oz tart does not make the melt pool deep enough. I only had it on for a couple hours before heading out to work but my concern is that a 1oz tart is not enough wax for these large warmers. The melt pool isn't very deep at all and I could see where maybe it could start smoking/steaming after left on for a long length of time. So how many 1oz tarts or clamshell cubes would be appropriate for these warmers? These are the 25w lightbulb style ones. I also got one of the bowl/hot plate type warmers but have not tried it out yet. I will test again when I get home in the morning and will be checking the temp on the wax.
  15. Now see, those are great looking to me! I'll have to post a picture to show what the 2 I poured look like. I'm not really talking about just seeing the square outlines. That I can deal with. I only poured 2 clamshells & a couple tarts on my first test of the wax. At least now I know it can be done So for those of you that get those smooth tops, at what temp do you pour?
  16. Uhhhh, Nope!! Not quite that bad, lol. Just some mild ripples, I guess you could say. I guess I am just used to the nice smooth tops of the paraffin I was using. But if all my scents throw like the one I'm testing now does than I'll deal with the ripples
  17. I try to pour right to the rim without overflowing. I did pour one with my previous blend on a scale to see what the actual weight would be if I poured to the rim and the most I could get was 2.8oz into it. I have no idea how some here can squeeze a full 3oz in them, lol. I'm hoping to get some time this weekend to pour some more. My darn full time job just keeps getting in my way of candle & tart making. Well, I was hoping some of those experienced with this wax had some more input....... Hello? anyone?
  18. Ok, so I had to break down and buy a sample of KY Para-Soy from all the good reviews I've read on here. But the few tarts and clamshells that I poured did not come out smooth on top. They have ripples all over the tops I've only used straight paraffin for my previous tarts & clamshells, so is it the soy that is causing this? What is the best way to avoid this? Pouring cooler? I poured at around 150-155. Other than that, I love how whey come out of the clamshells so easily compared to my previous blend :smiley2: And I threw one in the warmer before taking kids to school this morning and came home to a house full of Creme Brûlée scent
  19. And I can't help you with the wax your using (I use a para-soy)But in my limited experience with ECO, and lots of reading here, the ECO's burn much hotter than other wicks. I tried an ECO 6 in a 3" diameter and it was way to much. Went down to a 4 and still the flame seems awfully big with flickering & smoking. Tempted to go down to a 2 but probably will ditch the ECO's altogether. I'm leaning towards either the CD's or HTP. Testing a couple jars now 3"D and doing well with a CD 8
  20. I do believe I have a sample pack of zinc's too! Just haven't gotten around to trying them out yet. May have to do that on my next go around Thanks for the suggestion!
  21. Thanks Steve. I remember you had used this wax in the past from prior posts and I had actually tried your recipe a couple months ago using 464 because that's what i had. Although now I read a lot that that particular wax doesn't do well for a lot in regards to hot through. I tried it with a few different scents and all seemed to smoke and soot a lot with a CD 10 using just 6% at the time. I poured some yesterday(6006 alone) using a CD 8, HTP 73, and ECO 4. Letting them cure a couple days and see what happens. I'm determined to get this wax wicked before I dig out the GL 70/30 I have that someone gave me:rolleyes2 Thanks to the rest of you also! I am taking anything and everything into consideration at this point :smiley2:
  22. OK! Off I go to pour some more. I'm going to try wicking down on the ECO, try a CD 8, & continue burning the HTP 73 and see what becomes of it. I may go back a little later and try a LX........Oh heck!! Might as well pour with that too while I'm at it. Do you think a 18 might work? I was given CD's & LX's in every size when I got all my supplies from a friend, so plenty to test with
  23. The tarts I'm testing now, I use 8%. Some scents I have had duds where they didn't last long or were just weak all around but most so far have been great. Now let me clarify, when I said 2 days, I turn the warmer on in the early AM and off when I go to bed. So I guess you could say approx. 24-36 hours with some longer. I wasn't sure if that was good or not because I have heard some folks here say theirs last a week! I have never used Scenty so I can't compare but I have had some co-workers test some for me in there Scenty burners and were very pleased. I am using 2 warmers I picked up at Walmart. One is a Better Homes one and the other I think was just an off brand. Both use 25watt bulbs. I also have a nightlight plug in style that I got off ebay. I think it uses a 15watt bulb.
  24. I use paraffin, 75% 4794/25% 4630 and I have been testing, testing. Most last AT LEAST 2 days, all day long, some longer. I have not tried soy yet. I need to stick with what I have before I tread into those waters.:smiley2:
