  1. I love the hanging tarts. They're really nice. As far as the clamshells It's hard to say. I think I agree that the white goes better with the hanging ones, but the brown is interesting. I think they would work well with some better typsetting & give an interesting rustic feel.
  2. It was glass glow & I was reheating candles that were poured the day before. I think I uped it to 195 because I wanted to make sure I kept the crystals. The FO is my blend of about 5 different SOS scents & it totally kept it's scent throw. The dye was peaks hunter green liquid & I was a little heavy with it. I hadn't had a problem with the lowest oven temp so I'd figured it was just an issue with the heat. It's possible it could have been from the oven needing cleaned or something. It was strange because it was like the only thing affected was the color was browner. It also could have been from spilled wax on the baking sheet burning off. I don't believe I'd cleaned it before I noticed the candles were crooked.
  3. You guys are able to remelt wax in the oven? Or do you mean just loosen it a little? I had a couple candles accidently cool at an angle and decided to see if I could remelt them in the oven to straiten them. It worked, but my wax scalded or carmalised or something because they turned from green to brown.
  4. Oh actually that doesn't sound bad at all! I just read this blog post http://swiftcraftymonkey.blogspot.com/2011/01/iron-chemist-results-sci.html and it doesn't sound like alot of tricky mixing at all. Hmm . . . I think I'd like to try one before I go crazy and buy chemicals, but this has potential!
  5. Oh yea. It totally was a shampoo bar. I'm new & didn't know the difference. What is sindet? How about you just send me a link to yours? I suspect it would involve more chemestry than I'm up to making myself . . . of course I just admitted to knowing nothing so I could be wrong. I'm fine with finding a product I don't have to make myself. I'm just sick of being stuck with "mystery scent chosen by X manufacturer" . . . I mean sure I'd be interested in learning, but I don't really need another project. . . . you know how it goes.
  6. I picked up a sample bar from a lady in Longview, but she didn't make any promises and was worried that the glycerine (I think it was glycerine . . . it could have been one of the other ingredients *sigh*) would make it absorb extra moisture & she was right. My hair was nice and puffy for about 2 hours today & then it fell real flat. I'd be interested in trying. Where do you get yours from?
  7. I'm definately not the person thank knows anything about dupes, but here's the scent profile. It seems like it wouldn't be hard to mix up something similar from a few little bottles Musk, accented by Bergamot, Lavender, Jasmine, Rose, Sandalwood, Amber and Vanilla
  8. Thank you for this post!!! We have been buying different night light bulbs to try to make our wax night light melt again and failing miserably. 15Watt night night bulbs. They really should put that somewhere on the container . . .
  9. Thanks for the link. According to that site it looks like Oat Powder is going to be the best ingrediant for the type of volume I like (I need more of a root boost than bodifying curl). On the product details sheet it also calls it Oat Flour. Is this different than the oat flour you can get in the specialty baking section? If I've interpreted my research right that the oat flour can be used as an additive to a shapoo base. I have no idea how to figure out proportions on this, but it seems like a start to getting the kind of shampoo I want and smell the way I want. I'm also starting to get the impression that shampoo might be extremely difficult to work with. . . .
  10. I just got a sample from Elements a few days ago. I haven't done anything more than sniff it. I really like it, but my housemate pointed out that it's a very green dragonsblood. It smells more like the dragons blood plant than the resin. I thought it was a really good description. So is there one of those others than smells more like resin than plant? It would be wonderful to be able to pick different ones for different purposes.
  11. Has anyone had any issues with Peak? The batch I got a month ago has been good. (good crystals and scents)
  12. I did a little bit of research in the shampoo aisle. It seems like wheat protein is the ingrediant that seems to appear in most of the good volumizing shampoos. A couple even advertise it as the key. So has anyone seen/does anyone make a shampoo with wheat protein. Is that something that one could buy and just use as an additive? I haven't done any net research on this yet.
  13. There's definately a trick to dipping. The first time I played with candlemaking some friends and I tried to did. The result was very . . . . well I'll just call it mushroom shaped and leave it at that.
  14. Thank you. That was exactly the information I needed. I was walking past the soap aisle in the grocery store & realised that I didn't know the answer to that question. Obviously I'm not silly enough to assume that I could melt and repackage commercial soap, but I wondered if it wouldn't be a way to go through the process as a learning experiment & simply couldn't answer why that was or wasn't a good idea & that was disturbing. Are all melt and pour soaps glicerine based than? I've fallen in love with a FO that wants to become soap and so I'm mentally feeling out the idea of melt and pour and working with molds and stuff, since somewhere along the line I ordered a couple molds it seems like my melt & pour experimentation is inevitable.
  15. OK what I meant is I know that melt and pour base is a soap that can be melted down and altered. What makes this different from a finished soap. Can all soaps be melted down & color or fragrance added (if they aren't at full scent load of course)
  16. I haven't done any research yet, but I'm curious to know what your favorates are . . and why. I love the dark yet sweet scent of fig.
  17. I know this is probobly another dumb question that could be answered by searching the forum . . . but I'm not sure where to even start looking. What's the difference between a melt and pour soap and a base? can any soap be melted down, rescented and stuck in a mold?
  18. Also chocolate. Everyone loves the smell of chocolate.
  19. I just figured I'd update this thread since I've been playing. I think I'm getting pretty close to having a fuctioning recipe The origional Edible Body Paint 3 tb. beeswax 3 tb. coconut oil 3 tb. cocoa butter 1 tb. honey powder (optional) 1/2 tsp. flavoring food coloring to suit... Melt the 1st 3 ingredients, stir in the honey, flavoring and color. Pour into tubes or other containers. -=-=- I have no clue how you're supposed to measure beeswax by tablespoons so I did it in 1/4 cup incriments 1/4 cup beeswax loosly packed 1/4 cup cocoa butter 1/4 cup fractionalised coconut oil 2 tbs coconut oil 1 tsp honey 1/4 tsp oil based candy flavoring (or to taste) oil based fd&c coloring to color Melt beeswax & coco-butter. add remaining ingredientsl. beat with electric eggbeater until smooth and no longer waxy. place into containers. Paint -=-=-=- Opinions welcome. This is the first recipe I've worked out on my own. I think that the (shortning type) coconut oil is helping keep the color from staining the skin. I don't know enough to back up this arguement but it seems right. Do I need to add any vitamin E or preservatives?
  20. Wow. I really thought this would get more response. If nothing else someone should realise I just gave them an opprotunity for shameless self promotion and possible sales . . . Also trying to find bases via web search isn't easy
  21. Jasmine and rose are always classic. Sugary scents should be good too. For something more masculine I like oakmoss or amber. These should all make a pretty sensual oil. This might be a better post for the fragrance area.
  22. I'll throw out that if I was voting based on scent preferance I probobly would have gone with Autumn Splendor. I love cloven fruit! The Voodoo love, Holiday Frost, and Baking ones are also contenders based on scents I like but I'd really have to smell and see how the blend feels to make a decision.
  23. I voted for the dirt and grass one, but mainly because the description is amazing. Now I really want to smell your candle and see if it lives up to your words!
  24. I just wanted to drop a note and say hi. I'm another newby and I've also noticed that alot of the old pros can be a little intimidating, but are also wonderfully helpful. I know I ask a million stupid questions & some of the responses are a little on the snarky side, but it's typically better than not asking at all. Don't be afraid to look dumb. You know you'll learn something. . . . At least that's how I look at it.
  25. Wich supplier did you go through?
