  1. I'm testing wicks for my 12oz libbey jar with a 3" opening. The first test is a 51-32-18 paper core wick I'll let you know the results. The wax is 120mp at 70%soy and parafin 140mp at 30%. No for or color I will post results
  2. I have seen new wooden wicks that have a cross shape but I have not seen them for purchase any place. Does anyone know if some one sells these wicks?
  3. Does anyone have problems with eco wicks making a wax pool that is off center. Should the wick be twisted in order to center the pool. I was testing an eco 4 wick and the pool was way off centre,it moved in the direction of the wicks curl.
  4. It soots near the end of the candle. For eco wicks should i twist them to get an even wax pool?
  5. As far as eco wicks go should i put a twist in the wick to have it rotate as it burns? The eco 4 burned on one side,it caused fliker and that resulted in soot, I hate soot! The stabillo 12 burns smoothly with no fliker but it leaves a bit of hang up in the jar. The jar is 3" diameter 3" high. Will square braid work in a 70/30 mix, what about adjusting the paraffin soy ratio? The soot is what drives me nuts. Even underwicked I still get soot, but the flame is constantly flikering so that is most likely the case. Ugh this is frustrating. I can't even buy a candle that does not soot. The parafin is 140mp soy is 125mp could that 15 deg seperation be causing this? I will keep plugging away until I get it right. I talked to a specialist and was told that some jars will cause soot especially near the end due to the way the air moves through them. All I can do is minimise soot but never fully eliminate it. HELP!
  6. Well the eco 4 is a bust. I will step it up to eco 6. The stabillo 12(aka CD 12) seems to have a melt pool that goes edge to edge, the flame is nice and stable unlike the eco 4 which seems to fliker non stop. I have a mixture question. I use 140mp parafin at 30% and a soy with 125 mp at 70%. Why do people mix parafin or beeswax into soy? What are the advantages of a parafin/soy mix? More f/o? Also what does beeswax offer to soy. The 30/70 mix I have had great scent throw for my container candles. I do make palm pillars I use 45 ply wick for those, I will try the stabillo 12 with the next palm pillar just to see if its better. Now to my question, what effect would adding f/o have on the wick size?
  7. OK OK so I was hasty, I just finished two candles one with eco 4 wick and one with a stabillo 12. the largest paper core left hang up and sooted a little bit. According to my research at wicks unlimited ,eco 4 has a consuption is .20 and has a wax pool of about 2.4-2.5". The large paper core I was utilizing had a consumption rate was about .26(I'm getting this from memory so the numbers maybe slightly off). The wax pool for the paper core was like 2.1. Soooo I'm keeping my fingers crossed. With no f/o how long should I cure these candles before burning them? I also want to try stabillo wicks on my 3" palm pillars. So far the best wick I have used is a flat braided 45 ply, it works great. Still get the occasional blow out, I might reduce the ply wick one side smaller for a thicker shell.
  8. Paraffin140 MP and soy 125mp so 30/70 mix. I use no fo. Wicks I used, lx,http,CD,square braid,paper core, cotton core,flat braid,hemp etc..
  9. I have been at this #$%& candle thing for a year. I cannot make a candle that does not soot. I tried every wick under the sun, every size and I always end up with a nice black ring at the rim of the glass container. I give up. I'll just buy candles at the store and eBay my candle making gear.
  10. Its a 18.5 oz 3 inch diameter. I have not tried CD, ECO or square braid,I'll have to keep hunting. Its a pain in the arse, I just want to give up. It drives me nuts.its too big not big enough or the wrong type. I use raw wick so i have like 25 spools.:undecided
  11. Even though I did not put any color or f/o I still get shrooms any suggestions. I can't wick up as I'm already using the biggest wick and still get hang up on the jars sides. How are square braided wicks in a soy paraffin mix 70/30. I use paper core wick for this 3 inch jar candle, I also have soot issues near the end of the burn. Its hard to tell if the soot is being produced all the time or just near the end when the flame drops below the lip of the jar. Not sure how to check for that. If i put a white sheet of paper above the flame no soot is visable or accumulates. I know every candle produces soot to one degree or another, but I have exhausted most my wick choices here. I tried http,rd,lx,cotton core, paper core, I'm left with some square braided wicks but I dubt they will be any good as well. The paper seems to work well it does soot and leaves hang up on the was but the scent throw is great. Any ideas on wicks also?
  12. At the top of my jars I'm not sure how many ounces but it 3 inch in diamater I use a 70 soy 30 paraffin mix the parrafin is 125 from Candlewick I'm not sure about the paraffin. The wick I use is a 66-44-18 paper core it leaves some hang up I tried smaller wicks but they tunnel. Some times my wife runs the fan while the candle burn and the soot only shows up near the end of the candle. She also burns it for hours and does not trim the wick. I tried a cotton core wick that was smaller but it left lots of hang up. Any advice?
  13. Everyone I talk to tells me to make sure my jar candle does not get too hot. Right now I use a 44-32-18 for a 2.5 inch slanted towards the bottom 8oz candle soy/parafin blend. I get killer ht the jar sometimes gets hard to pick up but I can still put my hand on it, just not keep it there for long time. Yakee candles in jars get so rocket hot I can't even get close to touching it yet put my hand on it. I will lower the wick until it no longer cleared the sides. Then go up one. Why do they make these super hot candles but I have to watch the heat. I will need to step down because it burns up to fast as well:wink2: something closer to eco 1 but cotton for sure it burned very well..just had to kill the shroom every 3 hours, but no sooting. Heavy f/o load too 6% well not that heavy but every wick including CD and CDN shroomed I did not try f/o. At say 5%. I will once I find the right size cotton wick.
  14. Nope not going to stop. Might stock up on more though. They destroy villages for green credits and palm wax is going to be my hang up. Give me a break..:rolleyes2
  15. I see new wicks they are in the shape of a criss cross of wood. Anyone know where to buy these things?
  16. at this rate I will be able to open a store and sell wick, I'll have all of them. Wick spools are cheaper then the tabbed wicks. At candlewic anyway.
  17. Thank you. I'm not sure people know much about this but what does adding beeswax do In a 60% soy 30%parafin and 10% beeswax do? What about messing with the parrafin soy ratio. What does paraffin add to soy?or vice versa. Right now I have a soy paraffin mix and have excellent hot throw, I did not know it could smell so nice. I just have to wrangle the wick in a bit. I keep notes and I will get it. CD wick is on deck one the current burns,
  18. Run a search for wicks unlimited, you should see charts there with what they measure.
  19. Since it seems CD does everything, or so I am lead to think. What is cotton core wick good for? Second question I use 30 %141mp 70% soy 125. What benefit would there be changing ratio or in adding bees wax?
  20. It depends on the wax some move better than othrps there are charts but only for reference. And usually the only charts are for parafin.
  21. How do you do that without heating the jar too much. I use eco 1 and it cleans the 8 oz jar but since the jar gets narrower near the bottom it gets hot. The CD 4 does the samething. The 12 oz jar is a different story, the eco 2 just does cut it for that I will get stabillow wicks.
  22. When you guys make candles is it an absolute that it cleans the sides? I have a jar and eco 2 works like a charm. Minimal soot great ht but it leaves hang on the jar. I'm now following Stella suggestion and adding a few twists to the wick? What about cotton wicks are they good? I never hear them mentioned. Is there any reason not to use CD for every container application, it seems everyone uses it?:rolleyes2 How are cotton wicks,or hemp?
  23. No these people are at least 1 hour plus away and their wick selection is rather sparce.
  24. I'm just upset because I have 90$ worth of wick that's worthkes because people on candle sites told me this is a great wick. So I'm just venting. I never burned square in just beeswax.
