  1. Actually, you get caustic potash, which makes old time soft soap. You have to "salt it out" to make hard bars. My granny (great grandmother) did it that way, until she could afford canned lye....after that, she never looked back.
  2. I haven't used a boiling bag, but I find a little milk added instead of water makes for smoother rebatches for me.
  3. I can't post pics right now, but I will say that Brambleberry's Brick Red oxide does NOT turn pink in CP soap. I used it in my bayberry over Christmas at 1/4 tsp ppo, and it's the same color as the Lifebuoy soap in "A Christmas Story"
  4. If it's only 40% fat, I wouldn't use it because shortening is 100% (or close to it) fat....it's a solid oil. I really don't know how you would calculate it.
  5. That's a great deal! And if you can find the time to take advantage of that kind of benefit, why not do it?
  6. Babassu is on my "to try" list....if it goes up much more....I think I will nix that idea. I have my favorite four....palm, coconut, olive, and castor.
  7. Congratulations on taking a class. I just jumped right in and did it, but I think a class would have saved me some grief, and some really fugly soaps at first.
  8. Hello and welcome from another newbie to this forum!
  9. Hello and welcome from another newbie!
  10. Exactly! I don't see where it would make any difference. Besides (and just my HO here), soap isn't a leave on product, so the benefits wouldn't matter much anyways.
  11. My favorite exfoliants in no particular order are.... Coffee grounds, oatmeal, and cornmeal..... Nothing imaginative, but they all work well and are dirt cheap to use.
  12. Some of the online soap suppliers like Brambleberry carry it. I think you have to fax them a hazmat waiver....I've never shipped it.....I buy it online and pick up locally.
  13. Maybe it's a misprint......the only time I use a mega amount of water is when I'm mixing a batch of my no shred laundry soap.....and I want that soft and squishy.
  14. I've heard the name.....never tried their product.
  15. I can't imagine it doing much of anything except killing your lather......I would think the soy and the lye monster (CP) would have to meet.
  16. No....I'm really not to that point yet.....although one of these days I would like to sell. I have a consistent product now, but I need to do my homework on the other stuff.
  17. Wow! I see a lot of familiar people here, and a lot of nice new people! It's nice to be here!
  18. Thanks! The "Big Guy" isn't a member over here but is on a couple of other forums.....he just mostly lurks and ends up shopping at Peak. He's addicted to the candling tutorials over here.
  19. Yep....NE Portland for the last eight years. Southern Oregon (Roseburg area) before that.
  20. Hello and welcome from another newbie in Oregon!
  21. Sorry.....sometimes I forget that the soapers here are worldwide and that all ingredients aren't available outside the US and Canada. Hmmmmmm.....palm oil isn't necessarily bad for the environment....you can get palm oil from sustainable sources too....just don't know how you're going to get it there. Regarding rancidity.....can you get hold of some ROE? It's basically a rosemary oleoresin extract, and it will extend the shelf life of soaps when used at .1% to .5% PPO. It keeps the oils from oxidizing and going rancid.
  22. Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!
