  1. My son and husband both have asthma and yes, there are certain scents that have triggered asthma attacks. They vary though...what causes it for DH doesnt cause if for my son. I was babysitting the other day for the pastors kids and they have a son with asthma. I didnt think about it and was making candles (BCN Harvest) and he said he couldnt breath. So far the only problems have been the super strong scents like Harvest, Home Sweet Home, etc. HTH - Pam
  2. never heard of it but I am also interested to find out if there is such a thing. Pam

  4. The only way that I have ever received a wax sample is through the wax manufacturing company itself........IGI, Astrolite (now IGI), etc. I have heard others getting samples from suppliers but I personally havent found those suppliers yet. :undecided HTH - Pam

  6. Ok, so I tried the suggestions you guys gave me in another post and made it with microsoft publisher. I wanted some feedback on it but dont know how to attach a publisher document. Any suggestions? Thanks for any help -- Pam
  7. Thanks to those who posted or pm'd me so far. They have all been great ideas and have got me thinking, but havent been "the one" yet. I was thinking of something victorianish - elegant, timeless, etc. but havent found it yet. Keep the ideas coming.........Pam
  8. My business name is "Scentimental Gifts". I really like the name because the word scent in scentimental refers to the scents from the candles, etc......and I like the gifts cuz Im not limited to just candles......My problem is I cant get the "right" logo. What do you see when you read: "Scentimental Gifts" Thanks in advance for all help! Pam http://scentimentalgifts.tripod.com
  9. I see now why you are getting such a high number, you are charging for everything every time you add another ounce. For example......lets say it costs $1.60/lb for wax and you add one ounce of scent that cost $.80. Add in another $ .16 for color. So far that is $2.56. Divide that by 16 (oz per pd) and you end up with $ .16/oz. That would be $ .32 for a votive plus the wick and packaging.........so lets add another $.18 to make it even. It means it costs you $. 50 to make a votive. That is actually kind of a high estimate for wax, color and wick so it should be less than that. HTH Pam
  10. I dont know where you are but I think that also has a lot to do with what to charge. For where I live (Upper Michigan) Those prices would be to high, but if you live in a city, or near one, they may be good. I charge $1.25 for 2 oz. votives and $5.50 for an 8 oz. jj........hth Pam
  11. Just wondering if they are a good company with quality products or if they are a waste of time? http://www.acandleco.com/index.cfm/fa/items.main/parentcat/1908/subcatid/0/id/152118 Thanks in advance for any replies. Pam http://scentimentalgift.tripod.com

  13. I use Ocean Mist from BCN.........its a very clean scent....one of my best sellers! HTH Pam
  14. I would start with more yellow then add red as you see fit. HTH Pam
  15. I finally got around to burning the 3 oz. jar candle I made with the J225. BTW, I didnt notice a single wet spot!!!! I burned the candle for 3 hours, had a good melt pool (about 1/4"), but I didnt think the hot throw was as good as IGI4786, but that JMO. I am interested to hear others results. Pam
  16. Just wanted to say a quick hello and welcome to candlemaking! I usually use paraffin wax (IGI4786 for containers, IGI4794 for votives and tarts). I have tried two types of soy and cant say that I was comfortable using either. I have been making candles for about 3 years now and am finally thinking about starting pillars. I believe I have a wonderful product with the three types I make now and feel I am ready to begin the next. Dont rush yourself to please others. If you try something you arent comfortable doing, you introduce the risk of selling or giving something away that isnt of the highest quality that you can make. Take it slow and test, test, test! Again, welcome.........good luck with the candles and let us know how it has been going. Pam
  17. My daughter (who is 9) has started her own business (with my assistance of course). She makes smelly jellys. For the longest time she didnt have a name for her business. My candle business is "Scentimental Gifts". She came up to me one day and said she knew what to call her business. She named it "Scentimental Kids". Is that cute, or what? Pam
  18. Well, I got my huge 11 pound sample of J225 and have poured some. I think this has got to be the softest wax I have ever seen (usually use 4786 for containers)! I actually bent the slab of wax in half with my bare hands. The wax colors fairly well, but the color is much creamier than with the 4786. Not bad, just more pastel than bold. It has an awesome cold scent throw. Did a very small 3 oz. multisided jar with a 44-24-18Z. I used one lb wax, 1/4 red raspberry red dye chip and 1 oz. Pink type FO from willow woods. I will burn this tomorrow and let you know how it burns and the hot throw. So far this wax sounds like j223 to me (what ive heard anyway), but will see about wet spots tomorrow also. I still cant believe they sent me an entire 11 pound slab!!!!!!!!!!! Pam
  19. They must be pretty big, I just looked at their website and they have had nearly 150,000 people look at their site!! I wasnt impressed with their site either, but that JMO Pam
  20. Hubby called me at work and said I got a heavy box in the mail today. It says wax sample from Honeywell in PA. The only sample I am expecting in the J225. He said the box wax 11 pounds!!!!!!!!!!! I cant believe they sent an 11 pound sample! WOOOOOHOOOOOOO. I will be trying it tonight and will post my results asap. Pam
  21. My 9 year old daughter makes smelly jellies in the little one ounce jelly jars that I got for a steal on ebay. She sells them each for $1. In less than two hours one day she sold 40 of them. Just imagine if your daughter was selling $5 or $10 candles how fast she would make the money for her trip. Dont give up without a fight. I know I personally cant say no to a child, and neither can most others!! Pam
  22. I dont use this wax, but for those who do, there is a case of J50 wax for sale on ebay. Here is the item number if you are interested: Item number: 8217401876. Just so everyone knows, this is not my auction or anyone I know. I just know how expensive wax is and thought someone might get a good deal. The auction has less than 12 hours to go. Good luck if you bid. Pam
  23. I buy my corn cob at Walmart in the pet section. It says pet litter on it. HTH Pam
  24. I also would like to know which companies they are. I have had some bad luck with fo's lately and am wondering why. The samples were awesome, bottles not so awesome. Please pm me with the ones that you feel are not worthy and I will let you know if the ones I have had problems with are different ones. Thanks ~~ Pam
  25. pm'd ya the site where I got my info from. Pam
