  1. Just curious if anyone is selling these at craft shows and how they sell. Also not sure what to charge for the 3 oz and 8 oz bottles (will come with box & reeds). I am thinking $5 and $10. Retail for the 8 oz is usually between $10 and $15. My price wont make me much of a profit, only about $2 per item. Thanks for your advice.
  2. The vanilla added was 1 oz per 1 lb. But there is barely a smell to them. I think I'll scrap the vanilla scent on the next batch. I have a feeling that's the problem as well.
  3. I've been making gel candles for a year now and this is the first time I've seen this... I made some candles that wont set, they are goopy. Any ideas? The only thing I did different was to use a new vanilla scent and liquid color. The scent was labeled gel safe. I've done liquid color before with no problem. Any thoughts?
  4. I have a bunch of shells soaking in mineral oil, when I opened the container it had a fishy smell. Do you think it's ok to use the shells or should I pitch them? I dont want fishy smelling candles.
  5. I tried doing these over the weekend. They turned out super cute, but man are they time consuming. I just hope they sell!
  6. I'm intrigued. I found directions on the net, but can you use soy instead of pillar wax? I have tons of soy.
  7. I make drink candles, I'd like to add a lemon twist but I'm not sure how to make them.
  8. I've never heard of this before, why would you dip a bear in wax?
  9. If you're selling them, try using the beer scent. It smells terrible, but it's a great seller, especially with men. I also do the yellow beers and a few of the darker (adding a little gold or brown) for contrast.
  10. Now I'm not sure where you would find this, but what about a little glass test tube?
  11. For those of you who sell at craft shows or on-line, what are your best gel candle sellers?
  12. I color mine with gold and a bit of brown for a more realistic color. If you're selling them try scenting with beer scent. It smells aweful, but the customers really like it. I sold out my last batch but still had the sea breeze ones left.
  13. I use gold and a little bit of brown to color mine, gives it a realistic color. If you're selling them try beer scented (smells aweful though), I sold out the last batch I made and still had the sea breeze scented ones left. I even floated a quarter in one, turned out cute. I got a lot of comments about that one.
  14. I prefer gel to soy, I like to be creative and gel gives me that freedom. I think everyone already mentioned the down sides to it, plus I dont seem to sell as many gels as soys, but I do charge more for gels than soys. I get a lot of "they're so pretty I wouldnt want to burn it". It takes a lot more concentration to make a gel, but that is my way of relaxing. It can definately be a lot of fun.
  15. I know this is not the proper forum, but I usually make gel candles that look like drinks. I had several people ask about artificial drinks that they can keep on their bars. I am having some trouble finding a website or book that can tell me how to make artificial drinks. Does anyone have information on this topic? Thanks.
  16. It's Absenthe. I've never seen it myself, but I was told it's more of a neon green color in real life. He has several other candles I have made on his bar and wanted to add that as well.
  17. I had a request to make a candle similar to this drink. I want to use gel and cut some into ice cubes to make the chunky look at the top, but I'm not sure how to get the creamy look at the bottom using gel. Any suggestions? Would you add a little soy to the gel to get the cloudy effect?
  18. I do have a back-up thermometer, I'll try it again and pay close attention to the temp. Thanks.
  19. :undecided Dang, already ordered the crystals. Oh well, at least they're cheap, guess I can always save them to use at my wedding.
  20. Yes I had sand in the bottom as well. I poured at 180, I wanted to control for bubbles, which obviously didn't work.
  21. No joke, it sizzled - much like the sound meat makes when it sizzles. Maybe I had a bad shell in there.
  22. Hi, I wanted to try making and selling smelly jellies, I just wondered how good of a seller they were? I make gel drink candles and I get a lot of lookers and comments like, "They're so cute I wouldn't want to burn them". It's getting annoying. I need something that sells!
  23. I tried my first seascape and it turned out cloudy - well first when I put in the gel it sizzled and made a million bubbles, then it turned cloudy. I washed the shells very well, even soaking them in water, and then soaked them in mineral oil overnight and still this happened. Am I missing a step?
  24. Can the stamp be affixed to the side of the mold, then the candle poured and when set, the rubber stamp removed to leave the deep imprint? I really have no idea, but it seems to me that stamping them in would cause a billowing out of wax and you wouldnt have that smooth surface.
