  1. We also use 4630 and love it! We use LX wicks, but don't use the 8oz mason jar, so I am no help with the size wick that would work for you.
  2. I think they wanted to do the tins because they thought it would be safer....
  3. Thanks, everyone, for the responses. These are two young college kids just trying to save money on Christmas presents and make them themselves. I will check the kits, though. Maybe the kits will make enough for what they need. I suggested the melts, and the tins and warmer pads are a good idea! We have the fragrances and dyes for them to use. I have a feeling they are going to do this one time for the holidays and that will be it...unless they get "bit" by the candlemaking bug!!!!
  4. Depending on how much wax you want to start with, I would make a "full" batch and pour it into ice cube trays. When cool, take them out and bag them. Then, figure out how many it takes to fill the mold. Ex. if each of the "fancy" molds takes 6 oz of wax to fill, and each cube is 1 oz, you would need 6 cubes to make one batch. When ready to make a batch, only melt down 6 cubes. That way, you are not reheating the large batch over and over and losing scent each time. HTH
  5. Absolutely beautiful! Love the way you have them displayed. Where did you find the baskets - they look very nice!
  6. Hi, everyone! It seems like I haven't been on the board in forever!! I can remember when I couldn't go through a day without checking in to see what was new - but, life got busy, as it does for everyone. I have a new grandson - Cameron Edward is 5 months old! OK - to my question. A friend of mine's son and girlfriend would like to make candles in tins for Christmas presents. They want to buy the wax and wicks at Michaels, but I have no clue what size wick they should use with a 4" tin. I would give them some LX wicks that we have in stock, but - again - I have never tested the Michaels wax. Can anyone give me a starting point for them? Actually, I am still trying to talk them into holiday shaped melts and buy a tealight burner.....I think that would be safer.....
  7. I remember the first time we ordered 1,000 and they came like this....I was surprised and disappointed. We were having trouble with the wicks separating from the tabs with this new batch - a real PIA when you have just poured jars and jars and then try to secure the wicks just to have them start floating! Our subsequent orders have been received in the same packaging and, even though I am not thrilled with it, I have gotten used to it. BUT, if I ever found a company that separated them and had them delivered the same way the packs of 100 come, I would switch immediately! Too much time is spent, as far as I am concerned, carefully separating them as I need them......
  8. I do not think that anyone here is being too "serious" about this...at least not in the way you meant it, LuminousBoutique. When experienced chandlers read that someone fairly new to candlemaking is thinking of letting someone put their "once-tested" candles in children's room, there is definitely need for concern. It is different for everyone; for some, it takes years to perfect their candle - for others, a few months - and just because a candle burns well under one type of circumstance does not mean it will burn well if burned a different way (four hours increments vs power burning). I know that some threads turn into gloom and doom re people handing out their creations early in the testing stages, but I didn't see that happen here - just good, caring advice. I would suggest that you choose where your suppliers are going to be, what type of jar, etc you are going to use and when you have tested awhile, let her test for free. Then, if she would like to buy, you can decide if you want to give a discount. We give family a 25% discount - that covers our supplies and gives us a little to put towards the business. You can always use her suggestions as to what scents she would like to see you carry, but it is very difficult to please everyone and your testing may determine what scents you will carry and which just will not work for you. I wish you luck - it is fun, expensive, rewarding, frustrating....well, you get the idea.....LOL
  9. I second trying to find a wax locally - with the cost of was and the high cost of shipping, that would be ideal! Unfortunately, we have no wax suppliers close enough for us to drive to, so we order IGI4794 from Candlescience. We used to order from Candles and Supplies in PA, but their wax cost and shipping ended up being higher - even though I think they are closer to us. (I have never mapped it out, so I could be wrong about the distance....) 4794 is a two pour wax, easy to work with. Hope that helps!
  10. Yup, that is one of the reasons we went with the apothecary jar - we thought it would be great if we could fill the top also - kind of different from other candles we had seen. Of course, when it got right down to it, we decided it wasn't safe to do that. Even if we put a warning to take the plastic off, we KNOW that most people don't read the warnings! Heck, we didn't even read the warnings before we started making candles!!
  11. I still have the Nature's Garden order to do, so I will definitely get a sample of the Vanilla Bean. I did receive a sample of the regular vanilla from Candle Science, but my two bottles of Lavender Vanilla leaked all over the sample, so I am having a hard time checking the oob. I will put it in some wax and see how it does. Thank you!!!!
  12. We double wick and our customers have never mentioned whether they preferred it or not. We had the same problem with not being able to get a single wick to work. I have seen people post that it is possible, but we could never achieve it.
  13. Well, I will admit that it was BC that I purchased the 1,000 wicks that kept popping out of the bases. I guess I didn't realize that they just buy them like that from the maufacturer and that even if I bought from another supplier, I may have the same problem. I guess that is not the case....maybe I should be looking for another supplier for my LX wicks......
  14. We also ran into this with an order of 1,000 wicks - and I was NOT a happy camper...lol I did buy a pair of needle-nose pliers (which I agree is not the best idea - tends to bend the tab), but I don't think I should have to pay for tabbed wicks if they don't work! Luckily, instead of having a whole batch misbehave, I only have an occasional one pop out of the wick. I can certainly understand the occasional one, but when you start having to redo several batches at a time, it can get very frustrating.
  15. We have ordered from a few different suppliers and prefer BCN - they seem to absorb quicker. Vicky - we use Vanilla Bake, which is very heavy - maybe some vanillas are "lighter" and absorb quicker??
  16. I am only in two shops. Our first shop was 25%, but the second shop wanted 30%. When I mentioned that the other shop I was in was getting 25%, she agreed to 25%. (Apparently, she was carrying a few items that were also in the other shop we were in, so she had agreed to a lower percent to match with the other consignees as well.)
  17. I had several fragrance orders to do on Friday and realized on Saturday that I had forgotten to order one of our customer's faves, Mulberry Madness, from Cajun Candle Supply. I emailed them last night, asking if they could add it to our order, but didn't really think they would be able to. Received an email this morning that he would take care of it for me and if I don't receive a confirmation email by noon, email him back and he would check to make sure it was added. What great customer service - an email on SUNDAY, no less!
  18. I love reading through your posts, Top - not only are they informative, your pillars are just beautiful. Even though I am still struggling to wick the Crystal Palm Pillar correctly, after seeing this Feather Palm Pillar, I may just have to try that one next - just gorgeous!
  19. Since our wickless jar does not have the metal handle nor wicks, we discount them $1.50 from our wicked candle, same size.
  20. I have found the same thing...that darn vanilla can take up to two weeks for me!! lol And I also do the 4 oz beads to 1 oz FO, and that seems to work for me.
  21. Thanks, Everyone!! I really appreciate your input!! I THINK when I ordered from CandleScience, I ordered the "Vanilla" instead of the "Very Vanilla"...:rolleyes2 I will test it, but off to check out the other vanilla"s that were recommended. Thanks again! Jane
