Cheap/good tall and skinny wooden molds

Hey you guys,

Came across this link regarding tall and skinny wooden molds, it looks like a great site with well priced products.  In my mania for tall and skinniness, I am ordering a couple with dividers and hanger tools.  They supply to BB, but it is way cheaper to buy direct.  I have no connection with them other than being psyched about their stuff.  Emailed the owner with a couple of questions (yes, these are fine for CPOP, also the dividers are tall enough to use in the tall and skinny molds), s/he was a great communicator.

Posting this on dish, too.  Feel free to curse me for enabling :)

Those sure are great prices. I notice they also have the same slab mold I got from BB for a lot less. Those are good deals! Thanks for the link!

I am also excited about their 'bright red' mica. This may be the best true red mica I have seen so far. Now I know I am gonna end up buying that! LOL

I know, I was excited about some of the micas too, but restrained myself because I bought the other stuff.  Next order will include some of those,  I love that they have oz and a half sizes, weirdly that seems like the exact amount that is good to test with.  Enough to try several batches but not too much that you have to face them in your mica section every time you look at it if they are a fail :)

Oh, just got it maybe, tall silicone mold?  I was going to try and make my own mold liners for these with no melt mylar or silicone baking linerrs, they would be perfect with a liner.  I;'ve thought of making my own silicone molds but the silcone mix is so expensive it is not that much more expensive to buy them.  B/t/w, another great deal if you need a small liner is bescented's mini molds, they are on sale for 50% off for $3.50 each.  They definitely need support, but they fit really well into my ED silicone molds with some cardboard tucked into the bottom and sides, size is @ 2.75 x 3 x 10 (w/h/l),at that price you cannot go wrong.  Sorry to enable (again).

Ok, weird, just went to bescented to get the link, couldn't find the individual mini molds, just a listing for buy 5 get one free at the original price of $7.00 each.  These were at such a great individual price - expecially if you have boxes/molds you can use as supports - it might be worth checking with the site owner.  Maybe it was just a loss leader for her, though.

Cb, what on earth is one of those swirls?  I am off to google it now.  How great is it to be able to experiment with making beautiful swirls (OK, in my noobiness it is iffy, but hugely fun to try), for the price of oils and lye?

I am convinced that coconut FO and cheapish reusable soap liners are the holy grail/s of the soapmaking world.  I think the FO is out of reach, but someone can do the soap liner surely?  I am going to make that my next project and post the results, I am too lazy and instant-gratification tended to line wooden molds with paper.  FYI, the link I posted has dividers for the mold, they are cheaper than ones I have seen anywhere else ($10 or $11 for the 9/12 inch molds, I think? Check.)  I even bought their Hanger tools, even though it is really hard for me to justify buying something I can make out of an, um, hanger, because they were not too expensive, matched the mold, and seemed like just the right thickness.

Silicone liners are the bomb! If you are not using them for soapmaking they make a great investment. They are easy to clean and can be reused over and over again.  Plus the soap just pops out. They can be pricey thou.

Re coconut-- so far I have found that Soapalooza's Hawaiian Sandalwood makes a nice coconut scented soap. Don't know what happens to the sandalwood notes but only the coconut comes through. Who knew? But that's what I have been using for a coconut soap. My customers that love coconut swear it smells so good and coconuty.

I have some coconut milk FO from Peaks. Haven't used it in CP before but its one I have in line to soap with in the next few weeks. Will let you know how it goes.

BTW-- Soapalooza's hawaiian sandalwood riced on me and seperated the first time I used it at 1oz PPO. So I use it at .7% and that works fine. The ricing wasn't too bad as it was super easy to SB back into a good workable batter, but the oil seperating out was a pain in the butt. So if you try it start out with .7oz PPO.

So, after seeing a video on you tube, I got the notion to make my own reusable Tall Skinny Mold using that corrugated

plastic.  I picked up a house for sale yard sign from my local True Value today (too lazy to go to home depot for the plain

stuff).

I really really don't want to order the one that is saved in my wishlist at bramble berry because I have enough stuff as it is.  So, figured this was a good option

to try the tall skinny mold out.  I'm going to make the mold 2.50" wide, 10" long and 3 1/2" tall I think.

I'll let you know how this cheap alternative works lol.

I've used that corrugated plastic. It works great. I have to wrap it like the dickens to get it to gel, but other than that, it is a great cheap way to mold making, and they last a long time. Mine finally split along the seams and ended up leaking, but that was after about 20 uses, so not to bad. I just haven't gotten around to make another one.

After election time I tried to get my son to go steal some of the losing parties lawn posters. Apparently he has better ethics than I do because he wouldn't do it. LOL

Well, here it is....I need to make another better one.  My cuts are cockeyed, as I couldn't find an exacto knife

and used one of my hubbys pretty sharp pocket knives.  Cut my finger too...so everything went downhill from that point LOL.

The dimensions are good though...so I will try it out Tuesday when I get to soap again.

LOL....I would want to steal those signs too.  They hang out sooooo long after an election....gets on my nerves.

www.americansoapsupplies.com has a TSM. They sell the dividers for the TSM mold also and the swirling tool for the same.  The TSM were on sale last week for $21.75 ea. I got 2 of the molds and the swirling tool. I happened to place my order 2 hours before the end of the sale. I am planning on doing M&P projects and Hot Process swirling....we shall see how that goes.....Handmade in Florida has done a couple of videos where she puts melt and pour into her CP soap...I might grow a wild hair and try this with Hot Process....I just might make me a huge mess, but I love the look of her combo soap...who knows it may come out just as beautiful...hopefully! I have not gotten my molds yet, but once I see them I may have to revisit the dividers. These TSM seem to be popular right now. :)

Candy, I've only used Peaks coconut milk once in soap, and it faded to nothing after a full cure. :( I hope you have better luck, but thought I'd give you that info. Especially since it is so heavenly OOB.

Well that sucks! I am going to try it for one of my shampoo bars. I think I will mix it with SPL's H. Sandalwood so at least some of the coconut will work. IDK-- I gotta try. Some of the reviews say its wonderful in CP. So maybe it might work for me.

Candybee, am going to place an order with Soapalooza at some point, will have to add the coconut FO to it.  Although as a newbie I am a little afraid of the ricing thing, have only had one batch out of 35ish so far be problematic (that one was scented w/SC's True Rose, love the scent, but it went to cement w/three strokes of the whisk), which was not fun.  As an aside, I LOVE sandalwood, but it has been so hard to find one that is exactly right.  Plus, even if you get close, you almost always have to assume that it is going to discolor, so I feel like I have to stay with creamish-brown colorants, not my favorite schemes.

B/t/w, you like pinks, right?  I tried BB's Flamingo Labcolor recently and it was a beautiful deep reddish pink. Might be my favorite color, I keep trying to make excuses about why it is a good color choice for any given soap ("water scent, OK, evocative of red tide, Flamingo will work" :))

Got an email from paypal and the vendor on the TS molds this am.  They had shipped and turns out s/he (not sure, just initials in the inquiry emails) was making a partial refund because actual shipping was cheaper than the estimated amount!  I got the paypal email first, saw "refund" and was bummed b/c I thought the order had been canceled, but good news for a change.  I love vendors who refund when they don't have to :)

Sorry, pawz :)  Your pup is adorable, I have a black and white one, too.  I picked him for his personality, not his looks, but darn, he is so frigging cute.

Thank you, he's now 5 years old, that was the age he was when we found him; he hid under pipe by our barn and you heard nothing but growls at first till I coaxed him with a weinie, then he followed me to the house.  He's a wonderful guard dog, tho I had to do a little basic training with him, he sits for his treats and sits to convince you to give hime one

Cb, story about the workings of the aging brain, I was checking my FO chart/notes for something else and saw that I *have* tried the SLZ sandalwood, the notes were: "Great coconut scent, not getting much sandalwood though.   Poss use as coconut mixer?".  I agree with you even when I don't know it :)  Good to know that JCA found that it was not a sticker in CP, though, that was from my MP days.

Pawz, it was meant to be.  Cute little wienie head.  I love mutts, have one and a half (my own plus joint custody of my mom's), it is so interesting to look at them and try and figure out which part came from where!  Fred (the black and white one) is mostly spaniel, God knows what Patsy's mix is, though I am convinced there is a bit of flying squirrel in there somewhere ...

I can't wait to get the second half of my shipment, according to tracking it is coming today.  The first half (loaf lid, swirlers, sample (freebie) micas was great.  I am just sadly eager to get the rest of it, it makes me wonder if my life should more exciting :)
