vberkesch
I will be doing a craft fair in a state right next to mine. How do I handle sales tax?Do I have to get another sales tax number for the state I will be selling in or do I just submit my sales tax with the state I live in?? TIA, Vanessa
EnvyCandles
Contact the state the show is in to get information on collecting sales tax, if any. Then contact your own state and ask how you handle reporting your sales as your taxable income. Generally you would not pay tax that you collected in another state, to your home state. Georgia
I know KY will allow you to do a "per show" form and pay your tax that way. However, IN requires you to register as a business (even for one show) and file quarterly tax forms. Check the state - or check with the promoter of the show. They should know. beekeeper_sd
Your promoter should hand out the appropriate sales tax papers. In most states you just have to do a tax return for that event. North Dakota is another state that requires you to get a full time sales tax license.
Candybee
Not all promoters do that nor are they responsible for you doing your taxes. But those that do require your tax ID to do the show may give you the form.Contact the state dept of taxation. Most states have a website and you can fill out the form online and send. Easy peasy. Some states have a 'transient' type of vendor form for the occasional vendor like you. Find the correct form and fill out and send it in. You should also find out when you file, how often, and where. If you intend to do the show again or sometime in the future you will want to maintain your tax ID and continue filing even if you don't make any money. Again, with most state websites the info is online. Edited August 30, 2011 by Candybee
