ChrisR
Beeswax is the best taper wax. Start with 2/0 square braid wicking and go from there.

EricofAZ
I make tapers from a metal mould, like a hawthorn one. Beeswax is great, a good hard taper formulated wax is also fine. I've made some palm tapers but you have to control the cooling of the wax and mould to prevent cracking.I use ply wicks. 15 and 18 ply. ChrisR
Yes you can use any pillar wax but you may have a hard time with the wicking if you are looking for a dripless taper. Good luck!
JanetsCandles
Pillar wax is OK for making tapers. I make the hand dipped kind, start with straight paraffin and use my own blend. I use 15 ply flat braid wick from Candles and Supplies for mine and it burns very well. I actually use a blend that is very similar to my pillar blend for making them. I find anything much softer and I get warpage on shipping them in large quantities.
