Sugar Toppings

How do they do that? I've been seeing pictures of soaps topped with colored & turbinado sugars and it really looks nice but was just wondering how they get it to stick and does it last? Does the sugar eventually "melt" away? It's only added as a decorative topping and not actually in the soap itself. Looking for something to spruce up some of my plain bars.

I'm guessing that the sugar is sprinkled on as the base has cooled enough to support the topping without melting it. I would think you probably could sprinkle turbinado on top about 10 - 15 minutes after you poured the soap into a mold. It would depend on how hot you pour your melted soap. I'd time it to see how long it takes to start setting up then try the sprinkles just as it starts.

Well...after a night of insomnia I think I've finally figured out one way to do this. This morning I took out my blow dryer, slightly heated the tops of my already cut soap just to soften it a bit. I put turbinado sugar on an unused (new) cutting board and pressed the softened top into the sugar and voila!!!! it stuck :yay:. After the tops cooled I shook off any loose bits and wrapped it. I use thin cheap saran-type wrap. I'm going to let this sit for a couple of weeks to see if the sugars melt away. This also worked on whole oats on my oatmeal soap. Didn't try any colored sugar...thinking the dye might bleed onto the soap.

Just thought I would share. Didn't want a night of starring at the ceiling go to waste :laugh2:.
