dblvon
Someone made the statment that fragrance expire in a year and essential oils get better as they age. Is this true?
Scented
Patchouli gets better with age ... cannot tell you about others. I imagine the supplier would have the information. I know that if not stored properly, even if an FO, there can be some evaporation and change (mainly in citrusy scents is where I noticed it.) Carriegsxr6
I have had some that spoiled. An orange one and a Litsea Cubeba one. Maybe its the fruit ones that spoil..
Candybee
I've never been able to keep any around long enough to spoil.
ubure
A lot of EOs get better with time. Citrus essential oils will only be good for about one year.
Candybee
I guess I better use up that lemon oil.
Scent Cellar
If you have any deep, dark, aged patchouli there are probably some peeps that will take it off your hands:rolleyes2 :rolleyes2 .
Circle
Essential oils do not spoil, but their beneficial effects can be altered. You will still ge the same fragrance but if they are very old, the benefits will no longer be valid, this will happen after at least a year
ubure
This is what I mean with spoiled: their chemistry alters and so they shouldn't be used anymore. Some of them also change their scent.
Wildcrafter
Depends on how they are stored and if the oils are touched. The bacteria on the hands, etc can get in the EOs and when they die, they definitely alter the scent and quality of the EO. If they are untouched, kept in a dark place, are not in contact with the lid or latex, they should stay good for a long time. It's true that patchouli gets better with age. Same for sandalwood, I've found. The mints can be picky of their surroundings and can turn faster than others. Same with eucalyptus. I offer this information from first hand experience. I've been working with EOs for over 25 years.
