anpross
I've been lurking around here for quiet awhile now, getting tons of helpful info from you all. I'm making candles for myself, but am wanting to make some for my family. I'm making 8oz. jar candles, but am having the wick "mushroom" on me after burning for awhile. I've tried different wicks, but am wondering does the "mushrooming" wick mean that it's too big for the jar?I would appreciate any help on this Thanks! SatinDucky
Using zincs, huh? Well, if they are, it doesn't mean the wick is too big. It depends on how big the mushroom is. All zincs mushroom to some extent. Some other wicks will mushroom if not wicked properly...
mystical_angel1219
Mushrooming can mean a variety of things.Cottons and zincs are noted for the notorious mushroom effect. If you cannot stand the mushrooming~ I would recommend using LX or CD wicks.
anpross
Thanks so much guys. I am using 51z wicks. I like them, but am a little tired of the mushrooming. I will try the CD & LX wicks. Thanks again!

sudsnwicks
What shape was the jar? Is it one of those short wide mouth ones? Or the taller skinny ones? If it's the latter, 51z might be too big.
anpross
It's the tall skinny one. I was going to order some of the 44-32-18z or the 44-24-18z to see how I liked those. My guess was that the wick is too big since my jars are getting pretty hot. Wouldn't want grandma to burn her hand trying to move it! sudsnwicks
For the skinny one, the 44z would work better for you. But save your 51z's, you can use them should you get the short wide one some day.
