thesoapbox
If I use the following recipe, what percentage sea salt would I add?Coconut Oil - 75%Shea Butter - 25%Is it equal to only the oil, or is it equal to the entire recipe?AngiThe Soap Box
Grumpy Girl
I've never been able to use sea salt, only UN-iodized table salt. I use it at 50% of my base oils.
dirtybirdsoaps
It would be equal to the coconut oil, and the shea. You can find table salt that is sea salt but you CANNOT use dead sea salt. I find that out when I ran out of sea salt.
doris
Total # of ounces of oils is how much salt you want: 100 oz of oils means 100 oz of salt. Also, along with dead sea salt, you CANNOT use epsom salt.

HelenW
Coconut Oil - 75%Shea Butter - 25%Is it equal to only the oil, or is it equal to the entire recipe?Total # of ounces of oils is how much salt you wantI use it at 50% of my base oils. Now, I am really confused. . When you say oils, are you also including butters in that statement. Sorry, to be so anal.I thought it was total amount of oils/butters used. ie. 33 oz. Coconut Oil and 11 oz. of Shea butter used, so 44 oz. of salt would be added. I use it at 50% of my base oils. Now that is interesting, does this make a hard bar? Also, just to clarify and make sure I understand this correctly, you would use 22 oz. of salt in your recipe. Also, does anyone superfat their Salt Bar Recipe and if so, what rate do you Superfat at? Grumpy Girl
Helen, if you want to use 25 oz of oils and butters, you want to add 25 oz of salt at a light trace. It's a 1/1 ratio. Salt is basically doubling your recipe.I superfat mine at 6% and the bar is hard as hell.
sudsnwicks
Salt is basically doubling your recipe. So let's say I normally do a 2-lb batch (32 oz of oils) and have a mold that fits exactly this batch size. If I wanted the salt bars to fit this mold, should I use 16 oz of oils and 16 oz of salt? Or should I use a little more oil since some of the salt would 'dissolve' into the mixture? Grumpy Girl
You'd use 16oz of salt and 16oz of oils. I wouldn't add extra... it doesn't dissolve like you think it does.

NyAshia
Why can't dead sea salt or epsom salt be used? Does it react negatively with the lye solution?
