cellydaniel
Hi everyone,I have a wonderful healing balm that I would like to market. I am just going to sell it as a skincare product not a drug. Is it true that I can't use the word "healing" on my salve name?Does anyone know where I can find more information on what words I can't use so that I won't break any FDA rules?Thank youCelly
arkangel
Try this pagehttp://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cos-218.htmlIt will describe what the fda considers a 'drug' and the difference between drugs and cosmetics

sockmonkey
If it's a "healing" balm it sure sounds like a drug.
soycrazy
So if it heals then you have to get approval from the FDA? What about pet products?
arkangel
I was going to attempt to create dog shampoo back when I sold my soaps, however, after all the hoops and regulations, I opted not to.If you make a claim with a pet shampoo, spray, salve etc, it is still regulated by the FDA. Further, if you make any claims of 'bug or flea repelling' or something similar, it is also regulated by the EPA. The EPA has a whole list of 'approved' natural ingredients you can use. If you stray from that list, you'll need to get an independent lab to test your product (LOTS of $$$) before submitting the results to the EPA for approval. Plus, my normal liability insurance at the time did not cover pet products and the amount was just too great an increase to add them to my line. Beth-VT
"Healing" is making a medical claim, and that falls under the FDA. It's also a big no-no to many insurance carriers. They won't cover your products if you make "medical claims". HTH.
