ruba
For those of you that use salt and/or sugar in your lye, does it turn a light yellow color?? I added the salt and the sugar to the water, made sure it was copletely dissolved and as soon as I added the sodium hydroxide it got cloudy (that's normal) but it also has a light yellow color to it. Any suggestion or experiences with this??TIA!!ETA: forgot to add that it is solar/sea salt and not table/iodized salt.
TexasBrat
Sometimes yes and sometimes no, I have no idea why it happens. Maybe someone else will have an answer.

CareBear
I don't add salt, but when I add sugar to the water it often turns yellow/brown as I add the lye. I assume it's caramelizing the sugar since I know if the sugar isn't completely dissolved it burns...
maryann
When I first started adding sugar to my soaps I had the same thing. So now to avoid this if my liquids are 12oz I'll measure out 10oz to mix w/ the lye, then I'll measure the other 2oz into a measuring cup and nuke it til it boils. At this point I add my sugar and mix til it dissolves. Once the sugar is completely dissolved, about 5-10 minutes I then add it into the lye/liquid mixture. HTH :smiley2:
Scented
When I add sugar, yes, it's always yellow. Haven't tried the salt thing as I use sodium hydroxide instead and I don't add that to the water/lye.
