pixxidusted Posted March 5, 2007 Share Posted March 5, 2007 Sorry if this is not the right area to post this. If so, let me know...Anyways, I am having a huge problem with my smelly jelly jars. I use the pretty bulb 12 oz jelly jars from NG. Was thrilled with them at first...especially thilled to use something other than quilted jelly jars(ughh!). I've recently noticed that the ones that I have made up in stock are not doing so well. The plastic liners that come with the jars are melting and dissolving! I'm soo pissed! I would assume that liners that come with these jars that are made to use for smelly jellies that will obviously contain FO, would be FO safe! My stock is gonna be dryig out, not to mention I have a show in the next week or so. I really do not want to sell damaged merchandise, nor do I want to discount my product because of this. I don't know what to do. I just emailed NG and am waiting for a response. It says right on their site that they aren't responsible blah blah blah... I just can not believe that they would knowingly sell a defective product. I also can not believe that I am the ONLY person this has ever happened to. Has anyone had this same problem? Any suggestions on what I should do about NG, or how I should temporarily line my jars?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Candle Man Posted March 5, 2007 Share Posted March 5, 2007 This is not NG'S fault intirely, they should put a warning about the seals. If FO comes in contact with the plastic it will damage or melt the plastic. NG is not the only supplier selling the plastic seals for smelly jelly's, alot of other candle suppliers sell them too.You best bet is to use the metal seals used for canning jars. Find the ones without any printing on them, they work great for seals. Here is a pic of the seal.BTW - This company list the seal as a metal lid, see attached pic.here is another pic.P.S. - If you don't already know FO will eat certain plastics, remove the finish off of funiture, remove paint and many other things. KristineG Posted March 5, 2007 Share Posted March 5, 2007 I've been using NG's smelly jelly jars for about 6 months and have never had a problem. In fact, I just ordered more. How high are you filling the jars? Are you using the crystals from NG? Are you using any types of "menthol" FO's? Are you wiping the lip of the jar inside and out with a paper towel before you put the lids on? As far as a temporary fix until you find something, the only thing I can think of is to remove all the lids and rubberband some saran wrap around them. One thing I do tell my customers is that when the fragrance needs refreshed, add a tsp of warm water to the jar and "stir". I specifically tell them not to shake the jars as some FO will melt the plastic liner and to make sure before replacing the plastic lid that they wipe the lip of the jar. moonrose64 Posted March 5, 2007 Share Posted March 5, 2007 Yes, It sounds like you have the jars to full.That was my mistake when I 1st starting making them. My Plastic melted too.Just don't make them any higher than the rim and you should be fine.Also for transporting them, I do what candle man showed you.I use the canning jar lids. That is a good idea to use the lids just for traveling to the shows, then putting the other lids back on. I just do not want to use canning jars instead of these lids. I love the flower cut out, and so do my customers. And the whole canning, jelly jar look isn't what our company is going for. What do you recommend for shipping them? We are working on a website, and will be shipping very soon. Do you think that if I just put on our warning label to wipe off lid and rim immediately to remove any FO that may have came into contact with the lid during shipping? KristineG Posted March 5, 2007 Share Posted March 5, 2007 I ship mine and include an insert to immediately clean the plastic part and wipe the jar lip. I haven't had any problems or complaints...yet (I might have just jinxed myself). Also, I fill mine just up to the base of the neck of the jar....know what I mean? For travel or shipping, use the metal canning lid under the daisy lid. FOs melt the plastic every time. I just included in my instructions to remove and discard the canning lid. Sag_77 Posted March 5, 2007 Share Posted March 5, 2007 I just screw the daisy lid on over the canning lid, as I make mine with warm/hot water then the lid seals down also. I have costumers that clean the lid set it under the jars and use it for when that add water. Never had a problem and have always used the canning lids. You use the canning seal with the Jelly Jar daisy lid, then you have no worries when you travel with them or when a customer carries them home.
