But I don't want links Mom!

Ok, am currently working building my website, and everywhere I read it says to link to other websites to help your ranking. But I don't want to! Besides metatags (which seem to be very quickly getting outdated) and search engine submisions, what can I do?

After researching this very subject all week, I've come up with several sites that I think will help traffic (some are free and some are not though) - but I could be wrong too lol I got these off a WAHM board, so alot of them are geared toward that market.

http://www.mommyshelperonline.com/advertise.html#website

http://www.internetbasedmoms.com/ads/budget.htm

http://www.wahmsearchengine.com/free_advertising.shtml

http://www.momsmarketonline.com/Advertising.html

http://www.theclassiclife.com/advertising.html

http://www.freeadvertisingforum.com/

I've also had my banner on the following sites that helped with traffic (they are more my market):

www.purplepinkandorange.com

www.lemmingcentral.com

Then there were these places as well that fit my market:

http://www.indieshopping.com/

http://theprettythings.net

http://www.thriftychick.com/

http://www.thepinkpuppy.com/

http://www.stylebakery.com/

www.craftrevolution.com

www.homeofthesampler.com

www.girlposse.com

http://www.theproductjunkie.com/

And this is just this week LOL

How much I hate this kind of ranking lol

I find google is impossible. I think they do everything to make you pay in order to appear on the first pages.

As you say, it's not logical put on your site links to similar site (because they would be competitors) or other sites regarding arts and crafts, My site is mine!!!

Just an example: if I google the exact name of my business, which is the title of my web pages.. I don't appear. If I do the same thing with other search engines I am *obviously* in the first page!

I think google is a lot of smoke in the eyes. The sad thing is that is the most used SE.

Just try, give your new site a few weeks and you will be on yahoo, msn, ouverture, but not in google.

Anyway, I read this about building a website:

-write a lot of text, not few lines, and put keywords on top of pages, because spiders read the firts lines.

-do not use frames

-use always alternative text for your images, using your keywords.

uhm that's all for now because I have to work, but if something else comes up to my mind I will answer you again.

HTH

Content, content, content, that's the key. To make links really work for you, you need *incoming* links of sites that are rated "higher" than you are, according to the search engine doing the ranking..

Instead of linking, maybe have some kind of informational pages, general information interesting to others, tips and techniques for using your product, like special gift wrapping techniques..

There's lots to SEO (search engine optimization) - the company I work for at my day job has 4-5 people expressly working on SEO for all our web pages, and it works. Most of it is geared to content, keywords, page names, lots of different things. It's not easy!

That was true for me too when my site first went live. You're right ... the other search engines find you and get you listed first. But in the end, Googlebots and spiders wormed their little way to my site and now I get far more hits from Google than, say, MSN (in the beginning, it was the opposite).

Just my experience.

well I hope it will be so, because this thing is driving me mad, so I decided that I won't consider google for now.
