silverm00n
Hi everyone,I've come to an end with most of the supplies that I bought, and before I purchase anymore I would like to get some opinions from you guys as to where I should look from here. I bough some sample waxes from Michaels and Hobby Lobby before, and I took notes, experimented with temps, scents and colors, and I want to try other types of waxes so I can find one that I'm happy with. I want to try beeswax, with no additives, and creamy wax, but the ones from the stores I mentioned are 1lbs for 10.99. That's extremely expensive! Should I just buy a couple lbs from there to try, and suck up the cost? because the online stores that I found start sales from 50lbs at a time. I don't want to be stuck with that much wax if I don't like it. Thanks for your input!

I believe a lot of their waxes are sold both by the 10lb slab, and by the case.
ladysj
Most suppliers that I've noticed offer by 10 or 11 pounds slabs. Online is much cheaper especially for colorants and fo's. As far as the wax I use HL's 40% off coupon they put in their online ad every other week.
sudsnwicks
Same here, I've also found most suppliers will sell by the 10 lb slab and you don't have to buy a whole case. In fact when I got their shipping estimate it was cheaper to buy a few slabs than a whole box.
silverm00n
thanks for the suggestions, I'm looking at peak and other online stores atm. I'm surprised that the FO's and the molds are half price there than in the stores! What a rip off these craft stores!
silverm00n
Ok I'm trying to decide which container and pillar wax I want to try and here is what I'm choosing from: EcoSoya Container Blend Advanced Soy, Ecosoya Pillar Blend, IGI 1260, IGI 4625 from Peaks. Does anyone work with these or would you recommend one over the other? I know the IGI 1260 is used for making chunk candles, since I have been attempting those with fail, I was wondering if anyone uses this wax for their chunks. This site is so helpful, I'm completely addicted and have learned so much already! Thank you!

SliverOfWax
Everybody has their own favorite wax, and for varied reasons. Ordering samples is the best way to go. Don't be afraid to blend waxes. Sometimes, your favorite will come from just throwing stuff in a pot and experimenting.

What a rip off these craft stores! When you look at the online suppliers and the craft stores, it's like the difference between wholesale and retail. The craft stores are meant for a hobbyist dabbling in one or two candles, while the online suppliers are for folks serious about making candles regularly. If you only made one or two candles and got tired of it, you'd still be better off getting a small amount of ingredients at the craft store. charity4candles
There are a couple of suppliers that will sell 1 lb. samples. That would be a great way for you to test different waxes without over-spending.

Fern
I'm not trying to turn you off to soy or anything, but if you are going to try soy, be sure to find a supplier who offers fragrance oils that will throw in soy. I believe KY Candle Supply does that. They have a nice selection, although not huge, but their fragrance oils are nice and strong. There's nothing more disappointing then making a candle only to find out that the particular FO you used will not throw in soy. One other thing, if your going to use soy, you're going to have to be patient, because a good deal of the time, they will have to cure for approximately 2 or 3 days or one to two weeks, depending on the scent. And some FO's will never throw in them. Soy candles can be great, but if you are just starting out, I think the above info will be of some help to you. Good luck! Vicky_CO
Sorry didn't mean to put all soy links but with the exception of Candlecocoon most paraffin sellers don't offer small quantities. But it looks like CC offer most of their waxes in small size for testing.
