hewells
What can you use instead of lard in a cp soap recipe? Vegetable shortening?? I am getting closer to attempting to make some just really didn't want to use an animal product if I didn't have to. TIA
Jcandleattic
Palm has close characteristics to lard. Just make sure you run your calculations through a lye calculator because the SAP values are most likely different.
Kaybee23
I agree with the palm, and it makes a very nice bar of soap. I use it in all of my recipes.
hewells
Thanks so much both of you...off to look up palm and run the recipe through the lye calc. I really appreciate your input.
mountainmadness
I would say palm or soybean. I have used both. The soybean takes a bit longer to cure but it makes for a nice bar of soap also.

Carol M
I agree with palm oil; if you are trying to use stuff you can buy locally to start, you can get the palm oil at the health food store. It is sold under the name of Spectrum shortening; that's the only way I've even seen it in stores. It is pricey (around $10 for less than 3#), but at least you could try it out. hewells
Thank you so much all of you, whether I get it locally or buy it from the net doesn't really matter. If I order it and don't like it I can always get rid of it.Thanks so much for the input!!!!
