Hi my name is Kim and I am new . My daughter and I have been making candles for about 6 mo we live in Florida so it is hot and humid ( really soft wax can be gooey ) I am looking for input on the types of wax with the best sent throw we have tried soy and Parafin ! What wads do you all recommend and why ! What about fragrances where do you get your favorites right now we are using candle science and they are fine I just don't know which ones to buy ! Lol I found out the hard way wicks matter I just picked one and it was huge when we got it and threw black smoke so I am investigating alittle before my next purchase ?

Well you probably did it right, but waxes vary and it depends on what you want to make. Do you want pillars or jars or votives or tars and what waxes have you tried?
It's almost like trying on a bra for lack of a better comparison. Obviously you want something that will throw well and be fairly easy to work with. Yet if you go jars, you'll have to deal with the gooey or rather greasiness that could be associated with it.

Then there are factors like do you care if it's all paraffin or do you want a parasoy or a straight soy type.

But wax isn't the only factor in making a candle with great throw. The fragrances used and the wick have some say in that too.

The other factor might be where you are getting your wax from or think you will get it from. Most companies will tell you a little more about their waxes and fragrance loads etc.

Don't know if that helps you some, but perhaps if you find some waxes that interest you then you could type in the numbers of it and run a search and see what comes up. Sometimes the search works and sometimes it doesn't, or that's how it used to be.

Hi Wax on

thank you for your post ! Right now I have golden brand 464 soy wax and IGI Harmony blend 4630  from candle science scents are from there as well both wax blends say they can hold up to a12% load  the p wax is very soft and will pit around the wick alittle I just save alittle to top it off and the soy does not pit gets some wired dipping on they top when you burn but for me it's all about th sent . The soy had an awesome cold throw but not so much when lit the par has a overall pretty good when cold and ok lit { this is the wax where my wicks were to big was throwing black smoke } going to try smaller wicks with this one next if the throw still weak I might try an additive or a diff wax ! Thank you for your advice all of it very helpful ?

If I'm not mistaken the 464 is pretty versatile and should be fine for you while you get your feet wet so to speak. I, though, will have to back out of helping you much more, because I'm not versed very well on soy. There are quite a few on this board though who are and you might look in other parts of the forum to get more info on your waxes.

Candle Science knows its stuff so also don't be shy about contacting them. You're getting quality FO there as well as wicks, wax and whatever else you might buy :)

Hello Kshaler,

It would help if you gave us this information:

1.  What wax have you tested?

2.  What jars did you use to test that wax.

3.  What wicks and size you used for that particular jar.

4.  Did you cure the candles and how long for?

5.  What fragrance oil did you use and where from?

6.  How much oil did you put in your wax?

7.  Pictures are a big help too.

I would suggest you read up all you can on the forum here what you can.  You will find all your answers of what you are looking for and more things you will learn that you haven't even asked about.  There is so much here, it is unbelievable and you will find that what works for one person does not mean it is going to work for the next.  Also Candle Science has videos on their site the proper way to make a candle and they also have an area there that gives you a guide point of where to start as far as selecting a certain wick size for a certain jar.

Also how did you arrive at deciding you wanted to try another wax?  Have you given time to test and test and test one particular wax with certain wicks.  When trying to figure out what wick goes in 1 jar, that could take weeks to just test 1 wick size and then you have to start over.  You know what I mean?

There are 3 sections on the board here that can keep you reading for weeks.....lol......no kidding that you can learn a lot from..

The general candle section

The vegetable wax section

The fragrance section

And use that search bar above.....for example you are asking which waxes are best to use?  Go and type in for example "favorite waxes".  I use that search bar for everything.

:)

Wow Trappeur Thank you so much for the info I just love this site ? I am so excited to learn !i am very familiar with the candle science site and have gone over all that videos inc it is what you can't learn from videos or I between the words of the books i.e. Experience which you guys have. Yay ! I will lookup those sections and search points you suggested . I am still testing those wax's I mentioned  still got about 15 pounds to go . I think you might be right about the wicks though it is possible it could be one of the issues with the pit by the wick thing .  I am going to order some new FO's and wicks and alittle vybar see what that gets me . Off to do more research ,

Somehow I missed your post that said you were trying 464 and 4630....sorry about that.  I don't know anything about 4630 so can't offer advice or findings on that wax.  Now i do use 464 and have for years and can only make my suggestions of my findings on that wax.  I can tell you that 464 wax is a very popular wax that many many people use and we can all give our input on what works best for us.  Actually I know there is a topic here that I believe Old Glory put up a while back about what fragrances worked in that wax and others chimed in here to list what fragrances worked for them also in that wax so enter in the search bar I think "464 fragrance oils that work" - I think....lol

I didn't mean to come off in my above post to tell you go look it up and search for your answers....you have to pick and choose words so no one takes offense, especially new members.  It's just that you see so many posts of new people who join and they all seem to ask the same questions; what is the best wax or what is the best fragrance, etc, etc when in actuality they need to really study and search and search and test, test, test and not just come and expect to find the right answers.   There are so many that have come here and expect to have their questions answered when they haven't given any time to testing their own product.......And it's unbelievable the ones who come here and have just started making candles this week and next week they are selling them! lol, lol...unbelievable....took me years before I felt comfortable enough to offer it to the public and to shops.....And I still learn every day......Everyone here who has been making candles or soaps for years, we all diligently were very sincere and jumped in and learned the hard way by testing.   To perfect a candle certainly takes time, sincerety, and non stop giving up.....you will be very frustrated at times and want to throw in the towel, but persistance to keep moving forward if you truly want to perfect this craft which has to be a safe craft will be so rewarding in the end and when you find that perfect wick for that jar with a sweet smelling candle you will feel like you just hit the lotto.

The only advice that I could offer is don't go crazy and have so many waxes in front of you to test....Like Wax on said, decide what type candle you want to make and then make your choice of wax you would like to try.  Baby steps ......one thing at a time....and you certainly can't rush things.

Good luck to you.....it's fun isn't it?

Hi Trappeur I was not even close to offended ? I am a newbie and took your advise , well I had already been on the FO one . I will try to sale them soo but at a very low price and at our dive shop lol ! I have been handing out test candles to all my friends like candy and they love them but baby steps . I am happy with the waxes I am testing right now and will keep using them for now and maybe just keep testing to see what affects the throw . Going to go search for that one post you mentioned about scents in the 464 . No worries this is exciting to me to have found a blog where people share my love for this hobby ( still just a fun hobby to me ) I love it ! Thank You so much for your opinion ?
