  1. I bought some IGI 4794 and want to try and make some candles today. My questions is does the temperature of the room matter a lot. The room I have to make them in the temp is about 69-70. Joy:confused:
  2. I am pretty new to all of this and was wondering after reading about para/soy blend. When you blend these two waxes how do you know what temp. to heat the wax to and when to add the fo? I just bought some para wax and have soy and have never used either one. I would really appreciate some help please.
  3. I have made a bunch of tarts out of tortise palm container wax from Candle Science using there FO's. I use 1oz/lb of wax. What is happening is they smell good for 1 tea light burn which is about 4 hours. The next day when I light them again after a little while they start to smell like they are burnt. My son asked me tonight what was burning and it was my tart. Does anybody have an idea as to why I am having this problem. It has occurred with several different FO's. It has already happened with the first burn with my coffee scent, that one was really stinky it upset my stomach! I would appreciate any advice. Thanks, Joy:confused:
  4. Thanks for replying I can't believe no one else on this forum never tried aztec.
  5. Hi everybody!!:undecided I would like to try a fragrance from Aztec but I am not sure if they have been tested for soy and palm waxes. I am using palm. If anybody knows how their FO work in palm could you please let me know.:smiley2: Thanks, Joy

    storing tarts

What are the best containers to store your tarts in if you are just keeping them for your own use at home? I bought a bunch of metal tins but don't know if this is the best way? Any good suggestions? Joy:smiley2:
  7. thanks I will give it a look,I don't know about all of these things I guess I should do more clicking on everything and seeing what it is for!
  8. the 4" diameter one did not get a really good full melt pool this time. A little wax is one the sides, I am hoping after the 3rd burn tonight it might be better. I am also testing a 2.5" diameter and this one had a full melt pool in under 2 hours. If I go with a smaller csn wick than an 11 I will get a lot of wax build up on the sides of the jar. Does this mean I should just try a completely different brand of wick. I bought some LX but don't know what size to start with. Can you compare sizes of wicks but just holding them together and looking at them? Thanks, Joy
  9. I actually did not get a full melt pool this time. It kind of is sticking on the sides a bit. I was hoping after I light for the 3rd time that I might get one. I am also testing a 2.5 inch diameter container with a csn11 wick and I got a full melt pool in a little under 2 hours but there is just a little wax on one part of the jar.
  10. Thanks for replying I was hoping some others would too, I thought that was the whole point of this forum. I called Candle and supplies yesterday and asked to speak to somebody who had experience making candles. She told me something totally different which I questioned in my mind. She said that the depth of my melt pool should be 1/2 inch (seems very deep to me) and also that if I got 23 hours out of a 16 oz. candle I was doing just fine. I thought too that this was not long enough for that size candle. So why won't anybody else please help me out here! Thanks
  11. I also tried rrds in a 2.5 inch jar but like you said they burned very fast and my jar too got very hot. I just ordered some lx wicks and am going to try with them also. I just think that the wax looks so beautiful in the jars I want to get this down right so I can make them and give them as gifts. Joy
  12. The flames kind of danced around but were not bad. I am now trying the another 4" apoth jar with csn5's. I started the first burn tonight for 4 hours and the melt pool got 2/3 of the way. I will try again tomorrow. I read the with palm sometimes the first burn might not look that great but that the 2nd burn will sometimes catch up and then get the wax the is on the sides of you container. I also wicked the same size with a csn 14 but after 4 hours it did not look that great but again I will test it tomorrow and maybe it will get better.
  13. Please can somebody help a newbie know what to look for when test burning your candles. I have a 4" diameter container filled with glass glow palm (2lbs wax & 1.8oz cranberry chutney FO) I wicked it with 2 csn 7's and honestly do not know what to look for in a test burn. I know you have to look at the melt pool but how soon should you have a full one for my size container? Also how deep is it suppose to be and what about the flame? My container holds 16 oz. of wax and shouldn't that burn for a long time with the right size wick. How long is a long time for 16 oz.? I know these are a lot of questions but until I know what specific things to look for I will no how good my candle is. Mine candle burned up in 23 hours. I burned it 5 different times. Thanks so much for your help!:undecided
  14. Hi Debbie, I was just going to ask a question similar to yours. I am new also to candle making and am using glass glow from candle science. I just started test burning a 4" diameter container. I double wicked the first time and used to csn 7's. It worked and they burned to the side after 3.5 hours. It just seems that they burn too fast. I don't know how you are suppose to determine how fast or long your candle should last either. This one here that I am talking about burned for a total of 24 hours. That I think is not long enough for a 16 oz candle. I also used 2 lbs of wax plus 1.8 oz cranberry chutney FO. I hope you can get it figured out as I know how frusturating it can be! Joy
  15. Thanks for the tip! I do not know much of anything.
  16. I was hoping to hear from you Stella! You mentioned that you did 4" soy, did you double wick? Also the wick you suggested to me for my 4" palm did you mean try double wicking the CDN20 or 22? I don't understand why some people say that to save time and wax if your wick is not burning right to just blow it out and pull it out with pliers and insert another wick. First of all like you said how do you know if it is burning good until you let it burn all the way down. I tried the plier thing once and the wick would not come out and my whole candle slid out of my jelly jar and then cracked. I valve your opinion so what do you think that using 1.8 oz of oil/2lbs of palm wax could make such a big difference in smelling a scent than if you used 2 oz/ 2lb. of wax?
  17. I made a bunch of Cranberry Chutney tarts using my palm wax. I brought one to work to have a friend test, the scent was so strong it came all the way down the hall. My husband took one to work for the same reason, he called and you could not smell it unless you put your nose right on top of it. How can this be? Is it possible? Thanks, Joy
  18. I was wondering when you need to double wick. I am using palm wax and a 4" diameter container. I have a lot of Yankee candles that size and none of them have ever been double wicked. I have soy candles from Integrity Candles (which by the way are really wonderful and smell great) and they are also 4" in diameter and they are all double wicked. Does it depend on the type of wax you are using? I like the larger 4 inch container and would like to be able to get this down so I can make them with some success. I am using the glass glow palm wax if that makes a difference. Also what do you think is the best wick for palm? I read so many threads I get confused. Joy
  19. Thank you for your input every little bit helps even though I get totally confused!!
  20. I just want to say thanks to your replies, I really do appreciate your help.:smiley2:
  21. Oh yes it is little ol me again. I just read that you should not add fragrance oil right until you are ready to pour. With my palm wax directions it says to heat to 200 then add FO and dye, cool to between 185-195 and then pour. Does it really make such a difference? They said that if you add the FO when it is hotter that some of it will be lost. With my soy wax directions that came with the kit it also says to heat waX to between 160-180, add FO & dye and when temp comes down to between 160 -140 pour. This kind of confuses me, so could I just heat it to 160 add the dye and FO and then pour right away? THANK YOU AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR SUGGESTIONS IN ADVANCE I BET YOU ARE GETTING TIRED OF SEEING MY POSTS:undecided :undecided
  22. Well thank you everybody that answered my question. I think I understand now. Hopefully I will be able to get this candle wicking business down sooner or later.:smiley2:
