  1. I have started making tarts with palm wax and really love them! I was wondering if any of you might know where I can find a large variety of them: flowers, sea shells, leaves, holiday, etc. I also wanted to know if rubber molds will hold up as well as silicone. Thanks for all of your help!
  2. I have not used soy wax, but I do use palm wax, mainly the glass glow, which is used for containers. I get mine from Candle Science and from Peaks, and as far as I can tell they are the same wax. I do not notice a difference from one batch to the next. It does take dye well. I use between 5-6% FO. They also have a frost palm, which does make a nice candle, but I just like the look of the glass glow better. Hope that this helps!
  3. Thank you Jess05! I just experimented with several waxes. I tried the Feather palm wax from Candle Science. It did not do well, as it left tiny holes in most of them. I had some palm wax left over from let-it-shine, that I don't use anymore, but thought I would give it a try. They turned out pretty good, but they left a lot of stuff in the molds, next I did glass glow. I used a little over 2oz. of FO. The glass glow turned out great. I was impressed that it crystalized on the top and marbled on the bottom. I actually made extra so I could try some clam shells. They, too turned out great. I was very excited that they turned out as well as they did. Again, thank you for your input. Debbie
  4. I would like to make some tarts using the wilton silicone molds. I have got glass glow and frost palm and also have the pillar palm in star burst and feather. The molds that I have are the little daisy molds and the heart molds and there are 24 to each mold. How much fo should I try? I have read that some use 1oz per lb., but when I make my container glass glow, I only use 5%. If I use too much will I have droplets of fo on top of the tarts?
  5. I have some that are a little discolored, not real noticeable, but I did Texas Bluebonnet and Lavender, and they both were horribly discolored. I would not like it if I bought a candle and it discolored that bad. I really don't want to have a customer bringing the candle back because it discolored, but that's just me. :cheesy2:
  6. I don't know if this is going to help, because I use palm wax. But I do get an ugly melt pool with some scents, if I make a light colored candle. I made a lavender scent using a pale lavender color, the melt pool was ugly. I made the candle again in a darker color and it helped tremendously. I believe it is the combination of fo and the wick. I have tried the color chips vs liquid and it did not make any difference. For me, it was all about the fo. Hope this helps!
  7. I have used both Peak's and Candle Science and see no difference in them. I just ordered some from Candle Science because of the price difference. I hope it gets here soooon!
  8. I went to wally world today and did not see the glade candle there, a little surprised. The glade candle is on the isle with all of the air fresheners, and it says on there that it is 97% natural. Also, I did not see any palm wax candles or anything that looked like them. Probably, just a matter of time. Hello, to my fellow Texan!
  9. Oh, my gosh Mary, did I stick my foot in my mouth or what? I have probably offended every person from Georgia that is on this board. I am just so used to how we say it, I just thought she was trying to over do it! I am sorry!! We have a store called HEB that is a huge grocery store in TX. They try to have super stores like Wally World. This is where I saw the Glade candle for the first time last week. But our town is not very big, so some times it makes it way down here a little slower.
  10. The guy is 87 yrs old. My sons tell me he is always coming in grumpy and in a bad mood. I guess I should not be surprised at his comments of my candles.
  11. I was at wally world looking at there candles too! I told this lady I made palm wax candles and her retort was, so what are you doing here? Just snooping! I always like to look and see who has come out with a new candle with their name on it, Paula Dean! I used to like to watch her cooking show, but her over pronunciation of "Yall" really got on my nerves. I'm from Texas, and trust me, we do not say "Yall" the way she does. I know she is from Georgia, but I don't even think they do it either.
  12. Welcome to the board, you are going to meet a lot of wonderful people here! Debbie:wave::wave:
  13. Was it a container or pillar? Did it give any kind of description at all as to what it might be made out of? I usually go to wally world on Friday when I grocery shop for my Mom, so I'll see if ours has anything.Debbie
  14. I was at the grocery store today and saw that Glade has come out with an all soy candle. On the jar it says that it is 97% natural. I can not tell you how much it was, though. Just wondered if anyone had seen them. I go to the grocery store every Saturday and did not see them last week, so they must have gotten them in some time this week. I was not crazy about the scents that they had, either. I don't make soy candles, only palm wax containers, so I'm waiting for the day palm wax containers made in China will be on every store shelf! Debbie
  15. Stella, Thank you! How did you get so smart? I can only hope that one day I will know at least half of what you know about palm wax. Debbie :cheesy2:
  16. I know before I started making candles, I really did not know how to burn a candle correctly. I knew the safety part: don't burn by curtains, don't throw matches into the container, etc. And yes, never did I burn a candle correctly, that said, as long as it smelled good, I really did not care that the ceiling fan was on and causing a lot of hang up on one side. I was a big Yankee candle person and those candles are not cheap! Never once did I entertain the thought of taking a candle back and saying it did not burn right. The only thing I have to worry about is loosing a customer to our health food store because I would not take a candle back. Like every other small business, times are tough and we need each and every customer!
  17. I have instructions that are sitting right by the candles, and if I am not there I tell all of our employees to make sure everyone gets instructions. I explain about what palm wax is and give not just basic instructions, but how to get the best burn out of their new candle. I feel like I put so much time into each and every candle, that I want to follow them home and make sure they burn it correctly so they can get as much enjoyment out of it as I did in making it! Also one of my sons does candle testing for me, so this way when I'm not there, he can give instructions on how to burn it. This man refused to listen or even take the printed instructions. Go figure!
  18. I'm sure some of you have gone thru this already, and this would have been comical if it had not been dangerous. We own a health food store that I am making the candles for. Man comes in, buys candle. Man brings back candle a month later, says it doesn't burn right. My son looks at candle, says did you follow burning instructions, man says I don't need instructions, I know how to burn a candle. Man lights candle with match throws match into candle container. Man lets it burn for about 30 min. while he drinks his coffee (it's a 4" candle) Man puts lid on jar to put out candle (lots of soot on jar!) Lots of wax left on one side of the jar. But Man does not need instructions, because he knows how to burn a candle! Candlemaker runs out of room screaming!
  19. Hi, Stella! Thank you very much for your valuable input!! I already carry the larger size jar just like this little bitty one and wanted to give customers an option on sizes. Like I said I never have burned a candle this small even when I would buy candles, so I had no idea what to expect. I was so excited when I saw how it was burning, that I thought I would just let it go and see what would happen. This one had such a tiny melt pool to it and the jar was barely warm, but then it has that thin shell on it, so there was some insulation to keep it from getting hot. I'm sure I will probably be going up another wick size. Stella, I know you make palm wax candles, do you have some that discolor after you burn them for a while? I did not have this problem with dark colors for winter, but for spring and summer I would like to make some light colored candles. After my marathon burn with my small candle, I am already seeing it a tiny bit. Just wondering! Also, Stella, I want to thank you for the suggestion of the silicone for attaching the wicks. It now has gotten to every time I am test burning I have wicks detaching from the bottom of the jar. Just wanted to thank you again. :yay::yay:Debbie
  20. I made one yesterday using the cd 7. While I was making candles today, thought I would go ahead and burn it. ( I know I should have waited!) I burned it for about 2 1/2 hrs and there was a tiny mushroom, not bad at all, but went ahead and trimmed it and re-lit. I burned it for a total of 6 hours. It is leaving a little bit of a shell and I will see if it will eventually burn off, if not I will try a cd 8. It is burning really well, the flame is good with a very small melt pool. I've never burned a small jar, so I don't know how deep of a melt pool it can get. All in all I was very happy with it. It does have a little bit of discoloration, not too bad. I don't know if it was the long burn or if too much FO. I did use 3%. It also had a wonderful HT. I used Blue Skies from Aroma Haven. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! Debbie
  21. I have tried it and the HT and the CT are really good. I like the pattern that glass glow has a little better than the frosted palm, but they both are pretty waxes. Debbie
  22. I have used the cd 4 and 5 with I think too much hang up. I skipped to the cd 7 and am trying it. I also cut back the FO to 3%. I have never made anything this small. I have these same jars in the next size up using 2 cd 6 wicks, with 5% FO. They burn great! Now trying to learn to wick smaller jars with one wick. I'm sorry that I did not give enough info earlier!! Debbie :smiley2:
  23. I have 2 jars I am having a hard time wicking. One jar is a 3 1/4 oz wisper jar that is 2" by 2". The other is a 4 1/2 oz. vibe jar that is 2 1/4" by 3". I am using glass glow from candle science. I am using 5% FO, is this too much to be using for this small of jar? I have cd wick sizes in 4,5,6,7 & 8. Thanking you in advance! Debbie
