  1. Hi, Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas or a Happy Hanukkah (well you'd still be having the HH)! I know I've read that lavender often needs a wick up from the usual for a particular wax/jar/FO. Vanilla usually falls in that category too, but i found that CS vanilla really seems fine with my "normal" wick. i'm wondering if anyone can tell me their experience with lavender from CS? TIA, Ei
  2. hey leisa, just happened to be on and saw your post. that's great! i doubt if i'll ever add paraffin, i'm more inclined (down the line) to try diff wicks or maybe even diff soy. i have some cb135 some gb444, some enchanted lites (i think that's the name) and maybe even some cb advanced. i got these waxes in the beginning, a number of months back, i made one or two candles with cb135, then tried the 464 and was hooked. but right now i am going to stick to 464 and test the fragrances i already have. well, i guess i could make some tarts,,,, uh oh, there i go again, off on a tangent. NO! i must behave. i am burning the buttered rum right now, tried a bigger wick. still seems like a light throw, but then again, i tend to compare everything to the pumpkin souffle!! i can't wait to burn the carmelized pralines, it smell awesome. hope you emily-assisted lucky streak continues! eileen
  3. i'm pretty new to all this, but i will pass along something from my own experience. i know now for sure that not every fragrance oil may need the wax heated to 185, but when you hit one that does (and there's no way to tell ahead of time) it's definitely not a good thing. recently i poured some candles one evening, and when i looked at the candles the next morning they were a mess - oil seeping out everywhere. i had done EVERYTHING THE SAME, even heated to 185, but then remembered reading something that top (topofmurrayhill) had posted about the adding of room temp oil lowering the overall temp of the wax and possibly casuing a problem. so i dug the wax out and reheated to 185, maybe even 190, stirred and stirred, repoured and they were fine. then i did another batch, kicked the presto pot up for just a very short time after i added that oil to the 185 degree wax, and made sure the temp stayed at 185 or a bit more. again, beautiful results. so you may be fine for a while, even a long while, with a lower wax temp. but there will come a day, if you continue this pursuit, when you hit one of those fragrance oils that needs that higher temp to work. once was enough for me! making soy candles is fun, it's addictive, but there are times when it can be very frustrating as well. this is a way to eliminate one problem. hth, eileen
  4. hi 8-GRAN-ONES, i sent you a PM (about 12/11/1952) happy b'day!! :yay: :yay: also, thanks for the info on the buttered rum (and the other fragrances), there is still hope. did you find you had to wick up? i went up one, from eco 12 to eco 14. i'm hoping that is enuf. does it need muc of a cure time? i find most fragrances don't need a long cure in 464, tho the CS frankincense and myrrh really popped after about 10 days. seems the CS sp. wassail also fits in that category. leisa, NOW i have to pour a mulberry tester, since i have a sample from CS. you have me drooling! our heat was off overnite, so now i have to wait for it to warm up before i do anything. the candle gremlins seem to be out in full force! do you all feel that i might actually be losing hot throw by using 9% FO instead of 6% (candle science oils)? thanks again to all of you for sharing and helping! eileen
  5. yes, i think the mistletoe is about the strongest of all i've tested so far, and the pumpkin souffle, of the ones i've tried. the 4 ounce jj with mistletoe is totally amazing. i had posted a question about the spiced wassail, but didn't get any "takers" to answer me. however, my granddaughter is testing it for me and just told me it's really nice, very good throw. she's been testing for me for a while, but with finals at college, hasn't been doing as much and i really MISS her help! again, thanks for your encouragement and advice, i really appreciated it. i've been reading your 50/50 posts, but of course just reading, since i have nothing to input on that! i know what you mean about the place smelling good. my daughter says since i started doing candles it always smells great in here. nice to know, since we have 2 dogs and 3 cats. another bonus of candle making! have fun!
  6. thanks emily! i am waiting for the mac apple to cool. next is wildberry mouse. i am trying one wick down on some that i've already tested that burned a little hot, just a tad, and a little fast for me. with the smaller wick i seem to be losing some throw. of COURSE, it could be my nose again, or rather still. the pumpkin souffle seems to be doing ok with the ECO12 down from a 14. again, i'm still using 9%, wish i could get up the nerve to cut to 6%, bt since i originally started (you may remember) at 12%, even the 9% makes me nervous. i want to knock them out with the throw! so leisa, any more suggestions on "CS no nos in 464", if there are any more? the apple smells wonderful, even with my head cold. thanks again for all your help!!! i hopw soy catches on for you eventually. eileen
  7. it's ok, i sure understand trying to get help! i too will not give up the wax, i love it. i am staying with just soy, so can't try the mixes. i know the CS frankincense and myrrh needs a pretty long cure time (long for 464 that is), but it's worth the wait, it's wonderful. right now i'm pouring some testers for ME. carmelized pralines, macintosh apple, maybe wildberry mouse. have you, leisa and emily, come across any other CS fragrances that don't throw in 464? i am so tapped out money wise i'm trying to avoid things that are doomed from the start! i'll post how the new buttered rum throws, i will probably try it tomorrow (2 day wait). hope that won't be too soon. guess i won't even try to banana nut bread,!! thanks for any words of wisdom! eileen
  8. hi leisa, if no one on the forum can help, try calling CS. i called yesterday and got some really helpful info about the buttered rum FO. at that point my wick was starting to get smaller and i knew i had a problem. that was after about 4 hrs burn time. today i can smell some, but i had to do another candle with the buttered rum and i guess i should wait a couple days to test it. pain, since i really want it to be good, and i wish now i hadn't said yes to my friend! meanwile, i have some of their banana nut FO, maybe i'll pour a tester later. someone here must have some help for both of us?? anyone?? if you do call CS, i'd love to know if they were able to give you any advice. ei
  9. Hi, I am testing CS buttered rum (last minute request from a friend) and i have a really bad head cold, can't smell or taste. all i can tell about my coffee this morning is that it is hot and sweet, and it will keep me from getting that terrible caffeine withdrawal headache! any 464 users out there who can help me? i'm using my "most fragrances throw well with this combo" and i didn't find anything about wicking up, but also didn't find anything specifically about this FO in 464. thanks! ei
  10. hi, i recently started playing with patchouli, what a pain to wick! about what percent of patch do you mix with your other FOs, or does it vary a lot? i'd love to get some of that 60's smell mixed in with other fragrances. any help is appreciated! thanks! ei
  11. Hi Stella, As i wrote ''I'm afraid if I peak and/or try to feel the glass, and it's too soon, it will mess them up". Judging by your response, it's ok to uncover and touch the glass, then recover if it's still warm. Thanks! Ei
  12. I've covered a few candles while cooling and had good results (no wet spots), but that has been when I was not in any rush and left them for over a day before I uncovered. I know it will depend on room temp, how many candles, etc. i don't want to uncover too soon, but i have limited work space. I'm afraid if I peak and/or try to feel the glass, and it's too soon, it will mess them up. right now i have 2 roly polys under a small box. they are 3 inch diameter at the top, about 8 ounces each (9 ounces liqud wt.). I poured them around midnight, it's now 9:30 am. It's about 72 in the room. I have searched thru the veggie wax candle forum using various words i thought might help, but didn't find anything about time lengths. Can anyone give me a starting point? TIA! Eileen
  13. hi judy, that's exactly what i was hoping to hear. it's great to hear from someone who doesn't wait too long before pouring. i've been using the GE silicone II. i was more concerned about the fumes (and the squish) affecting the candle than hurting me.... LOL. thanks for answering and thank you for your service! ei
  14. Thanks JKG, I was going to write and try to explain, but unless a person reads the entire post, it sometimes just becomes an exercise in frustration, so i decided to let it go. I am glad you caught it and wrote, thank you! Danielle, i think i did see a post you wrote about that, now that you said it again, it jogged my memory, which is totally OVERFLOWING at this point, i have read and searched so much about "all things candle"! I can't find the post now. maybe you didn't originate the question, or maybe i am just going blind from all the reading! doesn't help that my full time job also requires constant attention to computer screens as well! What you say makes sense, but i'm not sure if it would apply to the first (near the top of the glass) burn? i guess it is still a bit of a confined space, tho only slightly, so it could still be the answer. i wonder of any of the more experienced chandlers will respond?? i am doing another burn right now, curious how it will go. Thank you both!!! Have a great Thanksgiving!
  15. the first time this happened i thought i made a mistake with the wicks, mixing them up. but now it's happening again with another fragrance. i'm burning a cranberry marmalade, 9% in 464 wax in a 3 inch diameter roly poly. the eco 10 is burning faster than the eco 12, i think i may try an 8, but this is the first burn so it's hard to tell. both are burning nicely so far. it's been 3 hours and i have a FMP with the 10, just barely 1/4" deep. the 12 is not quite full yet, and not as deep. any ideas?? TIA! ei
  16. hi carrie and stella! yes carrie, for anchoring the wick. i want my candles to be as safe as possible and this seems a good choice for securing the wicks. well i waited the 24 hours so i'm sure i was fine. i would just like to know if what i read is still what people do. sometimes over the course of time different things come to light. i guess i will just try to always give myself a 24 hr window when i can. thanks!:smiley2: ei
  17. hi, i searched on silicone and read everything out there, but most of the posts were from a while ago. i'd just like the up-to-date take on silicone and wicks. i bought the GE siliconeII and the loctite silicone. three questions: how long do you wait after you set the wick? i just wicked a few jars and would like to pour tonite, but can wait if i must. i noticed some people said they pour as soon as an hour later, was wondering if that still holds. is it ok if some of the silicone squishes out from under the wick? i read a post from someone that said they pretty much slathered it on and it was ok if it squished out. still true? finally, top mentioned a concern about the curing process releasing fumes, etc. and possibly being a problem. several people said it was not a concern. has that changed? thanks, ei
  18. The Mistletoe is fantastic. My hubby doesn't like candles much. When he smelled the Mistletoe he said it brought back a flood of memories. First thing he said when he walked in was "it smells like Christmas in here". I knew right then I had a winner! The F&M is really nice, tho my friend says it doesn't smell like what she knows as F&M. I really like it tho, and my daughter says it's really nice. It's a clean smell, yet something else too, can't put my finger on it, I know these weren't in your original question, but Luci (i think?) mentioned having bought them but not tried them yet, so I thought I'd chime in. Ei
  19. I am just trying to find out if it's me-my nose that is- or if this really doesn't throw well in 464? any of you 464 users able to help me out? Thanx, Ei
  20. maybe that particular brand of vanilla FO doesn't throw well in 464. i'm new to soy candles, but i can definitely vouch for CS very vanilla in the 464. i use 9% and it is kickin'! i love it so much i didn't even think of testing any other vanilla. if you check the CS website, you'll see the reviews of the fragrance, and if you search the fragrance forum here, you'll also find it's a favorite of many. HTH, ei
  21. Thank you ALL for your replies. Do most of you use 6% FO load? That seem to be the most common. Just trying to decide on a middle ground and the amount of FO will definitely make a difference. Kimberly, from the CS wick guide (and I know most people think the sizes they recommend are on the large side) it looks like the 464 and the C3 are similar at the 3" container size, of course they recommend ECO for both, but it helps with the translation to LX. BTW, that looks llike a whole lot more than 2rottndogs in your avatar!! Ronnie, the picture at the top of your website is really pretty. Thank you all again, I will pour some testers tomorrow. Eileen
  22. Elliecat, thanks for the suggestions. Jeana, depending on the oil, an ECO 12 or 14 in the Status jars. The 12 with CS Pumpkin lSouffle eaves a bit thicker coat than I like, so I will probably go with the 14 for that. The 12 seems good for the Very Vanilla from CS. The Roly Poly is a bit harder because of the increase in width, but so far the same wicks seem to bbe working. I have some hangup, but now that I'm on the bottom third of the container, and it's starting to catch up. Thanks for answering. Ei
  23. I've been using ECO wicks in my 464, but had started out using LX (didn't know much) and got some pretty good results, tho after reading on this forum, I know my burns were too hot. I still have a lot of them, silly me I bought too many to start. I know I've read posts on this forum from people who use LX wicks in 464 and are happy with them. I tried searching on LX and the search engine says there are no matches, but I know there are. I tried looking thru posts again, but I've read SO much, and I have no idea where I saw it. Can someone please give a me starting point for a 3 inch status container and a 3 inch roly poly type? I use 9% FO load, tho I know most use less. Thanks!
  24. Hi Dana, I thought I had the answer to your problem till I reread your original post! I'm going to leave this here anyway, it may still be helpful to someone..... I bought an embossing heat tool at AC Moore (acmoore.com). I'm not sure if AC Moore is nationwide, but I'm sure other craft stores carry it. The one I bought is made by Nicole, website is nicolecrafts.com. You can't buy diirectly from there, but you can put in your ZIP code and it will tell you stores in your area that carry Nicole products. It was $27 or $28 in AC Moore and I had a 50% off coupon! I just used it for the first time on a Hot Buttered Rum candle that I poured last nite and it did a great job in a few seconds! From what I have read, it's very important to wait a day before you try to fix the tops, otherwise they get worse. I think you might also be able to heat your jars with it, tho I haven't tried that yet (will tonite) and I would guess you have to be careful not to get them too hot. Ei
