  1. I also have this issue with cinnamon stix and some citrus FO's. The only FO that didn't burn this way was one from Candlewealth. When I first started making candles back in 2006, I joined through them and realized soon after that their prices were crazy, but their FO's were really really nice. Very pure and strong. Their Candy Cane was wonderful and never smelled of fuel. I could use any wax, wick, and it didn't matter. I LOVE Bert's Oils, but for some reason this one has that nasty smell when burned with a flame, but like I mentioned earlier it smells fantastic in my tart burner. I am going to try everything that was advised on the board once I buy more wax. Hopefully I can figure this out.
  2. Doggonit.....just placed on order with JBN. Oh well. I have a craft show this weekend so hopefully I do well there and can place another order on Monday so I can get the sample pack. I did notice that as it burned the fuel smell got better. So maybe I should just use less and add some vanilla. Anyone have any idea how much vanilla to add?? Also is there a certain vanilla people use for mixing. There are sooo many vanilla scents, I wouldn't know where to start. Here are my options: Mexican Vanilla-JBN Creme Brule-JBN Old Fashion Sugar Cookies-Bert's French Vanilla-Bert's Vanilla Bomb-Just Scents
  3. Great info!! I think I do need to wick up....the 10 still hasn't reached FMP and is started to tunnel. Unfortunately I didn't order any #8's....so if the 12 doesn't work, I'll order some #8's to see if that will do the trick. I don't use any dye in my candles or tarts so it's not that....but thanks for trying:sad2: The MAC apple I am burning is just wonderful....using a 10, nice small flame, great throw....just now reaching FMP and burning beautifully. Dnj, I may just have to sell tarts in Candy cane for now or wickless candles until I get this figured out. I am determined. It's just a great scent for Christmas....the kids LOVE IT!!! I can't wait to hear of your results. I wonder why some of us are having problems but some report great HT?? Doesn't make sense. Maybe its just our sniffers???
  4. We have learned that people don't like to spend more than 5 or 10 bucks on candles so we only take tarts and candles ranging from 1-15 dollars and we make up small gift baskets and really play up our display with vibrant colors. We sell a TON of tarts and tart warmers. I do sell some candles, but like I said people just don't wanna pay any more than 10 bucks if that for a candle. We sell plug in burners from levine gifts and punched tin from Colonial Tin...those are BIG sellers. People will pay up to 25.00 for those. We have found that for these bigger sales, its important to accept Credit Cards. It's scary accepting checks. We sell our tarts for 1 buck each or 6 for 5.00. So we pretty much sell 5 dollar items throughout the day and a TON of warmers. If we make 500.00 bucks we are pretty happy.
  5. Good Idea......I'll have a neighbor burn it. I am starting to smell a little candy cane, but it's so overpowered by the fuel smell. Last year when I tried this I was using 402, medium cotton wick and no additives and had same problem. Can't remember what jar I used though?? I think a JJ but not 100%. Maybe its just me, I have a super strong sniffer. I'm burning MAC apple in my sons room and it is FABULOUS!!! Only cured 24 hours.
  6. Stella, The jar is 2.75" in Diameter.....I thought of wicking up. I'll try that next. Maybe more cure time to let each component of the oil saturate the wax??? Just guessing... I've heard it helps to add vanilla, but it already has some notes of vanilla that are very nice OOB and when burning tarts.
  7. Ok, so I got my order from Bert's of Candy Cane. FO. I made tarts and candles. Burned the tart yesterday and WOW!!!! It is amazing, I could smell it throughout my entire house. It smells soooooo good! . Not too peperminty, kinda creamy. Just like a candy cane. So I let the candle cure for 2 days....and I am still getting that awful fuel smell!!!! I used GB 444, with 1 tsp pp USA, 1 oz FO PP, CDN wick #10, with 7.5 oz Maddison jar. I am stumped. Please Help! I know its not the FO! My son wants to be a Chemist when he grows up, maybe he'll figure this stuff out for me in my later years.......He's only 9 now, so I've got a while.
  8. Was wondering the same thing. I searched for it as well. I am also wondering about FO's too. I have heard it's a year, and I've also heard that they don't go bad. I have so many that are 2 or 3 years old and don't know if I should just pitch them?? In my experience, our candles smell awesome after a year. Especially those that have lids. Tarts are the same as long as they are sealed. I notice if I burn an old tart from last year that was left out (just in baggie, or not in baggie at all) it has little to no scent throw, but if I burn a tart that has been in its baggie and in a sealed bin...the throw is awesome! :smiley2:So maybe as long as they are sealed or have a lid...they will be ok...not 100% sure though.
  9. Mistletoe: At Wix End Oregon Pine Needle: The Candle Source Christmas Cabin: Natures Garden All have great HT in Palm Wax Tarts and soy wax.
  10. Ditto on The Candle Source Pink Sugar....it is wonderful. Most of their scents are fantastic. I use them alot!
  11. These are so adorable. How do they do at holding in frangrance?
  12. I order mine from The candle Source in Ohio. You want to order the 2x3 baggie. They have great pricing. I put mine in bags and then a small shoe box sized clear bin with a label to keep them smelling good and fresh. Mine still give off great HT after a year! I also get my tart molds from them and they are also super cheap. They some good FO's as well. Sugar Plum Spice is my current favorite. If you call and order more, you will get even better pricing. www.thecandlesource.com. Best Wishes!
  13. I use palm wax from At Wix End and LOVE it!! 6% FO load, and kicks butt with just about every FO I use. I have also used Eco-PB and Cargill PV-1, but they don't come out of the burner as easily as the palm wax does. The only downfall with palm wax is you can't get those deep colors some people really like, or it takes a TON of dye, at least in my experience.
  14. They are lovely! I just started back after a year long break as well. I couldn't keep up being pregnant and working full time. Now that our daughter is 6 months old I have some extra time to work on candles. It's my therapy! Good Luck with everything. Your products are amazing.
  15. Here is a link to the aroma creations website that explains the whole dilution topic, and may answer some of our questions. http://www.aromacreations.com/faq.html#Q1 The questions about crafter grade oils was really informative.
  16. I know this is an old post, but I just wanted to say that in regards to suppliers "watering down" their oils: I know a woman that works for a reputable FO supplier, she admits that they DO dilute their oils. I think its silly how everyone attacked Beverly the way they did. This thread is supposed to help others.....I found her information very helpful and informative and in my opinion very true. It's frustrating when we spend so much money on crappy oils that don't perform well. We are all on this site looking to perfect our product and we should help each other. I did not know that this site was organized by a supplier, which is fine but shouldn't keep people from giving their honest opinion.
  17. Great! Thanks for the info! Had a long weekend. Now back to work! Nichole
  18. I am looking for a place that sells candle labels, or even label temp-lets. I am going for a cute polka dot label...that would look good in a a boutique type store. I was also wondering if anyone has pics of their labels and could lead me in the right direction to design them myself. There is sooo much info out there it is a bit overwhelming. I got a quote from lightening labels. They charge 60.00 an hour for the design and there are order minimums. Thanks so much!
  19. I was using htp 105 and cotton wicks in the c-3. So maybe that was my problem with the scent throw. I have only been using c-3 a few months. So maybe I'll try it with the different wicks and the coconut oil and compare it with the 444 and 464. I notice most people use the CD's or CDN's. I always thought CD and cotton were the same thing. I gotta get cookin. My big craft show is in 4 weeks! Thanks again for your help!
  20. I used "Candle Colors" from The CandleMakers Store. We never had any problems with this dye and it worked really well.
  21. Stella, Thank You very much! I searched the forums before posting my thread but couldn't find any specifics about it....probally operator error on my part. I saw the stuff that JBN sells but wasn't sure if I had to get that particular kind or could just use any old coconut oil. I think the oil I have will do. I am going to start working with GB 444 and then 464. I am currently working with ecosoya 135, and c-3...doesn't have that great of a throw at least from what ive tested, so I think I'll move on to Golden Brands again. I used to use 415 but was never completely satisfied, so i've been testing other waxes like a crazy mad scientist! I'm also testing different tart waxes...don't think I'll need it for that wax though. Thanks again!
  22. The wax I was using was Golden Brands 415...no addittives and a medium cotton wick. It was candy cane from At Wix End. I used 1 oz of FO per pound of wax. Right now I am working with c-3, ecosoya 135 and getting ready to try GB 444. Thanks a bunch! It's good to know I'm not alone! Also curious if you all test your own products or if you have other people test for you.
  23. I notice that many people use coconut oil to help their candles perform better in soy. I am curious as to what kind you use. Can you get it anywhere, or is there a certain brand/type I should use? I have some in my food pantry but wasn't sure if I can use this or not.
  24. I keep having trouble with my candy cane fragrance oil. When I test it, it smells like fuel. Is this the wick or the FO? I've had this trouble with the bubblegum scent from NG as well and never figured it out. Thanks so much!
